Week 10: Sac State vs (#3) Montana State

There was an interesting stat in the Big Sky Conference's game notes for this week. SAC is 5-1 in their last six home games against ranked opponents. The only loss being the 64-61 OT loss to MSU in 2010.

the cats looked like the #1 team in the nation vs. Davis in the 2Q; looked like Azusa Pacific in the 3Q. Then regrouped and did what they had to win in the 4Q. i guess the fact that you guys ran for 436 yards last week vs North Dakota makes my statement about 'they couldn't run' look a little silly, huh? if MSU has no turnovers, they probably win next saturday. should be a good game. no excuse for a small crowd.

Not trying to excuse the 8,000 turn out for Cal Poly but I think that Halloween Saturday party night along with the Giants World Series game had a lot to do with it. It seemed there was a little older crowd than usual, not as many college age kids. Didn't you guys draw even less for Portland State? I remember a few years ago we drew about 4,000 or so on Halloween weekend.

our announced 'crowd' was about the same as yours. i was thinking that with your record, and playing Poly at home for the first time in awhile there would have been something >10000. i forgot about the halloween weekend festivities. maybe an afternoon start would have boasted the numbers a little.

in the spirit of Halloween, many of our old-time boosters came dressed up as blue chairs. unfortunately, most of the 'Aggie Pack' were dressed as empty bleachers.

At Aggie Stadium it looked like about 5000 live bodies with maybe 200 students - pathetic. Should be a full house for Sac State, though.

Why don't you just go to PB Hooters, SD?

I'll have to see if our local A&W has a dish or "just" Comcast, which doesn't have Root in our area....

What about traveling the 30 miles to watch in person?

That unfortunately requires cash I don't have right now. If the game were happening after Thanksgiving, I likely wouldn't have a problem....

SH, I will happily fund gas money (bus ticket, etc.) for you and a General Admission ticket to see you enjoy this game. No fooling.

This is arguably the coolest thing I have seen on a sports board in a long time. I signed up for this board just to say that. Way to take care of your own.

Predictions

Score: 34-28. I’ve been making some homer picks lately, why stop now. Hornet D needs to step up, excellent defense is the only way we can win this one. The Hornets need to take care of the ball as well. It will take a perfect game to pull off the upset.

Attendance: 9,457. Just like the scores I’ve been terrible with guestimating the attendance as well. This game should break 10k, but there will probably be a myriad of excuses as to why it won’t.

I'm on record at BobcatNation.com with a prediction of SAC 31 MSU 27. No trolling, I'm predicting a win here too. Let's get crazy, lets' go HORNETS.

I wish I could share the optimism, I think at this point I'm much more hopeful than optimistic.

It seems MSU is playing at a high level at just the right time - killer defense and explosive offense. Hornets hang tough but I just don't see Safron and the offense doing enough.

MSU - 34
SAC - 24

If we can somehow cause several turnovers then that could change things our way!

Win or lose this Saturday I'm very proud of this team for the great season thus far!

GO HORNETS!

It's eerily quiet on here...called around to the local bars to see who carries Root on their TV's and U31 is the lucky winner for me. Hope everyone can find a place to watch this one. I hope we play a good one.

Why didn't you check PB or Gaslamp Hooters?

I'm out the door NOW! On my way to my first Hornets football game since the Mattos March. I can't wait!!!

Thank you to one of our most valued posters for fronting for my ticket! All you guys here are amazing. Now let's see if we can all go home with that Hornet win to celebrate on!

Cuase I can walk to U31 from my place which means I don't have to sober up to drive to the bar and don't have to sober up to drive back home.

Come on Kadeezy, find us far-away folks a feed online.
Any sports bar that has Dish or DirecTV and has the expanded sports package should have access to this game. I haven't seen any links to any Root televised games on any of the webstreaming sites.

Ended up having to work and couldn't make the game!!!

I'll just leave this here...

Warning, racy pop ups

This was among the biggest games in program history and we're hurt by several incorrect judgement calls by the zebras and no instant replay. Go figure. This programs luck never allows them to get over the hump. Never.

Knowles did get at least one foot in bounds on that end zone catch. There's 4 points taken away. The MSU receiver trapped the ball on 3rd down, which resulted in a FG. There's 3 points gifted.

A 7-point swing in what ended up a 3 point game. Perhaps things play out a lot differently had those plays been called correctly. I don't know. However, the fact the game turned out to be a defensive slugfest, I'd say the Hornets chances of winning would have been a lot higher had they had those 7 points back. It baffles me how the zebras can't see well enough to make those correct calls, but they can on that bang-bang MSU punt wherein the ball barely knicked a Hornet. They obviously didn't see it as the head referee had to confer with the other officials (none of which made a call but rather bought into the Bobcat player reactions) to eventually determine something they didn't see did indeed happen. Nice. Why couldn't they do the same on Knowles TD?

Aside from the incompetence of the zebras and our never ending bad luck, the second most important factor why the Hornets lost this game was missed opportunities.

- Safron has Norrise open twice on deep routes but overthrows him both times.
- Graham has one defender between him and a long TD run but can't make him miss.

There were others, but if any one of these three plays are made .. the missed calls probably don't matter. But, as usual, the Hornets couldn't make the big played needed to overcome it all. What a buzzkill this game was.

Lastly, after all that whining and complaining, I've gotta end on a positive note and give props to the Hornets defense. They were fantastic. Considering the talent level of the opponent, this was as good a showing as I can remember. They slowed down a very potent MSU offense, which kept the team in the game until the very end. If it wasn't for the D, the two plays I bitched about probably wouldn't have been such a huge factor.

This one sure stings, though.

Well, I’ll be brief here and then I’ll head back out to the bars…
  • 1. MSU is a good team, but not great. I felt that we out played them for most of the game and this defense did an amazing job for most of it. The offense was ok but could have been better. Turnovers were the difference, that punt was a total fluke (even though it took a 5 minute referee conference to convince the last holdout ref that it was a turnover). Norrise should have caught that pass on the INT. Bad fumble by Safron late in the game, no excuse there but it might not have mattered by then. Harrison should have come back to the ball instead of camping out waiting to make the catch on the last drive. Regardless we should have still one because of…
    2. That blown TD call in the first qtr was the difference. We lost by 3, that TD would have given us 4 points. How they miss that clear TD catch by Knowles is beyond me. Of course something like this happens against a team from Montana. I hate to say it but we shouldn’t be surprised.
    3. Sperbeck Spereck Sperbeck. Mid 4th, 4th and about 6, take the fucking delay of game and punt the ball. Our D was doing great and he decides to waste a timeout and kick a 53 yard FG that was 5 yards short. All the momentum switched at this point. This was a perfect example of why the Hornets will never get over the hump with him making the calls. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:
Lastly I’m still proud of this team. They battled and should have had another upset in back to back weeks. This season is over but it was one hell of a ride. I hope they can play half this good next season. Our front 6 on defense is one of the best in the BSC, they alone have kept this Hornet program in the hunt.

We were robbed that was a TD in the first quarter and that TD would have given us the victory. Bad calls happen instant replay would have reversed that call but it's not available at the FCS level and maybe that should change.

This loss probably ended our playofff hopes so it's time to regroup and beat UCD and end the season on a high note. We have a young team a I believe the future looks bright for this team. Where's those shades.
