Week 3 - #21/21 Sac State (0-2) vs Mercyhurst (1-1) @ 6PM, Hornet Stadium!

Good interview. Coach Marion was talking up a couple of their players but it's pretty evident we'll have the talent advantage across the board on both sides of the ball. Good to see Williams getting the start following his solid performance off the bench last week. This should be a game where everyone gets on the field.

49-28 Hornet win. Coach Marion gets his first win as a head coach and on the season as the Hornets slog out a game and pull away late. First off, hats off to Murcyhurst. They played a lot better than I anticipated so I completely whiffed on their potential. Hornet mistakes early gave the Lakers hope and they used it well and hung around a lot longer that should have been allowed.

The Hornet offense had a strong start to the game then got bogged down by mistakes. The Hornets didn't hold the ball for much but only failed to score when they stopped themselves. Cardell Williams (8/17, 176 yds, 2 TD, 6 car, 52 yds, 1 TD) had an efficient game and did a good job of running the offense. Damian Henderson II (12 car, 98 yds, 3 TD, 1 rec, 12 yds) had a breakout game and just narrowly missed the century mark. Rodney Hammond Jr (11 car, 81 yds, 1 rec, 4 yds) also had a strong showing as the Hornets averaged 8.3 yard per carry. Ernest Campbell (2 rec, 78 yds, 1 TD) had a big play at the end of the 1st half that allowed the Hornets to snatch the momentum and the lead just before the half.

Defensively the Hornets got the job done despite being on the field for over 35 minutes. The Hornets struggled to get off the field in critical 3rd and 4th down situations that allowed the Lakers to hang around longer than they should have. Ultimately, the Hornets got a redzone stop and forced some turnovers late in the game to secure the win. Oscar Moore (8 tak, 1.5 TFL, 1 sac, 1 INT) led the defense as the Hornets had 7 TFLs, 3 sacks, and 2 interceptions on the night.

Special teams had a sound game. Grant Meadors (7/7 PAT) nailed all the freebies and Cal McGough pinned his lone punt inside the 20. Coverage teams keep the return game in check as well. Tim Connerly Jr and Hammond both had notable returns on kickoffs.

Hornets had too sloppy of a game against a "get things right" opponent. 8 penalties for 73 yards isn't crisp as it needs to be. The offensive line took care of business against an inferior front and we got to see what the Hornet offense looks like when the running game gets going. Plenty of room for improvement on both sides of the ball but getting the first win of the Marion era has to feel good for this program.

Interesting postgame comments from Marion regarding his disappointment with the attendance. Anyone have the direct quote? I'm locked out of SacBee.

I haven't seen/watched the comments. But the team was 0-2 playing Mercyhurst, who nobody's heard of. But mostly the team was 0-2.

2024 home opener vs. Nicholls drew 12,000. Sac was also 0-2 at the time.
2023 home opener vs. Commerce drew 12,000. Sac was 1-0 and ranked #9.
2022 home opener vs. Utah Tech drew 10,000. Sac was 0-0 and ranked #7.

Although the opponents aren't sexy, 12,000 seems like the norm. And its actually pretty strong if you go back to the pre Covid years. Its something to build on.

I'm sure you all would agree, Marion has got to earn this. California football fans are a tough draw, at every level.

“To be honest,” Marion said afterward, “I was embarrassed about our performance in the first half. I’m excited to win. It’s hard to win in college football, especially when you bring in all new coaches, all new players, from across the country. I’m proud of our team for being resilient in the second half, making plays when they needed to finish the game, but we started sluggish and slow.”

And,

‘I need people to be dogs’

Marion has rejuvenated a program that went from winning Big Sky Conference championships in 2019, 2021 and 2022 before a dip to three victories last season, running high-energy practices and telling his players and coaches that “one great year can change your life.

And he has one requirement that is non-negotiable.

“I need people to be dogs,” he said, imploring relentless effort at all times. “I’m a dog, and it’s going to be uncomfortable if you’re around me and you’re not a dog. I’ve been a real football guy my entire life. I’m used to winning. I’m a winner, so I need people to be dogs around me. We did a good job of being dogs in the second half, but a real dog doesn’t need a motivational speech to do it every week.”

Thanks Rat! He's not wrong, it was U-G-L-U to start... Time to put it together and whip UCA.
