Weber State @ Portland State

3 failures (missed 30 yard FG, fumble on 2 yard line, winning touchdown going right between TF's arms) = ballgame.

How do you look Hubel, the O-line, or the wideouts in the eyes if you're one of the guys responsible for one of these miscues? The team and coaching staff finally put together a complete game, and a few guys manage to screw it up. Tough night for those dudes.

WTF is going on with the alumni and monied supporters? Great on-campus marketing brought out one of the better non-griz student crowds in recent years, yet the total attendance was under 7,000. The athletic department is finally doing its job and the product is now the problem? A contradiction from the last two years.

To say the least I'm disappointed in the turnout of the game. Missed tackles continue to plague this team. While there were good moments by the players, they also made mistakes that overshadowed good play. Simply stated, we played well between the 25's. But for some reason we still can't make things happen inside the opponents 25 yard line. We had at least 4 passes resulting in runs of 40-65 yards with the ball ending up either on the 25 or inside the 20, and I think all we got out of that was 10 points. If we did a better job inside the 25-20 yard line, we win this game hands down. Yes, this offense is quick strike and can move the ball quickly. But when it stalls it puts so much pressure on the defense.

I understand the freshman movement.....but frankly today it bit us in the butt. Snow had 10 tackles (a good job), but allowed a touchdown, missed four critical tackles, and then in the last 25 seconds let the tight end catch a 20 yard pass that kept their last drive alive. Although Ford's brain fart ended with a touchdown, that wasn't the defining moment of the drive. There were 3 plays before that which got the ball down the field. Why oh why can someone tell me that running a "prevent defense" is in the best interest of a final seconds game plan? Two 8-10 passes, a 20 yard pass completion and the end result puts us at our 35-40 yard line for the last second snafu? Williams (#25) gets beat throughout the game and finally is pulled...but the damage was long done at that point.

Penalties, offensive and defensive hurt us.....it will be interesting to see if the coaches pull any other players as a "consequence" for the penalties that cost us either valuable yards or position on the field.

I am forever a PSU football supporter, but I'm mystified by some of the doings.

I find the issue easy to explain. Our backs aren't particularly quick or strong... their success today came early when Weber was playing pass defense. Then, we have quick receivers, but they're all small. The offensive line, because of this, plays to pass block. Therefore, when the defense tightens in the red zone, PSU can't knock people around, Hubel can't find receivers amongst the defenders, so things are that much harder. That being said, the "fumble" at the goal line (oh, to have replay in FCS) probably decided this game.

It'll be interesting to watch this team mature, but I wonder if the team literally growing wouldn't hurt.

I agree, Pounder. Small backs, small receivers. We still have a ways to go in recruiting. As for the game itself, I won't second-guess the coaches - though I admit the prevent defense at the end didn't prevent much. Chalk it up to their excellent quarterback? This is why I watch college football rather than the NFL - the unexpected is right around the corner. From a spectator point of view, that was an incredible game - a lot of freshmen and sophomores against an experienced team. Flashes of briilliance followed by incredibly dumb mistakes. As you say, it will be interesting to see how this team develops.

Good point. The student section seemed packed and was generating some noise yesterday. Would be nice to see the reserved seats filled up.

Was that a legit fumble? Tough view from our section, so I just saw a pile of guys, and the official signal the turnover.

I thought the ground caused the fumble... thing being that I couldn't tell if a knee or an elbow was down by then.

It was definitely a fumble. Bowen knew it and showed it when he was coming off the field, i.e. hitting himself in the head, before making it back over to the PSU side of the field. Mistakes happen, but that close to the goal line you cover the ball and then take the hit....this is a sign of the inexperience that you had on the field in critical moments of the game. Maybe you can get away with that in high school, but not at the college level...result..a loss. Which takes away from the fact he had 100 yards of rushing.

The freshmen have 3 years to pull it together. If you have good seniors in the starting offense and defensive side of the ball, then use them. They aren't experienced for nothing.

I get tired of the players taking the blame. Players are coached to execute. This team doesn't execute well and that's on the coaches. The perfect example was the last play of the game. WTF was Ford doing trying to intercept? Knock the friggin' ball down. There should have been clear instructions from the sidelines. Obviously it wasn't communicated. There is so much stupidity being committed by this team that I just have to look at the coaching.

Appeared to be a football move, reach for the goaline..when the ball crosses the plane, magic. It looked good to me the announcers believed it was good along with all but one official away from the ball. We'll definitely know if Glanville talks about it this week after reviewing film. Too bad FCS don't have replay.

Does anyone know what that big personal foul penalty was for on the big hit on the Weber player coming across the middle (I think on Pederson)? Was it a hard hit after the ball was past the receiver, or taunting after the play. I sure can't hear a thing from the public address guy.

It felt like deja vu, PSU gets into a position to make a crucial defensive stand with momentum on the line, makes a huge stop, a second later gets some questionable personal foul flag thrown, and the opponent immediately scores a touchdown... or two.

I was proud of the guys that they didn't fold after going down 28-10. Got a couple of breaks and were right back in it.

The signal indicated that there was "helmet to helmet" contact. I remember hearing Hewitt and Lund say that Pedersen hit the receiver high (looked to me like it was in the shoulder area). I guess the sideline referree thought he went in to high.

Don't think we will be able to fill up the reserved sections with the quality of the product we are putting on the field. People will go watch Oregon or Oregon State before sitting through a frustrating PSU performance. We went head to head with Oregon and Oregon State playing at the same time as PSU and we got crushed in terms of attendance.
