WEEK 1 Opponent: WESTERN OREGON

I'm not going to get my hopes up. We all should prepare for a weak week 1. To get an FCS opponent we will either be traveling or paying out the nose. I definitely prefer a DI FCS team, but if that doesn't happen, we will at least get 6 home games this year.

You make a good point. At least hope that AD Crompton pressures JMU to pay the contract $$ full penalty for cancelling the game with Weber St. to play a FBS team instead. Understand their reasoning to do so but they need to make good on the contract (they can afford it no doubt). Paycheck money for the Wildcats this fall will be what, just USU? They don't pay that much but at least the expenses are low to get to Logan. Wish the fat cat Utes would play Weber State every year. :twocents:

Does anyone have knowledge of where we are at in the process of finding a week 1 game?

Seems like it has been long enough that we should have something in the works by now. :wtf:

Most likely a non D1. Teams from the east won't travel out west, all FCS teams in the west already have full schedules, except San Diego. But SD won't play Weber, even home and home. Means 6 home dates but playoff resume takes a hit.

Believe me, Weber tried. SD scheduled La Verne & Shirley instead. They aren't going to travel this far to get their asses kicked. They traveled to MSU last season and lost by 42. But at least MSU paid them like a money game, something Weber can't afford to do.

This is why Weber has to get max $$$ from JMU for breaking the contract. Only way the Cats can get a decent Week 1 opponent is by paying top dollar. Weber will need all 400K and then some to get an FCS team to come. Is there a chance that Weber could travel and get paid? Yes. BUT, it will have to be worth it to the Cats. Traveling is not cheap. We have to get money or at least a home game in the future.

I agree with Sweber, we will probably see Montana Tech, Fort Lewis or a team like them take that open date.

Per Brett Hein, got $75,000 of the contracted $400,000 buyout from JMU. All $75,000 is being paid to Western Oregon for this game.

I don't have a problem with scheduling WO or with accepting less from JMU, as long as we get a future money game that is even better out of JMU. I feel that this might be the reason we decided to let them off the hook and not take them to court for the full amount. I'm sure that there was some negotiation that went on here.

We were too late in the game to get a good HnH contract with a FCS program or a good enough money game with a FBS program. Unlike basketball, football games are contracted years in advance. Negotiating what we did with JMU was more about the future than anything else. I'm sure of that.

I feel that we just need to make the most of this game with Western Oregon.

Of course I would have preferred an FCS team, but I’m sure it wasn’t able to be worked out. The bright side is six home games and an opener to work in a new offense where most if not all players will get playing time.

I don’t see it hurting the playoff resume as much as some do. In fact, I think some teams playing two FBS teams usually get punished as they don’t get as much of a look.

Honestly, this year is a very tough schedule, and there is a lot of improvement needed in a lot of key areas…mainly QB play, O line play, D line play, and FG kicking. I think this is the first year in a while where Weber State will be picked 4th or lower in preseason polls. As slight as the difference is in teams, this shouldn’t be alarming but suggests there is work to do. An easy D-II opener should help for this year, but of course avoided in future schedules.

Color me underwhelmed by Western Oregon. Oh, well. I'll still be there. The rest of the schedule is solid.

southern utah leaving we miss out on that easy win having won five straight football games in the series with 62-0 drubbing last year. theanalyst has ranked FCS sos with weber state 5th SOS out of 130 teams
