Week 10: #2 Sac State at #5 Weber State

Great game considering opponent, weather and historical trouble winning in Utah. Good to see Marshell out again and Dunniway redeemed himself. Gotta get SkatPack around the ends more.

Refs almost cost us the game, again. Some of that laundry was questionable on the PI's. Aggressive jockeying for the ball, I say. Weber has always had an excellent KO/Punt returner. Feel bad, not really, regarding the LS to once again gift us the 3 pts and the game difference. Maybe should have kicked a FG in first quarter. Nice D stop twice for the 2pt. conversion attempt.

Elephant in the room, with each W is TT getting closer to being pulled away? It is paramount the school step up and build a real stadium and cement Hornet football before his success is forgotten by the new President. Hate to imagine TT would leave, but gotta be a realist. Coaching a CAL has got to be a dead end job, just another cog in the failures of that program. TT can make a legacy here and pretty much be the HC KIng of Sacramento valley football.

33-30 Hornet win! Hornets really controlled the whole game as both sides of the ball made plays when needed. Special teams was the difference in this one, with both teams having major hiccups, fortunately that blown punt snap by Weebs had the impact that it did. The decision to kick it deep when WSU was gashing the Hornets on kick returns was very questionable, and WSU's decision to try an on-side kick with 4 minutes left and 2 timeouts was a headscratcher as well as that led to a Sentkowski FG to make it a 10 point game again. Amazing the impact these decisions had in the 4th quarter.

Agree that the refs really kept this one going for Weebs, the PIs at the end of the game really got out of control.

Game management and decision making the last quarter was maddening to say the least.

That said, props to the team for winning a huge road game in difficult conditions against a quality opponent.

O’Hara’s TD dime to Marshel Martin was a thing of beauty.

Lastly, for the past several weeks the fanbase of our opponents all said essentially the same things. SAC is overrated and hasn’t faced a defense like ours.

Well, memo to Weber fans — like Griz and Idaho fans before you — the Hornets racked up 431 total yards and over 200 yards rushing against the vaunted Wildcat defense. And scored 31 points.

Scoreboard.

The only head scratcher by TT was the two timeouts blown on that 3rd and 4, and why RPO with O'Hara and Skat wasn't called that, at worst, sets up a 4th and short. The Hornets still ran a play out of that same set even after the timeouts that not only stopped the clock but was nearly picked off too. He definitely over thought that sequence there.

That toss from O'Hara to Martin was picture perfect. That 4th and1 lollipop to Kuntz was beautiful as well. If you watch the replay, O'Hara had to double clutch as Kuntz was stumbling. If he doesn't do that, the timing is off and it goes over his head for an incompletion.

The only people overlooking this program at this point are delusions fans that are still living in the 2010's (or earlier). Anyone that even remotely follows BSC football knows that this program is the real deal under TT. We've lost one (1) BSC game during his tenure and it was in 2019.

I gotta pose the question, how come there’s always talk of Troy Taylor being lured away but I never hear the same about the likes of Jay Hill?

Over the years the head coaches of NDST seemed to win a lot but not get swooped up by a larger program. Why is it seemingly only our HC that can’t be here for a while?

Out of all of them it seems to me TT has the most reason to stay put.

Doesn’t CAL have a first year HC in place already? One that nearly beat USC yesterday?

Why would Wilcox get fired after only 1 season? And if he did, would TT get fired after a 3 or 4 win season too?

I’d add to your list falling asleep on another fake punt — which should have been obvious given time remaining and their long snapping situation. Forget the return and keep them honest by giving them a normal defensive look they wouldn’t dare faking against.

Also add to the list continuing to kick the ball deep. That 2nd long kick return flipped the script and put them back in the game.

Special teams have been a disaster lately.

Agreed, special teams had its issues. They didn't fall asleep on the fake punt, they just couldn't come up with a tackle. The Hornet defender when high on a much bigger player and physics prevailed. The continued deep kicks to an absolute burner or a returner was not smart, and the Hornets paid for it. However, ST made up for it with the clutch FG by Sentkowski and taking care of business on the on-side kicks.

Here are my final thoughts on the win over Weber State:

It was a complete game on both sides of the ball and the Hornets were once again able to overcome some mis-steps, this time against a top 5 opponent on the road as the Hornets controlled the game for almost its entirety in blustery conditions. The resilience of the program that has been instilled by this coaching staff continues to shine through and this team has been battle tested as it hones in on a third straight BSC title and a playoff run.

Offensively the Hornet offensive line continues to dominate the line of scrimmage and allow this offense to churn out points. Weber State came into this game with a top rated defense and the Hornets got the job done. Asher O’Hara (10/13, 162 yds, 1 TD, 25 car, 81 yds, 2 TD) had a very efficient game both on the ground and through the air. The touchdown pass to Mashel Martin (4 rec, 72 yds, 2 TD) was a thing of beauty and Pierre Williams (4 rec, 74 yds) came through in some clutch moments. On the ground, Cameron Skattebo (15 car, 65 yds) eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark on the season and Marcus Fulcher (7 car, 39 yds) had some bit carries at the right time.

Defensively the Hornets continued with their “bend but don’t break” ways and kept a strong Weber State offense in check. The Hornets held the Wildcats below their season averages in output and scoring and had some key situational stops that preserved the win. WSU had a chance to cut the lead to one possession but the Hornet defense made not one, but two stops on 2-point conversion attempts. Prince Washington (9 tak) led the defense in tackles while Eian Moore, Cameron Broussard, and Armon Bailey each had 8 tackles. Tyler Hardeman (5 tak, 1.5 TFL, 1 sac) applied pressure from the interior through the game.

Special teams had their hiccups but came through when needed and also benefited from a busted snap by WSU. The Hornets allowed a fake punt conversion and a kick return for a touchdown, but came through on a clutch 43 yard field goal late from Kyle Sentkowski (1/1 FG, 4/4 PAT) and covered up an on-side kick attempt in the closing seconds.

Several players clearly did. A fake punt run shouldn’t work from 3 yards out if the entire defense is prepared and ready for it. But they were moving around helter skelter then got outflanked and lost contain. Gavin Davis-Smith nearly saved the day but lost the tackle. But he shouldn’t have been the only tackler in on the play.

Great call out re: Kyle Sentkowski. Those of us long suffering Hornets fans surely know how erratic and terrible our place kicking had been over the years. The past couple kickers, though, have been quite good and Mr, Sentkowski deserves a lot of credit and praise for being super reliable during his Sac State career.

That 43-yarder was clutch and saved the game.

Jay Hill has flat out said that he is not interested to FBS suitors and that Ogden is his home. Mark Few of Gonzaga basketball has and should be a contender for more lucrative programs, but he has said that his home is Spokane.

Until TT says publicaly that Sac is his home and he wants to stay long-term, I think the rumors will persist.
Absolutely, more than likely if he goes to Cal he will be fired after 3-4 seasons. Law of averages.
Beau Baldwin (OC) couldn't get out of Cal fast enough.

That one was difficult to judge. From one angle it looked as you describe. From another it looked like his head was more to the receivers right side.
