Week 3: Hornets @ Weber State, Big Sky Opener

As much as I would love to think we can suddenly stroll back to Utah and win this game, I don't think we can...

This is the WSU opener, we lay big fat eggs in Utah, and I don't think we can hang. I know I'm the negative nancy on this board, but I honestly think this is an L. Today, I'm betting we're 20-25 in the rankings and I think this loss will drop us out entirely.

HOWEVER, I predict we'll stand at 2-2 and be ranked once again following a home opening victory against UM.

It'll be interesting to see which quarterback bounces back quickly: Hoke for WSU or Fleming. The key will be the ground game for both teams IMO. Both teams are going to be hungry for a win: The Hornets to prove that they are still a good team and Weber looking win #1 on the year.

I don't think you're being negative I think it's a realistic expecation - I actually agree and I don't feel this is a game we'll win. We were beat soundly in EVERY aspect of the game Saturday and I'm concerned we'll fall into the same thing this week. I think WSU has a solid OL which can limit our ability to pressure the QB, but they also run the ball much better than SUU (solid numbers against Wyoming - 227 yards rushing). The biggest issue to me is that this is another emotional game for the opponent, their home opener, so we'll have to play flawlessly.

HOWEVER, I predict we'll stand at 2-2 and be ranked once again following a home opening victory against UM.

I'm also not as optimistic about the Montana game - please help me understand why you feel we'll win?

Weber's run defense was just God awful against USU: 440 yards on the ground for the Aggies. There OL wasnt great either as Hoke was sacked 4 times. USU was pressuring all game on the pass and Hoke only managed 20-33 for 138 yards passing (almost like Fleming). The Aggies pressured into 3rd and long most of the game. The Wildcats were 3-17 on third down. If we can do that, I think we have a good chance at the game. Just comes down to execution. Who wants it more...

I agree with SHA. I'm hoping to get my weekly preview out some time this evening. Stay tuned...

The only positive that we have going for us is that Weber will be playing on their new surface for the first time Saturday. Which means no chunky natural grass. I watched them game on KCRA 3.2 on Saturday and by no means do I believe we lost the game because of the playing surface, but the field was visibly chunky and watered down. It was terrible...

I think that UM will beat EWU this weekend and will come into Sacramento thinking that their sh!t don't stink. I think we'll finally be hungry and comfortable at home. The crowd will have our backs for once. Also, I think that we can move the ball against the Grizzlies and contain their first-year QB.

Hey Hornet fans, this is gonna be a bruiser of a game, bring the Aspirin.

Im hoping Weber can get over thier whooping at the hands of the aggs of USU and come out and get a win vs a very strong Hornets team.

Both teams are looking for some redemption.

In a defensive game I'm predicting Weber to win 24-17 on thier brand new field.

Hopefully its a fun, entertaining and INJURY-LESS football game.

Any of you guys re-making the trip to Utah?

Based on USU's first two games, they look really good. I'm not sure we can expect Sac to perform at the level USU did on Saturday, I think Wyoming is a better comparison. Against Wyoming, Weber's OL was very good and I can only imagine they will be better at home.

I'm not saying Sac can't win, I'm stating based on their play I don't expect them to win.

Can't wait until Saturday, our home opener.

I have no idea how to predict this game. Both teams have been Jekyll and Hydes through the first two games. If the Weber team that showed up against Wyo and the 1st half of the USU game (Weber actually lead 17-10 in the second quarter and the game was tied at the half) shows up to this game, then I like Weber's chances. On the other hand, if the Weber team that played in the second half of the USU game shows up, then it could easily be a Sac St blow out. That second half vs USU was possibly the worst I have ever seen a Weber team play.

I think this game will go a long way in telling us a lot about these two teams. I think this game sets the tempo for the rest of the season. I really feel that this is a huge game for both teams.

If we are 20th why isn't SUU ranked? They manhandled our program.

After 26yrs of following Hornet football, I don't know what to expect this Saturday against Weber. The fan side wants to say we will get a win, but reality says we will slink home with another excuse (loss).

Who schedules our games? We need a home game to boost morale.

Do not know exactly why the SUU game was not in Sacramento. The Sept. 10th date was the last date to fill and SUU had only 4 home games so maybe something was worked out to give them a 5th home game hosting the Hornets. So Sac and EWU are the only BSC schools without a home game until the last Saturday in Sept.
And believe Sac has to return right back to Cedar City next year with the new BSC scheduling.

i understand sac fans being down after the suu loss but suu offense might be one of the best in fcs this yr. before the season started i figured a ranked suu team to come to weber week 7. though i was surprised to see sac lose the way they did. i watched most of the game and the griz/cp game.

weber fans shouldn't be so optimistic after a demoralizing 0-2 start vs fbs. hopefully our team is ready for conference play. i really hate our 2 fbs game ooc every yr, it is complete crap. :ohno:

sac/wsu should be a great game to watch. wsu' first home game, the new turf, wanting revenge for last yr's loss at sac.

sac has never won in ogden in football not that that means squat for saturday. i saw sac's first win in ogden in basketball when i was a student, our coach got fired in the offseason. sac really should have won the yr before. poor big sky officialting allowed a wsu basketball after the final buzzer and we won. the next yr sac got the win and jerome took the game ball home to sac.

Southern Utah only had 3 home games before scheduling us. They were desperate for a home game, we had options. We better have gotten money for this game or a agreement to move next year's game to Sacramento. Cedar City is not an easy trip, fly to Vegas then take a bus 180 miles.

Coach Jenkins deserved that ball after the screwin' the prior year! Lol...

