We lost votes in the media poll this week after a dominating road win at a team that hadn't lost at home and was riding a three game winning streak. This team has to win out (convincingly) to get an at large... Sac Vs. Errrrybody at this point...

Portland State weirdly puts things together against us it seems like. But lets hope we can dominate in the PNW again. We are -17.5 favorites. Initial forecast, 55 degrees and sunny at kickoff.

  • Rashada doesn't travel with team due to a "hand injury" and Jamar Malone throws first career TD pass.
  • Xavier Williams notches his first Sack and FF in five weeks.
  • ST blocks a punt or kick.
  • Team rushing yards OVER 350

Can't imagine this will go well for us, haha.

Bigger picture, would be nice if MLS changes their schedule and PSU can go back to the downtown field (which is owned by the city, not the Timbers). Although even when we had a good year playing downtown, made the playoffs and had the coach of the year, we still didn't draw more than a few thousand fans. Only time we have good attendance is when MSU or UM come to town to kick the shit out of us.

We need to finish the season strong and hold our heads up high knowing "they" threw everything they had at us. No matter how the at large bid voting goes.

For the record they have us at home for playoffs round 1, beating an unseeded at large. Then, going on the road to Montana and getting blown out in the round of 16.
 
They tried to give coach an opportunity to walk back his criticism of the officiating and put it on the players. He was having none of that. Coach's answers had a "I said what I said" undertone to them.

Overall positive interview. Still sounds high on Dr. Wood and the program.
 
The Hornets face a feisty Portland State team on the road this weekend in what is currently forecasted to be typical wet conditions in the Pacific Northwest. The Vikings went on the road last week and beat Cal Poly for their first win of the season. The Hornets will have their hands full as the Vikings will be looking to make it 2 straight wins.

The head of the Vikings pistol offense is split between quarterbacks John-Keawe Sagapolutele (121/209, 1327 yds, 4 TD, 10 INT) and Tyrese Smith (22/41 338 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT, 52 car, 211 yds, 3 TD). JKS is a sound passer with a good arm that carved up the Cal Poly defense a week ago. Smith is the more mobile of the two that can get chunk yardage on the ground. Running back Delon Thompson (138 car, 482 yds, 6 TD, 16 rec, 151 yds, 1 TD) is a dynamic talent and can hurt the Hornet defense in space. PSU gets creative in getting the ball to Thompson. The PSU passing game gets a lot of players involved with short underneath passes and the occasional shot down the field as 7 players have at least 13 receptions. Tight end Kristian Ingman (17 rec, 303 yds) and wide receivers Terence Loville (18 rec, 293 yds, 1 TD) and Zachary Dodson-Greene (32 rec, 260 yds, 1 TD) are the top targets in the passing game. The offensive line has some size but is not overly athletic.

The Vikings struggle to stop anyone in their 3-4 base defense. PSU did just enough to get the win at Cal Poly and will be looking to build off of that. The PSU defense is giving up over 6 yards a carry which doesn't bode well for them against the Hornets. Defensive backs Isaiah Green (80 tak, 3 TFL) and Pierce Walker (54 tak, 2 TFL) lead the Vikings in tackles. Defensive end Spencer Elliott (31 tak, 7 TFL, 4.5 sac) is the leading play disruptor with tackles for loss and sacks while defensive back Carsten Mamaril (23 tak, 2.5 TFL, 3 INT) leads the defense in interceptions.

On special teams, kicker Mathias Uribe (10/12 FG, 13/14 PAT) has a long of 40 yards and has made his last 10 field goals. Punter Tony Johnson averages almost 40 yards a punt and has dropped 12 of 42 punts inside the 20. The Viking kick returners look capable but haven't put up big numbers on the year.

The Hornets are fortunate that the Vikings are coming into this game with a win as it gives the players no excuse to overlook this game. Add to the fact that the Vikings are coming off of a win over a Cal Poly team that upset the Hornets and there is added motivation for the Hornets to show out in this game. The Hornets need to stick with their strength in the run game in a wet and soggy environment just as they did a week ago in Cheney. Better ball control is needed but the Hornets should win this game if they aren't looking ahead.
