Week 2 - NDSU

One can easily assume the Bison are licking their chops (or wounded egos) awaiting for a Big Sky foe to visit Fargo. Will be interesting to see the action this week, looking for improvement, progress. As many college coaches say, the improvement between 1st & 2nd game is most important & look for the biggest difference (hopefully positive).

Will be a tough challenge for the Wildcats, but as QB Clark stated in post OSU game comments, "We're going to shock the world this year. We're going to be really good. That's all I've got to say about that. We'll let our play do the rest of the talking."

Hmmm, we'll see if it's 2nd week or later on. Anyone know about what the TV or online coverage is? :coffee:

Give me a break. The WSU coaching staff had 9 months to prepare for the OSU game they also made no adjustments at half time to respond to the 1st half. Not to mention they went up against Gary Anderson who they knew exactly what type of offensive and defensive schemes they were going to run and they had zero answers as in zero points scored by the offense.

I'm certainly willing to give the players and coaches the benefit of the doubt on this one. First game, against a PAC12 team, on the road, and coming off the two worst seasons in school history. I feel it was a more than respectful showing by the D. The offenses lack of productivity may have had something to do with OSUs D.

This week's game is a much better gage of where we need to get to. Their program is way ahead of ours, but at least they are in our subdivision. I would love a win this week, but I will be happy with another respectable showing. :coffee:

Agreed on the first part to a degree but the problem is that NDSU is better than OSU so the FCS comment is rather moot. As noted in another thread, there looks to be quite a bit of parity in the BSC and that could be more trouble for Weber. I've seen UM, EWU, SUU, CP, NDSU, and WSU already this young season and am having a hard time seeing the offense being productive against any of them at this point. I agree with ncaa, Weber has had plenty of time to be ready with an offense capable of a single offensive score against a not too hot OSU team. Still not hitting the panic button but am plenty nervous with what I've seen so far.

I read that quote too and would feel a lot better if he would have said something completely different. I would have loved to hear something to the effect of, "the offense has a lot to improve on and quickly if we hope to compete in the BSC. Our inability to put points on the board kept us from having a shot at the upset and will really hamper our ability to compete in a tough BSC if we don't step up our game." Something with a tone like that would make me believe they understand that they have some serious corrections to make and that they aren't satisfied from just not being blown out against the bottom of the PACx.

good to see that we are getting real about the discussion of WSU football this year.
in years past was to much fluff and rah rah talk.
Nice to see fans keeping it real...
See you in Fargo,NDS is going to be a tough game for the CATS, hope the Offensive Coordinator has some answers this week instead of 3 yard dump passes when it is 3rd and 8....

I like Clark's confidence here but...
I really hope Steve Clark can put something together that will be get the Wildcats on the board. In his second year, he should know what type of offense best suits his quarterback and personnel.
I am hoping for a close game but if the offense doesn't show up than it will be a long day for the defense.

If can get some three offensive touchdowns, I'll consider that a moral victory no matter the final score.

I don't know if it's the play calling or the fact we need a new QB, but if we can fix one or the other or both I think we have a chance to be competitive with just about any team in the Big Sky.

Love our defense. But we can't rely solely on them to keep us in the game.

im getting worried that many of us are in agreement so early-we must all be wrong. but if we don't clean up the off play calling we are going to be patting ourselves on the back again next week...I get the idea that the staff is either not willing to expand and adapt to what the def is showing OR doesn't know how to. I suppose the latter would be worse but both are bad. luckily, that was just one game, but as others have pointed out- we had plenty of time to prepare for a defense that was if not beatable one that we should absolutely able to score on. I re-watched the game and may have been too neg on QB play. Jad was solid looking on the simple stuff-we just didn't move the ball. I'm hoping that we adopt a more varied approach to the off play calling as we have the talent to do it I think. certainly can't say that it would be worse. there were a couple more picks that got called back on penalties so maybe I'm just asking for it but think we need more of a vertical game to go with the basics.

Things to remember about the offense:
1. PAC-12 Defenses are a lot quicker than FCS defenses.
2. If there is 1 thing that Gary Anderson could fix immediately at OSU it is defense. He has done that everywhere he has gone. Remember the dumpster fire that was USU football? USU became known for defense.
3. Last 3 FBS scores 70-6, 70-7, and 45-14. I think Weber is headed in the right direction.

Lets not get to carried away, Weber has only won 6 games over the last three seasons. Being close to OSU is a huge improvement to where the Cats have been.

As for the offense, yes, it was hard to watch. You could tell the plays were scripted and that there was very little change in the plan. I feel that the offense actually has been tailored for Jadrian. Billy is a far better passing QB. That goes without saying, but he didn't take care of the ball very well. Jadrian is a better running QB, who tends to see the field better. No matter who is behind the ball, you have to have receivers who can catch the ball and run the correct routes.

Things to be optimistic about: OL did an admirable job of protecting. Rush offense wasn't great, but then again, they are not going to face a line that big again. TE's ran some really nice routes and were open frequently throughout the game. Too bad two or three great looks were dropped by them that put the Cats in 3rd and long situations seemingly each time. Running back depth looked good on Friday. Wilkes is not a return man though. Cordero Dixon is on the field. Let him return kicks.

Nothing too shocking. Virtually the same exact 2-Deep as last week. No news on injuries, which hopefully there aren't any major ones and a decent review of the upcoming contest. Very vanilla!
True. But I watched NDSU's coach's press conference and he was very candid about injuries and very open about answering all the questions asked of him (said Josh Burton is as good of a Free Safety as there is in the country). Very impressive. What you get from NDSU is so much different than what you get from Weber. Don't know if Weber and the local media just realize that very few people care and make no effort to get information out, or if Coach Hill just won't speak about specifics like injuries. Frustrating.

Most coaches don't give out information to help their opponent beat them. If they do give out that sort of information, it is often misleading. The times that injury information is totally transparent is when it is already public information. Otherwise, why would a coach tell another coach that his corner back is a step slow this week due to a nagging ankle issue, or something like that. I wouldn't do it unless I wanted them to throw at my all American back.

Coaches either remain silent or they lie about injuries. Take your choice. :coffee:

Probably some truth to that, although I don't think most coaches straight up lie. If the NDSU coach was lying about any injury then he's very convincing. But my point was more that the amount and quality of information we generally get from athletics and the media is fair at best. I mean, is it really too much to ask for information on why our returning starting RB didn't play at all, and apparently didn't even make the trip? But unless more people actually want that information I guess I can't blame them for doing the bare minimum. Let's face it, if Weber held a weekly press conference for Coach Hill you'd probably have two people there.

For those of you hoping to see Kelly hilinski playing Qb this season you will have to wait!!! They decided to move Kelly to TE this week. I guess WSU is just so deep in talent at the QB position so they are moving kelly to TE. I am sure when they tell kelly to crack down on a 300 pound DT he is going to be jacked and ready to go? This move by the offensive Cordinator tells you a couple of things. First of all he is not a capable recruiter of Qb's because he recruited Kelly 7 months ago and gave him a scholarship to come to WSU to come in and compete immediately as a starter since he was a transfer and now that kelly is a bust at Qb they are going to ask him a to be a TE. I am sure Kelly is wondering I could of transferred a lot of places as a transfer QB and now he got the old sausage after the first game. I am sure in years down the road when Kelly is playing in some flag football city league in socal he will be asking himself what if I would of transferred somewhere else other than WSU who try to make me a TE. What a disaster!

I believe Hilinski is a walk-on. This is his third school and he was benched last season in JC ball. Not sure why anyone would think he's the answer at QB.
