Week 2 - #9 Sac State vs Texas A&M Commerce

The Hornets (1-0) open up the home slate against the Texas A&M University - Commerce Lions (0-1) of the Southland Conference. The Lions are in their 2nd season of FCS football, first season under Head Coach Clint Dolezel and were picked to finish 6th in the SLC this season. TAMU-C looked awful in their opener at home against our Causeway foes in a 10-48 loss last Thursday night.

Offensively, the Lions spread things out and look to hit a lot of short routes underneath and to the edges. They also mix in some read option looks. The quarterback snaps were split between Josh Magana (5/7, 89 yds, 1 TD) and Peter Parrish (6/12, 54 yds, 3 INT, 8 car, 10 yds) last week with Parrish taking the bulk of the snaps. Neither of them looked impressive. Parrish tucked and ran pretty quickly when the initial read wasn’t there. Seven different players caught a pass last week, but the highlight was wide receiver Keith Miller III (2 rec, 72 yds, 1 TD) getting the Lions in the endzone on a 65 yard play. At running back, the Lions split between Ra’veion Hargrove (12 car, 48 yds,1 rec, 9 yds) and Shamenski Rucker (7 car, 47 yds, 3 rec, 17 yds). Neither of them got much going on the ground until garbage time, but Hargrove is a shifty runner that can make plays in the open field. Up front the TAMU-C offensive line has a lot of size but isn’t very athletic. They struggled with the quickness of the defensive line last week.

Defensively, TAMU-C was completely outmatched last week and will be outmatched again this week. The Lions run a 4-2-5 and struggled to stop much of anything and displayed some very poor tackling. However, to their credit, the Lions did force 4 turnovers (1 came in garbage time) against an offense that was tabbed to finish atop the BSC in offensive production. Safeties Daryion Taylor (9 tak, 1 TFL, 1 INT) and Max Epps (8 tak, 1 INT) led the Lions in tackles last week and defensive end Warren Robinson (1 tak, 1 TFL, 1 sac) got a sack and a forced fumble.

On special teams the TAMU-C kicker, Emmanuel Adagbon (1/1 FG, 1/1 PAT), looks more than capable as he hit a 39 yard field goal that was set up by an interception right before halftime. Their punter, Mitchell McGarry (6 pnt, 38.8 ypp) had a busy night with a long of 46 yards. In the kick return game, Sean-Krystoff King had a long of 25 yards.

Position Advantage

  • Quarterback: Hornets. The two Hornet quarterbacks are much better than the Lions.
  • Running Backs: Hornets. Marcus Fulcher will be the best back on the field.
  • Wide Receivers: Hornets. Hornet receivers are definitively better.
  • Tight Ends: Hornets. Even if Marshel Martin doesn’t play, backups Charlie McBride or Coleman Kunts are better than Austin Samaha.
  • Offensive Line: Hornets. The Hornet line is slightly smaller but much more athletic than the Lions.
  • Defensive Line: Hornets. The Lions defensive line is a bit undersized.
  • Linebackers: Hornets. Aarmon Bailey and Brock Mather are much better than Darryle Ware and Kyree Anderson.
  • Defensive Backs: Lions. The Lions had 2 impressive picks against a good quarterback last week. At this point, they look more capable of jumping on mistakes than the Hornet secondary.
  • Punters: Hornets. Cal McGough will have limited work compared to Mitchell McGarry in this one.
  • Kickers: Lions. Emmanuel Adagbon has made a field goal from range, Zach Schreiner has not.
  • Kick Returners: Lions. Sean-Krystoff King will just get way more opportunities than Elijah Tau-Tolliver in this one.

This game should be over well before halftime and the Hornets should dominate across the board. The Lions don’t have much D1 talent on the roster and just look like a total mess at multiple positions. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Hornet coaching staff keeps anyone with minor injuries from playing in this one. Hornet win in a rout.

Yes. Let’s get things rolling. I watched Stanford vs Hawaii, the TT play calling was exceptional as always. I hope to see more similar style of play calling this next game. Hope our “Play Calling” stays fresh and aligned with the previous years under TT. 🙏🏻🎉

I’m not feeling as confident about our Hornets. A win is a win but I just didn't feel like offense or defense was at the level we’ve experienced the last couple of years.

I know we have some new faces, especially at QB. I hope KB and Camp get more comfortable as they get more experience. IMO we’ll need them to show some improvement if we’re going to beat some of our Big Sky rivals in subsequent weeks.

Am I panicking too soon? Or is my fear unwarranted? I admit I’m not as knowledgable as some others on this board so I hope I’m not misreading this team.

I share a lot of the same sentiments Bodega. I think part of the offensive struggles were due to new personnel, Martin getting hurt, and just less creative playcalling overall. Was it bad? No. It was Troy Taylor-lite. However, it's not uncommon when you're beating teams you should beat in the early season to not open things up all the way. May have been some of that as well. Luckily towards the end of the game talent took over with KB dropping dimes to Hill, Gandy, and Gipson.

