34-6 Hornet win. Total domination against an inferior opponent as the Hornets took care of business and extended the regular season winning streak to 21 games. This game was wrapped up by halftime as the Hornets let off the throttle in the second half.
The Hornet offense took the opening drive 80 yards and never looked back in this one. Kaiden Bennett (14/22, 176 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT, 10 car, 101 yds, 2 TD) had a solid game aside from one bad read. The running backs had a busy night as Marcus Fulcher (12 car, 79 yds, 1 TD), Elijah Tau-Tolliver (7 car, 59 yds), and Ezra Moleni (8 car, 27 yds) pounded away at the TAMU-C defense. Coleman Kuntz (4 rec, 68 yds) led the Hornets in receiving but it was an acrobatic touchdown catch by Chris Miller (1 rec, 16 yds, 1 RD) that made the passing game highlight for the night.
The Hornet defense was equally impressive as they held the Lions to a whooping 206 yards of total offense, much of which came late in the game when it was well in hand. The Hornet secondary kept the Lions to just 72 passing yards as Dillon Juniel had 3 pass break ups in the game. Gavin Davis-Smith (7 tak) led the Hornet in tackling while Cameron Broussard, Brock Mather, and Leke Fashola each had 6. Mather (6 tak, 2 TFL, 1 INT) forced a turnover and the Hornets got a sack on the night. The defense has 2 stops inside the redzone and the only points allowed came after a long interception return by TAMU-C.
Hornet special teams did well covering kick returns with the exception of a 61 yard return by Max Epps. Zach Schreiner (2/2 FG, 4/4 PAT) looked good on place kicks, but both he and Evan Kiely struggled on kickoffs as a couple of them went out of bounds. Cal McGough (3 pnt, 46 ypp) landed all of his punts inside the 20.
Plenty of positives to take into the following week as this team continues to grow. The Hornets were tested late in the 1st half in this one. Following the Lions converting a touchdown off of the interception, the Hornets responded in the final 40 seconds by marching down the field and closing the half out with a field goal. Not only did this show that the Hornets could move the ball quickly when needed, but also that we have a head coach that knows how to use a timeout in the closing phase of a half.
Also great crowd on hand tonight. The west grandstand was near capacity as over 12.3k came to the game tonight. The student section was packed by the opening kick.
