Weber vs Bristol

Last game before conference play is Saturday! Seems like the sooner they get back on the court the better after the debacle in Norman! OK to put down the purple juice and just hope for a win!

I'm glad we're playing Bristol after Oklahoma and before EWU, but playing a 3-10 team with their tallest player being 6'6" is a game that we need to not only win, but win by a large enough margin to get some confidence going into conference play!

This could kick start a successful conference season! It also could be a dangerous game in light of what happened in Oklahoma and the kids only having one day back from their Christmas break. I'm going to drink lots of the purple juice and look for a 30 point win and that Rahe is able to get every single eligible player in the game!

I know this might sound a bit crazy to some, but I think we are better off at this point than we were last year.

The players have gone home to be with their families for Christmas. They will be coming back on Friday. They will get a walk through on Saturday morning and then play in the evening. That's not a lot of preparation. We shouldn't need much prep for this team, but you never know what might happen. They should be a little POed by what happened in Norman, and play with a little fire in their eyes. We will see.

What I haven't seen in these guys yet is the stubborn determination that we have become used to at WSU. There just doesn't seem to be any urgency. I hope it shows up soon. :coffee:

This is a good point.

I thought they got a little wide-eyed with the Y in the first half of the game here. And obviously they were awed by the big, bad Sooners. Not sure when, or where, we're going to find the confidence we need -- and that we're used to. But it's obvious we don't have it right now...

Since Sir Velo will be in attendance, I've decided to pull a No Show. I'm just hoping the Cats beat the Bristolers by 50.

Once again for the impaired:

Senglin -- Sophomore
Gittens -- Sophomore
Hill -- Sophomore
Golden -- JC Transfer Junior
Bolomboy -- Junior
Hajek -- Senior but has played sparingly the past two seasons
Coston -- JC Transfer Junior
Hunter -- Freshman
Richardson -- Freshman

Lost from last season:
Tresnak -- Best Center in the Sky for the past two seasons
Berry -- Two time 1st Teamer and last seasons MVP
Richardson -- two year starter, four year letter winner, and perhaps the best on ball defender in the Sky the past two seasons.
Fulton -- Solid shooting big, former Freshman of the year.
Royce Williams -- Two year role player. Knew the offense and was a good leader on and off the court
Fuller -- played sparingly but had upside and was only a freshman who knew the offense and was an excellent rebounder. Could have played the 3 or 4. Great ball handler and excellent shooter. More time could have = more production.
Wheelwright -- HUGE LOSS. It is really showing now.

Rahe is waaaaaay to quick to counsel players out.

This game aught to be a feel good game. Everyone should get a chance to pad their stats a little.

Tal is right. This team is young and still developing. I'm ready to cut them a pass and just enjoy the process this year. Next year should be a new situation. My expectations will be higher next year than they were at the beginning of this year. Next year I won't be buying the young and inexperienced argument. :coffee:

The year after Dame left we did not miss a beat. We re-loaded, retooled and were right back in the mix. I think that gave us a false sense of hope when we lost so much last year. We were also told how awesome the JC kids were. I agree that we might be counseling kids out to quick. I don't think that Coston or Golden are upgrades over Royce Williams. With more commits than schollies, my guess is that we will be following the trend again this year.

So with Bristol, lets give Richardson some good time. Lets play Van Pelt. I want to see what we have towards the end of the bench. I think one of our problems is we don't have a lot of internal competition for roster spots. Last year, some of these guys had to go out and prove themselves to get on the court. It just doesn't seem like our starters are being pushed by their back ups this year. We just need to win by 34 or more so sacstateman won't play the comparative score game when trying to rationalize why his team sucks less than Weber.

Exactly WHEN did I do that????

I don't think the margin of victory matters at all. I just want to see a little more defense and intensity. I know that everyone has been disappointed in our offense, but I feel that offense flows out of defense and that our D hasn't been producing like it should. I would like to see us attack the offensive glass a little more as well.

I totally agree about getting Richardson on the floor for more minutes and seeing what Van Pelt can do.