I'll give respect where it is due, SUU is a better team. BUT, the SUU offense is not that good. They have no running game. We will face teams with much, much better offenses this season.

The Hornets pulled a Suck State. Plain and simple.

I believe a Weber fan asked if anyone would be coming to Utah for the game and I must say that at this point I persoanlly wouldn't spend the money on travel, lodging, etc. knowing the Hornets are the same 'we lost' team that they always have been, why bother?

I'd rather watch it on the computer so that I can turn it off at halftime.

Week 3: Sac State @ Weber State

The Hornets will be heading to Utah for the second consecutive week to face a tough Weber State program. It’s hard to get a barometer for this WSU team as their first two opponents were FBS programs. WSU should have knocked off a weak Wyoming program in week 1; however their defense let that one slip away. Last week they battled tough at Utah State and went into halftime tied at 17. WSU then struggled in the second half as USU ran away with it to win 54-17.

Offense
WSU has a big and tough OL. This is the strength of their offense. Behind that, they have a fairly inexperienced mobile QB who can make some plays. They also have some talented RB’s who are more than capable of putting of big numbers behind their huge OL. This team will probably come at the Hornets with their power running game and look to wear down the Hornet front 6. WSU’s statistical leaders:
  • • Hoke, QB: 39 of 61 for 452 yards, 3 TD’s, 19 carries for 59 yards
    • Booker, RB: 26 carries for 130 yards, 1 TD, 4 recs for 19 yards
    • Johnson, WR: 11 recs for 152 yards, 2 TD’s
    • Kehano, WR: 2 recs for 85 yards
    • Shufford, WR: 5 recs for 62 yards
    • Rought, WR: 5 recs for 52 yards
    • Hinds, RB: 14 carries for 41 yards, 2 TD’s, 1 rec for 24 yards
    • OL: Allowed 5 sacks
    • Avg TOP: 33:40
    • Conversions: 8/33 on 3rd down & 2/4 on 4th down
The Hornet defense will need to stay aggressive and stop the run. If the Hornets can force Hoke into some 3rd and longs, they will be in a good position to stop their offense. A big key to this game will be limiting the amount of time this defense spends on the field. The Hornets don’t have the size and depth up front to handle 35+ minutes of wear and tear against the large WSU OL. If the Hornets can force 3rd and long, they will need to contain Hoke and make sure he doesn’t create any plays with his feet. The Hornets will have their hands full on defense.

Defense
WSU runs a base 4-3. Their DL has some decent size and their LB’s are led by 2 seniors. Their secondary is filled with underclassmen so it doesn’t seem that they returned much experience from a season ago. This defense did allow a lot of yards against USU and Wyoming did have success throwing the ball, but again those were FBS programs and this defensive unit’s performance is hard to gage considering that. WSU’s defensive statistical leaders:
  • • Morales, LB: 20 tackles, 2.5 TFL’s, 1 sack
    • Okwuonu, S: 19 tackles, 2 TFL’s
    • Webb, LB: 13 tackles, 2 TFL’s
    • Taylor, DE: 9 tackles, 2 TFL’s, 1 sack
    • Neal, LB: 8 tackles, 0.5 TFL’s, 0.5 sacks
    • Epperson, S: 7 tackles
    • James, CB: 6 tackles
    • Gooden, CB: 6 tackles
    • Pugh, CB: 5 tackles
    • Marciel, CB: 5 tackles
The Hornets will have a tough time if they play like they did last week. The Hornet offense will need to be on the same page if they want to get its passing game going. The WSU secondary has allowed movement through the air so the Hornets should be able to get things going if they can find a rhythm. The running game will have a tough time at it as these WSU LB’s are athletic and will fill the holes. The OL is really going to have to get it going for Hilliard and Co. to have success on the ground.

Special Teams
Given the first two opponents for WSU, it’s pretty tough to gage how their special teams are. They have allowed a lot of return yardage on kickoffs and they themselves have some pretty good numbers returning the ball. Given that the Hornets allowed a TD on a kickoff, they should be wary to not allow it to happen this week. WSU’s season stats:
  • • McClain, K: 3/4 FG’s, 4/5 PAT’s
    • Kealamakia, P: 17 punts for 735 yards (43.2 ypp)
    • Parham, KR: 9 returns for 193 yards (21.4 ypr)
    • Collins, KR: 2 returns for 48 yards (24.0 ypr)
    • Marciel, PR: 1 return for 8 yards
    • Kick Coverage: Allowed 11 returns for 245 yards (22.3 ypr)
    • Punt Coverage: Allowed 5 returns for 72 yards (14.4 ypr)

Intangibles
Hoke has yet to throw an INT this season, and the only turnovers so far for WSU are 2 lost fumbles. They take very good care of the ball.
WSU committed 12 penalties for 123 yards compared so they have had issues here. Given that this game is a home game for them, I believe they will clean this up quite a bit.
This is WSU's first home game on some new turf. Emotions should be flying high for them.

This will be a tough game for the Hornets. They will have to have every aspect of their game clicking if they want to come out of Ogden with their first win there. I’m sticking with my homer pick and going with a Hornet win in this one. Given the tough slate in the following weeks, this looks to be the “easiest” of the next three games. Hornet playoff aspirations depend heavily on this team getting it together this week and pulling off the victory. This game will tell everyone of this program is for real or just more of the same old shit we see every year.

Go Hornets!

i see a Hornet victory, not an easy one, but a victory. i thought SUU was going to be a challange, although i was surprised they won by the margin they did. Weber could/should have beaten Wyoming which isn't a bad team. Should be interesting. 3 road trips to start a season is a bitch.