I hope the team doesn't take Texas-Commerce lightly going into the Stanford week... Rest our injured dudes this week, take more time to establish a QB pecking order, then Sunday Morning, it's on - time to get ready to play probably the most meaningful game in Hornet history.

I like that “Troy Taylor Light” offense play calling. TT play calls kept the defenses worried to not cheat on a responsibility. He Kept them “honest w flea flickers” etc.
Hoping BF watches more Hornet film from last season to refresh. TT has Stanford running our id like to call “Our Hornet Legacy Offense” past few seasons. Let’s OWN that magic here too! Just because he left we don’t need to simplify our play calling.

Interesting two-deep info:

Tight End - Great to see!
16 Marshel Martin IV (6-2, 230, Sr.)

Quarterback - Both QBs to see time, I'm sure. Won't be surprised to see KB lose the "or" come BSC play...
1 Kaiden Bennett (6-0, 193, Jr.) OR
7 Carson Camp (6-3, 213, Jr.)

Nickelback - O'Hara over the 'Rona for Week 2
6 Jace O’Hara (5-11, 199, Jr.) OR
14 Darian Pollard (6-1, 212, So.)

Random other questions people here might have info on... Why did Jordan Stanley (Jett's twin) leave the team in 2019, then come back three years later? He played great in relief of Kendall Riley.

Also, Why are Dave Lewis and Jason Ross switching between radio and TV for home games? I mean, I'm happy to have Jason on the TV broadcast so I don't have to sync up my Audacy app with ESPN+ for once. My best guess is that it gives Jason some tape, and Dave is good on the radio too, so who knows?

You're panicking and falling into the fallacy that the rest of the BSC fans have by thinking that TT was the end all and be all of our program's success. Yes, TT played a major role in getting us into this dominant position, but the reality is that former President Nelsen was the one who created the environment that allowed this program to reach the heights that it has. Nelsen brought in an AD with D1 experience in Orr, and then followed it up with investing funds (operating budget) needed to allow Hornet FB (and other programs) to transform from a competitive program into the championship caliber program it currently is. Nelsen's parting gift (coupled with Orr's execution) was ensuring that it all didn't fall apart by swiftly promoting some of the high quality coaches that were brought here by TT into the roles that they currently have within the program. We have a new president, but unless President Wood drastically cuts athletics funding, I don't see why this program would regress unless all of our top coaches are poached.

I never understood all the dooming this past offseason, and I don't understand the dooming now. We're threepeat BSC champs, it's long past time some of you folks started acting like it. This is a damn good football team. As good as any of the prior championship teams in the past 3 seasons? That remains to be proven, but I think this team can be just as good, if not better. The Hornets completely dominated a middle of the road Southland team last week on the road in hot and humid conditions with a reshuffled offensive line, our best receiving weapon on the bench after the opening drive, and a conservative playbook. Yes we'll face stiffer competition but it was a solid start to the year.

I can understand the skepticism. But wrt to the offense, it’s hard to expect either of the two QB’s to pick right up where Dunniway and O’Hara left off.

Remember, Dunniway had a rocky start to his Hornet career but the past two seasons was much more experienced. O’Hara starred at his previous program before coming to the Hornets and also had a lot of experience.

KB has very, very little experience and while Camp has experience he just joined the program. So, IMO, it’s not shocking that the offense wasn’t close to what it was the past couple seasons. Like Dunniway, I believe either or both these kids could show major improvement over the course of this season and heading into next season.

We also need to keep in mind that the team was playing w/o Steifel, O’Hara and Marshel Martin, who left the game early on. Having those guys back can help a lot too.

I am hoping Pollard isn't in the cast/club all year -- he played really well last week - but I do expect them to split reps 50/50 the rest of the year --- I definitely see Pollard's versatility as a blitzer helping us here.

Rewatched the Commerce/Aggies game in full. The Commerce coaching staff is full of Arena League coaches (outside of the D-Coordinator). It's a bizarrely put together staff and they looked to struggle with simple offensive play-calling in Week 1. While Commerce was talented under the old staff, they lost a lot player wise, and seem to have some major talent gaps. I don't think they look likely to win a game this year. This could get UGLY.

Commerce lost one of if not THE best WR in FCS on the Transfer Portal this off-season to Arkansas.

Going to be a warm one -- with how I saw these guys not handle the heat at home last week, I think it's just another advantage for the Hornets.

Sound not working for me - looks like we’re got several starters out?

That's not surprising...I heard on FB that ESPN+ was having technical difficulties with several games today.

I watched a couple of HBCU games on TV and now I have that debacle in Corvallis on Pac-12 Network right now.

I'm have a bad deal with Spectrum right now...as "compensation" for their stupid decision to cut off ABC/ESPN, they've offered me Fubo. No thank you! I don't do streaming....

The issues have nothing to do with ESPN+ you clueless twat. Unless it’s an ESPN produced event on plus (like the FCS Playoffs) the schools are 100% responsible for the broadcast. They do it in house or they contract out. So the issue was from KMAX. The over the air broadcast had no audio at the start as well.
