Week 2: UNI (#21) @ SAC STATE (RV)

UNI looked really good on the road against #7 Iowa State. Their OL and DL are just a group of nasty boyz, they threw around a Top 10 FBS line. They have a top QB,RB, and WR that scare me, more details to follow, but I’m not high on a W here.

Week 2 - Sac State vs #21 Northern Iowa

The 21st ranked Northern Iowa Panthers (0-1, 0-0 MVFC) come to town off of a hard fought battle and a close 16-10 loss at 7th ranked Iowa State. UNI gave the Cyclones all they could handle and had a chance for the win late in the game.

UNI is a premier program among the FCS ranks and is well disciplined and very physical on both sides of the ball. The Panthers offense is very balanced and they have a monster of an offensive line that is built for the ground and pound. QB Will McElvain (21/34, 230 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT) is an elusive scrambler with a good arm. His main targets at WR are Quan Hampton (8 rec, 99 yds, 1 TD) and Deion McShane (5 rec, 65 yds). McElvain hit 8 different players against ISU. UNI rotated a trio of RBs last week with RB Dom Williams (12 car, 43 yds, 1 rec, 4 yds) getting the bulk of the work. This offense has plenty of talent that can make big plays.

Defensively, the Panthers have a stout defense that is anchored by NT Jared Brinkman (6 tkl) who is an All-American and is on the Buck Buchanan Award watch list. LB Alfonzo Lambert (9 tkl, 1 TFL) and DB Austin Evans (9 tlk) led the team in tackles last week. This defense is stacked with talent.

UNI has an All-American K in Matthew Cook (1/1 FG, 1/1 PAT). The Panther’s special teams played well at ISU and didn’t give up any big plays in the return game.

The Hornets have their work cut out for them this week. In all honesty, I don’t see this game being close unless the Hornet OL has tremendous improvement. I don’t anticipate the Hornets having much success trying to run inside against this UNI defensive front so I think we’ll see a game plan that attacks the edges with some shots taken down the field. For UNI, I expect to see some smash mouth football behind that massive OL and an aggressive attack to get after O’Hara on the other side of the ball. I’ve got a UNI win by 2+ TDs.

Stingers Up!

I have faith that we will win this game. We learned from being unprepared for a national-level opponent (Austin Peay). We will win this game, and it will be O'Hara's and Dotson's coming out party for Payton talk....

The power of positive thinking...and I LOVE IT! Stingers Up!!!

The new two-deep is on HornetSports.com - still no Jarrell Anderson, Ngata, or Lynch.

Same OL mix, no significant changes that I can see.

Here's some more positive thinking...if we don't play better and more physical than last week I am ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE we are going to get beat like a gararge-sale set of bongo drums.

100% agree OSH - I will be there with family in tow to find out!

I’m sure there will be more fires under asses for the home opener against a FCS power - we shall see!

Will be there with the wife. I looked at the highlights from N Iowa, the have size and speed. The QB has a lightning quick trigger with the ability to thread defenders. Hope we defend that long ball Saturday, cuz I am positive they will see some deep ball throws.

UNI Vs Sac State:
I think UNI tough matchup. They may be over confident rolling into SacTown? Let’s hope.so.
Hornets need to play w precision, misdirection, and timing to offset that physical team.
Look for screens, draws, slants etc and a few trick plays. Will be a tough game! I think this game will be decided by about 10 points. 34-24. UNI only based on how well they played last week!
Hope im wrong!!!!! Go Hornets

Am I seeing things, or was O’Hara 100% DOWN on that scramble?! Ref’s boning us continues right out of the gate…

Calling this. UNI punter Murphy is going to rollout for rugby style punt and run with it if we keep turning and burning for the return like that…

Half ain’t over, but 4th and 5, 50 seconds left - coulda tried to get first by drawing d offsides. Instead, confusion between O and ST.

Sentkowski nails it anyways. 👍

Wow, UNI switches QBs - looks unbeatable. We change to Dunniway at half, and implode.

Games over. 🥴

It’s a beat down now. Can’t blame the Defense if offense keeps turning the ball over like this. Sad state of affairs with QB play.

The explosive offense we saw at the first half of ‘19 is far gone without KT.

The long ball is just not there, so there’s no respect for the run game. But in college football nowadays, you just have to be able to throw the ball.
