Weber to play byu 2012

"Weber State, USU, Idaho and Hawaii are 2012 home games so far. So far home games looking very poor to me."

Cougar fans pissed with this home schedule.

i hope this isnt accurate. i dont want to play those west coast conferencers. what is in it for us? lets get a real money game. not some cheap instate discount from instate schools that cant/wont pay up.

lose-lose
we lose the game and we dont get a big payoff. just gets us that much closer to not getting in the playoffs.

BYU will be paying us more than our FBS opponents have over the past few years.

I for one like the instate games, it was fun going down to Utah back in 08. Let's just hope Heaps is sick that week... with mono!

i hope so but i have seen no data. paying more than usu, csu and wyo doesnt mean much. i never heard what bc and tt paid.

it needs to be a good money game. no reason to go out of our way for byu like usu always does. we aren't fbs and we need to do anything we can to help our team get to the playoffs.

does anyone know our payouts over the past 3-4 years? i heard idaho state got over 800k for playing okla and asu in 2009. i also heard usu's 2 for 1 with byu means the 2nd game they have to play in provo they will receive somewhere in the range of 500k-1mil. should i assume byu will be paying us asu/okla type of money? now that they are an independant supposed big time player will they be shelling out bcs type money for home games? i am very skeptical.

BYU is paying more than BC and Texas Tech did, and we have almost no travel expenses. We've had discussions with ASU about games, and their number is nowhere near $900k. Not sure about Oklahoma, but another big state school from their conference pays less than BYU as well. Also, FWIW, some of the big payouts come out of desperation to find a game (e.g. PSU at Michigan State a few years ago) late in the scheduling process.

the schedule model that would be most benficial would be the below. i have heard it is easier said than done to schedule a big time money game (though idaho state sure has no problems doing it).

1. OOC: one non big sky game against a bcs conference school that is out of state.
2. remaining 2 OOC games: play 2 big sky teams that are not on our schedule for the year since the new big sky will have 13 schools. the big sky already said this is allowed.

a money game and 10 big sky games would be most optimal. big sky games are really the only games i look forward to especially since each one is so meaningful. money games hurt our record and non DI's aren't worth coming to see and hurt our record too since they don't count in the playoff committee's eyes.

now that ooc fcs games are giong to be very hard to schedule we should just play conference teams.

my view of this was a little different with suu, cp and davis not in the big sky. they are now in our conf.

3. no non DI's ever unless the program is rock bottom like isu and unc.

4. on the 12 game season every 4th year add an extra money game.

i hate to always sound so negative about the fbs games but because of mac i no longer have a child's palate like aj and talhad!! i have aquired a taste for the playoffs and i want to get to the playoffs much more than wondering if we can compete with the instate fbs teams in a meaningless game.

i understand the program needs all the money it can get but i also know mac would have an easier time coaching without one hand tied behind his back.

the program has made great strides since 2004, we are getting there but not quite.

sac has a great schedule this year and it is exactly what i described in my schedule model, 1 money and 10 big sky:

sac
oregon st
suu
weber
montana
montana st
unc
ewu
nau
psu
isu
uc davis

The guys look forward to the FBS games more than any other game. When I played I would have rather won the Hawaii or Colorado State game rather than our Cal Poly playoff win. National championship > FBS win > Playoff win > Montana schools win > conference win. Let the kids look forward to playing some of the big boys and they'll work harder in the offseason.

I for one love this game. This is a road game that I can easily travel to. And it's against an instate team.
As a fan the payout is a secondary issue to me. And anyway, the travel is cheap for this game, which will make the net $ gain much better.

There are internet sites that show Weber playing at ASU in 2014. Are these accurate?

Catcat does make a couple good points. I agree that scheduling FBS can affect our playoff chances. I fear the possibility of the team sustaining major injuries. But I've had enough conversations with individuals in the athletic department who have convinced me of how necessary these games are financially; especially if the travel is close. Weber keeps more $$$ since they won't accrue substantial financial costs traveling. Also, playing instate gives the fans a chance to see their team by having a close road game and keeps the money in the state. If Utah, BYU, and USU are going to play FCS then they should first see if Weber or SUU have room on their schedules. Next, for me these type of games are a great indication of how good our team is and how much our program has progressed. Finally, if Weber is ever to beat an FBS I'd love to see wins over our instate rivals.

you were on the 2008 team and cared more about a meaningless ooc game?

i understand about being about to go to an ooc road game but that is beside my point. sure ill go if i can too. and when you say the payout is secondary well it is the only reason this game is on the schedule. we don't have a rivalry with any fbs teams and they wont be looking forward to this game.

i went to both fbs games in 2009 and i had a great time and really looked forward to those games. when all was said and done we were 0-2 and when the the playoff announcements were happing we werent sure if we were gonna get an invite despite a 6-2 record in one of the fcs' top conferences. we did get in. i believe we were the 3rd team in 30 yrs to get in with 4 losses.

the article talking about the money we will save by playing locally helps me to understand better especially if the instate teams have a lower payout, then minimal travel costs surely will help.

i looked up idaho state football schedules for the past 3 years:

2011: washington state, pac 10
2010: georgia, sec;
2009: arizona state, pac 10; oklahoma, big 12

a 500k payout helps for expensive travel costs.

i guess i should stop posting/whining on this thread when my point is moot when clearly everyone else would rather participate in a "measuring stick" contest then get to the playoffs.

"As we build our program, we're going to play a few of those games, and not just for the guarantee," Bovee said. "We've got to see how we measure up, where do we really fit in. That's a good barometer to see where you're at."

i agree it is a good barometer only if our goal is to move up to the wac in the next few yrs.
