Week 11: #2 Sac State at Portland State

Fast start to bury PSU’s hopes? CHECK.

The only real negative so far was O’Hara’s fumble going into the endzone, which looked liked he crossed the goal line first. Not sure why they didn’t review.

Skattebo just rolled off the field after an awkward tackle. Let’s hope nothing is wrong with him.

Otherwise this game is turning out exactly as we expected on paper. Awesome performances by all.

Agreed. He looked down before the ball came out, thought it should have been challenged. Oh well, PSU gave it right back on the next play. As they say, ball don't lie.

True that.

Quick reaction:

+ Obviously domination, superior players, and coaching.

+ We are going to miss Kyle Sentkowski like crazy next year, so money, no matter the conditions.

+ Nice to see Pierre Williams heating up at the perfect time this season, as opposed to wearing down with injuries from a heavy regular season load.

+ Good to see Asher getting more throws, defenses are keying on him to run now, but seems like Taylor calls just enough to pass plays to keep them honest.

- Gotta take care of the football, we’ve been lucky so far, but good teams are going to kill us in the coming weeks if we keep that up, wet or not.

- Our kickoff coverage has to be better.

- I think we lost Jett Stanley and Skattebo to injuries, not sure what their outlook is for the Causeway. Fulcher always looks gimpy to me, then gets the ball and busts loose for a TD, so who knows…

Not getting this ever being a trap game. We would have had to have our worst game all season for PSU to even have a chance.

That was exactly the point I was trying to make.

Agree with most everything.

BTW, Skattebo was on the field and looking fine on the Marshel Martin onside kick return. So I think the bullet was dodged.

I had to watch the video twice thanks to my cat walking in front of me just as Martin was zipping to the end zone. SMH....

Is there any reason why Kyle Sentkowski won’t get a shot at an NFL roster if he decides to pursue that route? He’s money… at least as solid as Adam Vinatieri was at SDSU. Right?

I’d say there’s a very good chance he’s brought in somewhere as a UDFA camp leg - from there, you never know what can happen. But there’s so many leagues and places to land right now, you’d have to think he could win a job somewhere if he wanted. He’s accurate as hell and nails. I’d say the only drawbacks from an NFL perspective are that his leg might not reach “elite” distances, and he doesn’t kickoff (more punters blasting the ball in that role now, so who knows…) BSCFan will know way more than me.

PSU has some players on offense, but their awful defense was never going to stop the Hornets.

Wait, defense? What’s that?

Find an offensive line and continue to develop the young talent on offense and that can be a pretty scary offense to face. Other side of the ball...yeah, you got me there...

Good luck to PSU.

BTW, with the Timbers owner being forced to sell and new PSU administration on hand, any chance you guys get out of that rec center and back into Providence Park?

Final thoughts, then it’s on to Causeway Week:

Offense was unstoppable and the execution was on point. The Hornet offensive line continues to dominate and impose their will up front. Skattebo (9 car, 104 yds) continued on his stellar season alongside Fulcher (8 car, 71 yds, 2 TD) who looked impressive in the win. The passing game got back on track with Dunniway (10/15, 147 yds, 1 TD) connecting with Williams (7 rec, 136, 2 TD) who had his best game of the season just in time for a postseason run. Only blemish on the night for the offense were the 4 fumbles in the wet conditions, fortunately a couple of them came during mop up duty and neither of them had an impact on the game.

The Hornet defense was equally impressive. The PSU offense has some talent and the Hornets kept it under wraps until garbage time. Bailey (7 tak, 3 TFL, 2 sac) led the way in tackles with Mapu (6 tak) making his presence felt once again.

On special teams, Sentkowski (1/1 FG, 6/6 PAT) was perfect yet again and the Hornets got smart and started squibing the kickoffs to limit the damage there.

10-0! How sweet it is.

Stingers Up!

Well...he has kicked off 27 times this year (as of today) and has 13 touchbacks so he's at least able to reach the end zone. The squib kickoffs he's hit has brought the average down a bit.

As far as long boots, the opportunities really haven't presented themselves this year. The 56 yarder he lined up for at the end of the Montana game was into a stiff wind so they were never going to actually kick it (I think). Had it been a 56 yarder going toward Highway 50, it would've been attempted. There have been a few instances this year where it was considered to try to kick along one but our play caller decided to roll the dice instead and go for it. Most of the time it's worked.

The nice thing right now is there are options if the League doesn't happen. The USFL made it through year 1 and the third incarnation of the XFL will get going next year as well. (I think had COVID not shut down everything in 2020 that they'd have had a chance to finish their season that year.) I think with hard work and luck, maybe someone will give him a look. Perhaps he'll get a call in April after the draft ends and someone will want to bring him in as a free agent to their rookie camp? We shall see...

If only the Timbers owner was being forced to sell.

https://www.wweek.com/news/2022/11/23/will-merritt-paulson-prune-the-thorns/

Matters get complicated when the commissioner is fishing buddies with Daddy Warbucks.

Put it this way… you’re going to buy the Thorns and turn around and pay rent to Merritt Paulson? In the rules of modern sports, the only teams paying rent are in Top 5-to-7 markets. In NY and LA and Chicago, the TV money more than pays for the rent. Not for our markets, though.

It’s not for lack of effort from Timbers fans as to trying to push Paulson out the door, depending on what you think of $9.2 million pledged by fans to buy him out. It’ll take way more than that, however. And, frankly, I’m more of a Timbers fan, but have been really selective about what I attended last year. There’s been a semi-active boycott in place since September 2021.

Even if MP goes, there’s the matter of who’s buying. Hey, MP decided he’d have a football game this year, and it just so happened that Oregon State playing Montana State sold the place out. Which brings us to problem 2, something from the oldies catalog.

https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/2014/10/canzano_guess_which_local_coll.html

All the talk about Hillsboro Stadium as a semi-regular or regular home for Portland State started after that column published. Truth is that the attendance was headed down well before PSU left Providence Park. Considering that there was zero effect on attendance from the 2015 playoff team (especially compared to the D-2 days), it’s kind of a surprise PSU held on as long as it did. One thing to note: the story that has come out recently is that the breaking point came when Paulson’s org told PSU that they couldn’t store equipment in the stadium during the season anymore. PSU chose not to say anything about that when they announced the move, so while it was realistically a force-out, that’s not how it read in the media at the time. Seems like a recurring MO for Paulson. HOWEVER, I think the bigger point is that PSU has to find a way to draw crowds first.
