Week 2 - at South Dakota

Vermillion, where the Weber St Wildcats come for the FCS level season non-conference match up vs the Coyotes of Univ. of South Dakota. Both teams smarting by beatings from the FBS bullies (er...Aggies & Lobos), a disappointing effort by the Wildcats & the Coyotes lost to New Mexico 48-21.

Can our Wildcats correct the glaring flaws ? HC Jay Hill (quoted from Standard-Examiner article): "We played poorly...We've got a lot of self-reflection, starting with the coaches...". Plenty of work-in-progress ahead for sure. Hope it's progress, not regress!

Game time listed for 1pm, Sat, 10 Sep.

Go get a win Wildcats!! :thumb:

Catch a couple of notable FCS wins last week? 1> BSC win over Pac 12! -- Eastern Washington beat Washington St 45-42 (YES ! ) & 2> Bronco Mendenhal's Virginia lost to FCS Richmond 37-20 (he misses BYU already?). BSC goes 5-8 in Week 1 (Idaho beat MSU 20-17 & Stony Brook beat UND with a blocked punt return for a TD ??? WOW!)

FCS STATS Top 25 (BSC):
8. EWU
14. UM
16. PSU
19. NAU
25. UND (? noted that Stony Brook received some votes in win over UND) as well as SUU

Weber State ?? (fell out)

:coffee:

Weber State fell out? Well, they should have based on their performance. I watched several of our BSC brethren this past week, including EWU, UM, MSU, NAU, and SUU, and am far from impressed with what I saw in Logan in comparison. The ONLY positive that got me excited was some TE play in the mix and Vollert's performance.

It's way, way too early to be overly negative. We played up and got beat. The Aggies were excited to play and the Wildcats not so much. It's over. We know what we need to do to get better. Was it a measuring stick for us? Sure. Does it define our whole season? NO.

We just need to learn from it and move on.

We will learn more about ourselves, and the Aggies, this week. Even then, it is not the end all to the season. The good teams get better. That is just how it works. :coffee:

Either USU is far better than what they were supposed to be this year or Weber isn't anywhere near as good as we thought they'd be this year.

Well, a new week and another chance. What are we facing in South Dakota?

FYI: (If you didn't read it on another thread)

Should add to this thread, after reading the CNuanez latest post, Weber State did receive some votes in the "Other" category in the STATS FCS Poll: SUU, Cal Poly, Weber State, Montana State, and next opponent South Dakota, among others also not BSC.

For whatever it's worth as to the poll, interesting in Week 2 are the Top Ranked matchups involving BSC teams: Eastern Washington (8) meets North Dakota State (1); Montana (14) visits Northern Iowa (3); Northern Arizona (19) is at Western Illinois (18)...so possibly a little measuring stick app will be going on. :coffee:

From USD fan forum: Starting QB Streveler, transfer from Minnesota, had 131 yds. rushing on 16 carries, 10 of 13 passes for 117 yds., no interceptions against New Mexico; senior Saeger came in game late 3rd Qtr. Coyotes led 14-7 at one point in the game.

Fan post: " My money is on Streveler & Bouma running wild on Weber St with hope that our defense looks much more organized against team that isn't running the option...Yotes 37-24"...

Note: USD beat NDSU in '15 24-21; will reciprocate Weber by returning to game in Ogden in 2018.

Game will be on ESPN3.

Since athletics is no longer concerned with giving an injury report we have to do the work ourselves. Based off of the two-deep, it looks like Mitch Tulane, Emmett Tela, Jawain Harrison, Justus Brown, Jeremy Maxwell, Alema Key, Eric Wilkes and Parker Preator are all injured. YIKES!! Our defense has been hammered so far this season. Zach Smith didn't play last Thursday due to injury along with a handful of other players.

I need to ask, what is the issue. Are the guys not being conditioned correctly? Way too many injuries to start the season. This seems to be an issue with lifting more than anything else.

Ouch...lots of key injuries and backups down. I hope we can get healthy quick.

Didnt really notice this until now, but it almost seems like a BSC vs. MVC Challenge this weekend.

Weber at South Dakota
Montana at UNI
Eastern at NDSU
Northern Arizona at Western Illinois

Weird that they are all road games, but still good seeing the Big Sky play the Missouri Valley. I would like more challenges between the MVC and the Southland. It almost seems like there is a BSC vs. MW too. LOL

If the team shows up this is a winnable game. And after what I witnessed at USU, nothing short of a Weber victory in this one will get me re-energized for this football season. I went into Logan with high hopes and left feeling embarrassed. We saw much better showings against PAC12 teams the past two seasons, and this was supposed to be the year that Hill's program turned the corner. And all the administration does to try to keep me supporting the program is to feed me more free tickets. :bad:

At least Hill recognizes the Wildcats played poorly & did a very poor job of stopping the Aggies run offense, etc.; said it doesn't get easier vs South Dakota...their QB is a versatile runner & good passer. Few comments on offense, he thought there were moments (especially 2nd Qtr) where the play was decent, if it had not been for some drops, miscues...it was a missed opportunity to make it competitive going into halftime, what with all the glaring negatives. Seemed to hold positive while admitting coach's/players have a lot of improvements to make from game 1 to game 2.

Game 2 definitely looks challenging, if the Wildcat QB/WR/DE play shows positives, there's maybe some sun rays peaking thru the dark clouds. :twocents:

This should be a good measuring stick game for Weber.

South Dakota is very similar to us, they love to run the football a lot. The difference is their QB play is better than ours. This will be another test. But it is a very winnable game.

I believe we will win ugly. 21-17. Running game, turnovers, and time of possession are key. If we are on defense too long or have to rely on Clark to win the game, we lose by 7.

Tough game for the Wildcats this week. Defense needs to show up this week. Offense needs to score a few points in order for the Wildcats to win. Things have got to change. Driving through the Badlands in the morning on my way to Mitchell, see you at the DakotaDOME

I think this is a very winnable game for the Wildcats. I'm not really confident in our ability to stop the run, which will likely be a problem vs the Coyotes. We also really need to tighten up our special teams play. We can't give them a short field all game. Win the turnover margin, win the field position battle, and stopping the run are keys to the game in my mind. A low scoring game favors the Cats.
17-14 Wildcats win.

I really wish Weber would do something like this for football and basketball but that would take effort. :stir:

Goes against our motto..."JUST ENOUGH!"

Why do something that builds a fan base. More fans means more accountability. Who wants that?

Okay...well, so, USD has a very strong running game, much like USU. Weber has a Swiss cheese defense right now, mostly due to injuries. I'm thinking that the Cats most likely, are going to struggle. I really hope I'm wrong, but that is how I'm seeing it. Until we can get our starters back on the field, Weber will really have a hard time on defense. Offensively, we will be able to run far more efficiently than last week, but still really struggle. Why? Because we have a QB who struggles hitting an open man 10 yards away (please see the pass to McKay Murphy). See the consistent theme...STRUGGLES.

However, one positive, whenever Hill has been side swiped as a coach, his teams have responded. I'm sure they will show up tomorrow and really play tough. One thing about Jay's teams, they are tough as nails and will show it tomorrow. Yes, our defense is struggling due to injuries, but I'm thinking there will be a few guys step up. After a beat down, Jay has had his team ready and they definitely compete. Should be an interesting game.
