Week 1, @ Utah

Agreed, 02. It's truly unfortunate money or lack there of creates this situation. I am no fan of these games whether it be Weber out-manned in FB or Weber's opponent out-manned in BB. It's the exception when these types of game truly helps either team.

Can't really fault the defense, they were on the field the entire game and no one short of a Weber fan (least of all arrogant, idiot pUke fans) can credit them for the good showing they made. The D played well the better part of the first half and then tired quickly throughout the 2nd half. The secondary did get a little lucky on a few long throws as they didn't play the ball well but they still got the incompletions. There were only a few bad defensive plays, including the 80-some-odd yard run by Moss. For the most part, I thought they did a decent job on Moss but the media and pUke fans see it differently through their crimson shades.

The offense on the other hand is very worrisome. Utah's defense is sound-- experienced, big, quick, athletic, and deep-- they are legit. However, Weber wasn't able to challenge them in any way. It was more than just being out-manned, Weber was anemic and if they have talent then I don't understand why the play call seemed so vanilla and limited. It's bad when you go from hoping to be competitive to hoping for a 2nd 1st down before the game ends! I still believe Cantwell and Vollert are too big of loses to not have a huge impact on the O, not to mention the revolving door installed in the coaches offices. I hope there are signs of life with the O at CP but I am very nervous about what was seen at Rice-Eccles and how this team is going to put up the points needed to win this year.

Defense played great. Like Coach said some of the Utah scores happened because players were trying too hard. Those things tend to happen. Can't blame guys for playing hard. Just that they need to stay in his system and maintain the game plan. I'm excited to see how good our defense can be. They played a hell of a game. Utah's offense is experienced, deep, and full of play makers and a veteran offensive line (I hope they are as good as I think they are. Personally, I think they are better than the last time Weber visited Salt Lake). As for our offense...well, I'm worried about a couple of things: QB, TEs, and WRs. However, if there is one thing that has been consistent at Utah -under Kyle Whittingham- it is the Ute Defense being stout. That defense is good; to be exact, it is borderline great. Once again, that defense is a lot better from the one we faced in 2013. So, there are some things to be happy about. One, Weber's defense held its own against a good offense full of athletes. Two, Weber's offense, yes was anemic, might not be as bad. We started a lot of young guys at the skill positions last night. So, to me, it can only get better from here.

Now, Jenks...is he ready? Serious question...to me, I think he might need another year before he could be ready but if he is the best we've got, then we've got to go with the best. Constantine had a major knee surgery in December/January and just isn't ready for major hits. Ricedorff missed most of fall camp with a hamstring injury. So, that leave Jenks. I'm hoping this isn't another Barnes moment though. After a dud against Boise State, the Cats then went to Cal Poly and laid another egg. So, hopeful that we exercise the demons and play a lot better next week.

Personally, I'm going to wait and see with Jenks. I don't think we should read much of anything into this game as far as the QB play goes. That was a very difficult situation to be in for any FCS QB, much less one playing in his first college game. Like I've said, his line and receivers didn't do much to help him. He was pressured and hit all night. And the play calling was very conservative and vanilla. I give him big credit for not turning the ball over all game.

So my .02 after a long weekend.

Defense - B
Our defense looked great for a quarter, good for most of the second and then got tired and gave up a few big plays. Front 4 put some pressure on early, linebackers were solid. Pass coverage was hot and cold. We will need to pressure the QB and stuff the run to take the heat off the DBs. We missed a few tackles in the second half and have to be more sure of our angles to the ball. Proud of how they came out and took on the Utes.

Offense - D
Unfortunately, breaking in a new QB, a new TE, and running a new scheme against a very good Utah defense was too much to ask. I was really not happy with the offensive scheme. We needed to run more north/south than east/west. Utah had a speed advantage and we were running east/west out of the shotgun. Seemed doomed from the start. The few runs up the middle seemed successful. Jenks has some decent running ability as well. Passing was non-existent. Too many drops and not enough separation. If we were going to be so conservative in our play calling, we should have had a few more short passes to gain some confidence.

Special Teams - B
We looked good on punts, which unfortunately we saw too many of. Ok on place kicking except for the blocked field goal. Kickoffs under the new rule were pretty boring. Bright spots included blocking a Utah kick and recovering a muffed? punt.

Gotta hope we figure out the offense and get even better on defense before the next game. The injury to Garrett is concerning, but we did get to see some of our depth at running back. Did we lose anyone else? Toia went out in the second half but was still on the sidelines. I also seem to recall a DB or two going down for a few plays.

Spot on.