Bristol's best rebounder gets less than 5 per game. Our bigs should be able to get about what they want. If Hajek gets less than 6 rebounds, his team mates should get him a dime to practice jumping over. :yikes:

Amazing how you guys turn on a player! Just last week we all thought Hajek was our savior! Hajek is a pedestrian Center. We all bought into the hype that was written early in the season about Hajek's rebirth.. Old's strikes again! He's still a 5th year Senior with little court time! Your hallucinating if you think VanPelt is the solution. I still think We'll win our conference, but we are not a very good team. Losing last year Seniors hurt, losing Beckner hurt even more. We need some help! Our starters just aren't getting it done! Someone needs to light a fire under these guys and turn them into basketball players. Can't ignore Oklahoma..... Lots of lessons to be learned! The only player who athletically could compete was Bolomboy! Everyone else couldn't physically compete against Oklahoma's athletic basketball players.

I don't think that we will win the conference at this point. I would like to quote our good friend MT JACK, "I'm thinking the Big Sky is looking like EWU and the 11 stinky dwarves right now."

I don't think I can argue with that.

I agree, and although I will always hope that the wildcats will win the conference, the best thing for the conference would be EWU winning. Their team has the make up to pull an upset. I'm not sure anyone else in the conference could (maybe NAU if they play like they did at St. Mary's, but their team is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde).

Just to be clear, you are saying losing Beckner hurt more than losing Berry, Tresnak, Richardson & Fulton? Just because somebody sends out twitter quotes of John Wooden, doesn't make them John Wooden.

I think coach did a lot more then send quotes. Players need someone to get the best out of them..... Beckner did just that! Team is really missing their edge. Coach brought that edge! No doubt we have talent, they just aren't playing up to the level they're capable. I disagree that we're getting better...... Seems like we're headed in the wrong direction. The team really seems flat. I'm ready for conference season..... Just not sure what to expect!

Don't get me wrong. When I say that I want to see what Richardson and Van Pelt can do, it does not mean I think they should be starting or that I think they are the answer. I think that the five starting now are the ones that should be starting. In a game like this one, coach can be a little more liberal with the minutes and maybe we can get a better understanding of what they have to offer.

I would be the last to say that the absence of Beckner has anything to do with our current lack of enthusiasm.

This year, more than any other year that this staff has been here, the coaches are spending a lot more time on basic fundamentals and less time putting the fine tuning into the O and D. It shows in how slow this team has been progressing. Despite Monday's game, this team has been making some progress. A game like that can be better than an azz chewing by any coach. It can be an eye opener to most players. It can show them where they need to be. Some of them just might put the work in to get there. :twocents:

• Bristol University is located in Anaheim, Calif. The Bears are 3-10 on the season and are in their first year competing in college basketball. They are members of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

Looks like we have a live one in here on Saturday night!!!
You have to give it to our athletic dept..... They seem to find first year programs willing to be competitive at the Dee!

I know that we are all frustrated with the losses this year so far. Would it be better to camp out at the Dee all preseason playing teams like Bristol? Utah has done this the last few seasons, and the Aggies don't ever leave Logan pre-season. I'm particularly bothered by the loss at Oklahoma State, but we seem to go on the road and get thrashed by teams each pre-season in hopes of an upset and/or to make our RPI better. Especially in what seems to be a rebuilding year, we should have scheduled more winnable games.

I want a tough schedule and to win games. I think it is total BS to not expect both. We have done it in the past and, in my mind, there is no reason to not do it now.

So far, this years team has not lived up to anyone's expectations. Most importantly, their own.

However, all is not lost. Everyone gets a restart with the beginning of BSC play. Our guys can still be good. They just need to light a fire in their bellies.

It can start tonight......, or not. :coffee:

Great post Olds!
I agree! Set the standard high and exceed it! It's time to step up or sit down!

What exactly is giving everyone this renewed hope that things are suddenly going to improve when we start conference play?

I have seen absolutely nothing in the last two weeks that would lead me to believe we will suddenly be a new and improved team. At best we will start off slow and perhaps see gradual improvement before the tournament .... HOPEFULLY? First 10 minutes against Bristol were lame. Yeah we picked it up and at halftime are getting the job done but we should have jumped on these guys from the beginning!!!

I still want to see the coaches spend more time developing the young guys, and all of them. Let's see what they can do.
