Week 12 - Sac State at Idaho

The 6th ranked Hornets (7-3, 5-1 BSC) hit the road again and head to Moscow to face a streaky Idaho Vandal (4-6, 2-4 BSC) team that plays well at home (4-1). In week 4, the Vandals upset EWU, 35-27 at home. Two weeks later they took #4 Weber State to the limit in a 35-41 loss. Last week the Vandals played at #6 Montana well for the first half before getting steamrolled in the 2nd half and lost, 17-42. The Hornets should not take Idaho lightly.

Idaho runs a spread offense with some Pistol and read option mixed in. The Vandals have been able to run the ball effectively at times this season, it is their passing attack that has largely struggled. Idaho’s offense is currently ranked 71st/10th in FCS/BSC: 24.1 ppg (86th/11th), 379.0 ypg, 168.8 rush ypg (43rd/6th), 210.2 pass ypg (68th/10th). QB Mason Petrino (156/257, 1613 yds, 11 TD, 9 INT) leads the offense and his primary target is playmaker WR Jeff Cotton (70 rec, 911 yds, 5 TD). WR Cutrell Haywood (55 rec, 534 yds, 5 TD) also plays a key role opposite Cotton. RB Aundre Carter (106 car, 601 yds, 7 TD) is the primary back with 3 others getting a significant amount of carries on the season.

The Vandal defense is very respectable and operates from the 4-3. The Vandals are currently ranked 72nd/5th in FCS/BSC: 32.2 ppg (T-87th/7th), 397.2 ypg, 167.6 rush ypg (76th/7th), 229.6 pass ypg (70th/2nd). The Vandals have great size in the front 7 and have done a hell of a job keeping this team in some games they otherwise should not have been in (Vandals are the best 3rd down defense in the BSC). LBs Tre Walker (112 tkl, 7.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks) and Christian Elliss (79 tkl, 10.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks, 1 INT) are the heart and soul of this defense.

Idaho has struggled in the kicking game this season. Kicker Cade Coffey (8/15 FG, 31/31 PAT) struggles with anything longer than 30+ yards out. The Vandals have allowed 3 blocked field goals on the year.

Idaho does not do a lot of things right. They are the most penalized team in the BSC (81 ypg) and they are 2nd worst at protecting the QB (30 sacks allowed). Their redzone numbers on either side of the ball are near the bottom of the BSC as well (11th on offense, 12th on defense). If the Hornet defense is going to right the ship, this is the game to do so. I also heard Jason Ross state in last week’s post game that Thomson is likely to return this game so the offense will probably have its leader back. This is a must win game IMO, a win punches a ticket to the playoffs for the first time in the D1 era, and I’m going with it playing out that way.

Stingers Up!

You do a great job with these write-ups. It's very much appreciated....

One extra point of emphasis - RB Aundre Carter is a RS Freshman listed at 5'9" 241lbs. What a load!

Can't wait to be there Saturday! It'll be the closest that the Hornets play this season to where I live.

Stingers Up!

Well, a few weeks ago I would have boldly stated that the Hornets should win this game. But considering what happened this past Saturday, not knowing whether a healthy Thomson will be playing, and how the defense has regressed lately, I'm not so confident.

Any update on Thomson and other injured players?

Joe Davidson tweeted again yesterday that Thomson was “day-to-day.” Im not sure what that means, but it’s got to be more serious than that if Thomson didn’t even take the trip with the team to NAU.

He is out until davis, if then. The guy has single handedly re-written the NCAA injury waiver exemption, so this is not surprising.

If we cant control the tempo, I see this as a loss. We basically sleep walked from the end of the 1st qtr until the last two minutes of the 4th.

It was a loss, and we lucked out. Luck usually doesnt win too often.

Not sure if all this attention has gotten in their head, other teams have figured them out, injuries or lack of motivation have been the cause of the slip.

The 2-deep just came out...

Hawkins is listed as starter, which is good news.
Thomson is listed as an "OR", which probably means out again. Will be interesting to see if he travels.

I would never assume Joe Davidson has any inside information...even though he loves to pretend that he does. I also don't believe anyone on this site knows the status of Thomson...it's all conjecture.
It's difficult for me to imagine that team has lost the motivation to win but it is very reasonable to think other teams are paying attention and catching up with schemes that at the start of the season caught people by surprise. There a bunch of good coaches in the Big Sky and there is an abundance of film out there. Having said that...even after witnessing the struggles we had at NAU I still see us beating Idaho.

Thomson practiced today which is good news. If you piece together some State Hornet and Hornet Football posts he looked good! Unless Dunniway was wearing #5???

Source on Thomson being out? You're being too down on this team for no reason, it's okay to be lucky and good.

The Hornets can beat Idaho with Dunniway at the helm. Dunniway had a solid game, and was clutch during the comeback. He wasn't perfect all game but his lone mistake was an errant pass into traffic while taking a hit which led to a INT. I don't necessarily put the strip sack on him as the defender was able to make a play on the ball off of Dotson's block. NAU cashed in on both of those turnovers that really kept them in the game.

Bad game management played a key part in letting NAU back into the game last week. The Hornets were running the ball down NAU's throat in the 1st quarter and for whatever reason Taylor went away from that and started throwing the ball more which led to stalled drives. Then there was the inexplicable move to not kill the clock at the end of the 1st half that gifted NAU a FG and a tie game at half. Rinse and repeat in the 2nd half only add in the defensive implosion, which is the biggest concern that carries over into this week alongside the OL giving up too much pressure/hits on the QB.

If the Hornets take care of the ball and clean things up on the OL, the offense will be fine even if Thomson can't/doesn't go. Dunniway continues to improve and hit the check down receiver (who is almost always wide open), we also got to see him run the ball a few time as well and he is quick enough to keep a defense honest on the read option. The defense is where the concern should be, but the Idaho offense isn't even in the same discussion as NAU's so I expect a better performance on that side of the ball this week.

I disagree to a point.

Yes, the way things turned out -- they nearly lost and needed an onside kick to pull out the W.

But it goes both ways.

The Hornets led 14-0, for most of the half and 24-17 early in the Q4. Until their QB offered up a mindless pass that never should have been thrown given the situation.

Some could argue that NAU "lucked out" to benefit from that. I mean, most HS QB's understand not to softly throw the football up for grabs while holding a 7-point lead in Q4 and while driving for another score. The way Devon Medeiros has been kicking it lately, it was likely gonna be a 2 score lead for Sac State even if they didn't cap the drive with a TD.

If they forge a 2-score lead there, it never would have come down to an onside. NAU certainly didn't force Dunniway to lose his football IQ. They were quite fortunate that it happened.

That is great news! Let's hope there are no setbacks. And that he's truly healthy enough to perform well.

I absolutely agree with Vintage Hornet...SD does a great job with the weekly scouting reports on upcoming opponents and I appreciate them, too.

In case anyone wants to track the team flight to Idaho...

There’s lots of new Thomson information in this Joe Davidson SacBee article:

https://www.sacbee.com/sports/college/article237405229.html

Highlights:

-Thomson’s injury is a neck strain.

-Thomson felt like he could’ve played last week.

-Thomson had great week of practice and traveled with team.

-Dunniway also took first team snaps.

-Thomson traveled with team to Moscow.

I gotta think one way or the other, Thomson plays in today’s game. They might roll with Dunniway out of the gate and run Thomson out there if they are struggling.
