Hornetsports Recap:

My thoughts by position:
Offensive Coaching: (B) The offense had success attacking the edges and yet a lot of run plays inside the tackles were called. The vertical passing game saw more action than in the recent past. The coaches didn’t open the playbook a whole lot but didn’t need to. 3rd down efficiency was really bad, that needs to improve as well as the goal line play calling and execution. We’ll see how things go against a stronger defense.
Quarterback: (A-) Safron made one bad decision that resulted in an INT, but otherwise had a good game. He didn’t put up a ton of yards (251 passing, 10 rushing) but did what was needed and hung up 5 TDs. It is encouraging to see the completions down the field. Kniffin got some mop up duty, good to see him get a little experience under his belt.
Running Backs: (B) Robinson (12 carries for 69 yds) looked most effective when attacking the edges. The running game is still very ineffective between the tackles. The RBs caught a few passes coming out of the backfield, the first of which resulted in a TD.
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: (A-) Agude ( 6 recs for 111 yds, 2 TDs) looks like he has the potential to complement Carter as he had a huge game. Carter continued his ATM role (3 recs for 56 yds, 2 TDs) and had a carry on a jet sweep. Broadnax (3 recs for 46 yds) picked up some solid yards after contact and looks like he will be a load for opposing defenses. Coulter (2 recs for 27 yds) had a few early catches but disappeared after that. The WRs went up and made some plays and that is what is needed. As expected the ball was spread around and there were some positive signs with this group.
Offensive Line: (B) After some early game jitters the offensive line settled down and controlled the line of scrimmage. Running inside the tackles still was an issue but they did a better job blocking on stretch plays. There were 3 sacks allowed and the goal line issues still persist. This unit can play better.
Defensive Coaching: (B) The Hornets struggled to defend the pass early and were heavily aided by an early injury to UIW’s starting QB. UIW had no chance at a win once he went down. The blitzes seemed to hit home, but there is still concern when the defense drops back into coverage. Plenty to work still remains for the defense.
Defensive Line: (A) The defensive line stuffed the inside runs and got consistent pressure against UIW’s QB. Overall a solid effort. Totty had 1.5 sacks and 1.5 TFLs. UIW only managed 98 yards on the ground.
Linebackers: (A-) Sankey lived up to the hype and led the defense in tackles with 10. He also had a pick 6, a forced fumble, a half sack and half a TFL. Sankey is going to be a total wrecking ball this season. Overall the LBs had good run pursuit and were able to get pressure on the blitz. Need to see more plays made by the other LBs.
Secondary: (B) It was evident that this unit was going to struggle, but were bailed out by an injury to UIW’s starting QB. They were completely burned early by a RB pass (was incomplete) and it looked like the status quo early on. To their credit they did settle down and held UIW to under 200 yards passing. I’m still concerned about the coverage but I think this unit can improve given their youth. Banks led the defense with 2 TFLs and was 2nd in tackles with 6. He will be a starter sooner rather than later.
Special Teams: (A) A blocked punt, a recovered kickoff, an impressive return by Warren (33 yds, averaged 25 yds a return), all PATs were made, booming kickoffs for TBs, punting and punt coverage was solid. Solid game all around, only thing keeping ST from an A+ was the ridiculous decision to kick a 57 yard FG late in the 1st half. That FG was blocked and gave UIW great field position; fortunately the Hornet defense forced a fumble. Also poor coaching decision to go for a 4th and goal late in the game, Sears needs to get the FG unit out there in garbage time.
Overall: (A-) Hornets got off to the start they needed against an inferior opponent, and should have some confidence as they head to Cal next week. The team was prepared to take care of business and Hornet fans should be optimistic about the season. This was a great start to the Sears era.
