Week 11: Sac State @ Northern Arizona

NAU (6-3, 4-2 BSC) is surging after stomping EWU on the red turf last week. Given that the ‘Jacks have only gotten stronger as the season has progressed and that the Hornets typically play awful in Flagstaff in every sport; this shouldn’t be close. The only thing that might keep this game close will be if NAU is looking ahead to their showdown with SUU next week.

I saw a somewhat struggling Sacramento State team come into Flagstaff a few years ago for NAU's homecoming and just demolish a Jacks team that had been playing decent.

There are no givens in this conference. For the first time in, well, ever it seems that any one team can beat another this year. I'm holding my breath til the end of Saturday's game.

Any team can beat any team that is for sure. A few break hornets could have some success, this same NAU team lost to UC Davis a few weeks ago. Sac moved the ball well last week bet failed to put points on the board. Cornish missed 2 FGs that would have made it 14-6 at half. Cornish sorry but it is time to give the other guy a shot. Seems he has lost his mojo. The other kid has a big leg, not sure of accuracy but looked good in fall camp. Hopefully Agude comes back this week, with Ratliff having a breakout game maybe get something going. Defense needs help.

as bizarre as this feels to type it, we were up 21 points with 90 seconds to go in that game at Davis. they scored a late one to make it more respectable (38-24). and, it was a legit 21-point lead. Davis (again, i feel like i'm hallucinating this) manhandled NAU in the second half on both sides of the ball.

i think the lumberjacks had trouble with the oxygen-rich (compared to Flagstaff) air in Davis. Don't think that happens again this week.

I was in Reno this weekend and asked the sports book at El Dorado if there was a line on the 'causeway game' (demoted from classic). both teams are listed as underdogs.

pregame luncheon has been downgraded this year. moved from the Doubletree to the Eppie's on Howe Avenue. No word if 'Professor Eppie' will make an appearance (that's a nugget from the olden days of UHF days. commercial during Captain Delta and Big Time Wrestling).

Hornets lost big 49-35. The Hornets hung with NAU for the first quarter, but then NAU pulled ahead and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way. The Hornets got some TDs late well after NAU was in cruise control.

For the most part K-Ham (28/52, 339 yds, 4 TDs, 2 INTs) looked ok. He struggled to connect on passes down the field but was perfect on the fade routes (3 TDs to Harrison). He made a bad decision and threw into coverage for his 1st INT. The 2nd INT was a deep heave at the end of the 1st half that Agude gave up on. His mobility was on display as well as he showed good pocket presence and was able to extend some plays with his legs. He also broke a 46 yards run late in the game.

The Hornet defense was a total joke. The secondary got shat on all game long and the DE's never held contain on the read option. Pearson and Sankey were the only bright spots. Sears has been in charge of the defense for 3 years now and it has only gotten worse as the season progressed.

The kicking game continued to suck as Medeiros missed 2 FGs (41 and 53 yds). Had Medeiros made his kicks, it could have been an 8 point game with 5 minutes to go.

On to the Causeway...

It's a process and this is only year two for Sears with the defense. Offensive line needs to get better, can't have the bad sacks. Need to make the FG, sad to see all conference Cornish get pulled. Mederious got his shit which is good, wish they give him an easier kick to start. 41 and 53. No chip shots.

This is what happens with all young players. Let's relax. I remember before last season everyone was ready to can Coach Katz. Took him 7 years to become relevant in conferences
