Week 1: St. Francis IL (NAIA) @ Sac State

Week 1 St. Francis is nothing special, this should be over before halftime.

While you are probably correct, this is reminiscent of the San Jose St. forum discussing UCD before last night. Good luck to you guys this season.

Hey you didn't do any drive by trolling late last Nov, what happened? 8-)

They must have been too lazy to do any research then. I had the dungpilers picked to win that game; in fact I don't even consider it an "upset".

Okay, first surprise...

Why is Sears suspended for tonight’s game?!?!

Apparently for playing an ineligible player for one play in the 2016 season... wtf?! Wulff takes over...

Yeah, it was only an NAIA school. Yeah, the Hornets were supposed to dominate and win. But I still enjoyed watching it. And I'm still gonna say it was a good win.

Now go to SD and get one next week!

The suspension was directly related to the probation issue created by Sperbeck. The self-reported 2016 infraction would have created a warning if the program had not already been on probation.

This game was over on the first drive.

Hard to tell because of the level of competition, but this team looks athletic and deeeep.

Sears has built a hell of a roster.

Sears playing an ineligible player for a play (in other words cheating) in '16 is Sperbeck's fault. Sounds legit.

Very enjoyable to watch.
Next week will be brutal though.

Yo, genius...thank you for reminding everyone that you really have no idea what you are talking about most of the time...let me spell it out for you. Your boy Sperbeck got the program on probation for a long-term pattern of cheating...not an anomalistic, self-reported event that was considered a mistake. The NCAA would not have taken any action at all against Spears if the program had not been on probation. Hard to believe you would accuse Spears of cheating on this board. Why don't you walk into his office and call him a cheater to his face?

Any thoughts on yesterdays game in terms of concerns for the Hornets and what anyone saw that Sac State needs to improve on?

And any updates on injuries?

Replay is available on WatchBigSky, here’s the link to the Hornetsports recap on the 55-7 win.

According to the participation report, here are some notable names that didn’t see action: Ale, Perkinson, Gable, Grover, Choates, Erikson, Rosko, Bruce.

Perkinson out with a hamstring injury, Bruce out with a broken wrist. Obinna played maybe a series or two, was carted from the sideline to the locker room after the 1st quarter. Huge loss if it is something major. Thompson got dinged and came out after a carry in the 3rd.

Offense picked up where it left off last season. The starters looked good and most only played the 1st half. Thomson looked solid, great touch on the long balls. Ratliff and Lindsey had big games, nothing new there. Pierre Williams and Jarrell Anderson look like they will be key part of this offense as defenses try to lock in on Ratliff and Lindsey. Dotson got the bulk of the work in the 1st half and looked good. Offense struggled to get big runs when attacking the edge, but I don’t recall any read option plays being run with Thomson.

Defense was fine. Didn’t force any turnovers and only a couple of sacks but kept them off the board until the bench was in. St Francis did a good job of mixing things up and had success moving the ball early in the game but the Hornets tightened up when needed. Lots of short quick passes by St Francis for short gains.

Hoolihan is the holder instead of Merker. Hoolihan’s lone punt was awful (took a bad bounce). Medeiros was perfect on the night.

I think Ale is a good player, but I really like Jack rice’s chances to succeed Thomson next year. I really like what I saw from him.

Hard to judge performances against St. Francis but I really liked what I saw on Saturday night.
The team looked focused and there were very few mistakes, penalties etc., especially for an opening game.
The starters looked good in the first half and I was really impressed by all the freshman's performances in the second half. Obviously the recruiting has been even better than we expected, this team has a lot of depth! Clapper looked solid, and Rice looked like another Thomson. I would have liked to see more of Rice. It was mentioned that Thomson has a good chance of getting a year of eligibility back.
I am concerned with the injuries, Obinna, etc., hope nothing too serious and they can return soon.
Great to have football back, looks like a fun ride this season!

Like I mentioned in the TV thread, I was impressed with this outing. What some of you are forgetting is that this was a potential trap game. St. Francis is the defending NAIA National Champions, so the potential to pull a shocker was there. That it did not is a testimonial that our guys weren't about to let that happen and that our coaches had them scouted fairly well, even for a first game of the season. Three Hornet QBs (at least) led TD drives, something that isn't always seen even when a Nebraska demolishes a Sun Belch squad....
