Week 3: Sac State at Weber State

Methinks we are going to find out this year why Weber fired Sears.

Not too impressed with Peterson lately either.

I was just thinking this. Watching game on BSTV, he looks hesitant, misfiring and just plain awful. What concerns me the most is the coaching staff cannot see it and are continuing on, no adjustments no QB change.

We are barreling towards 1-10 at 150 mph, buckle in boys.

Yup. Offense was non-existent. That's all on coaching against an average at best team like weeber. Nothing but questions after this embarrassment. No QB change, no offensive adjustments, no apparent answers, experienced SR players are MIA. Nothing but questions at this point. This team is in trouble.

Unfortunately, you are spot on.
Did we give Sears a 5yr. after last years Sperbeck's team 7-5 record?

Good news GCM, he only got 3 years to tear the program down.

It is telling that several upperclasssmen left after last year.

I want the players to know that I am NOT blaming them, they did a heck of a job with what they were given.

This was and is on the coaches and if I am the new President, Sears would be in my office Monday morning to describe to me how he plans to rectify this.

horrible showing to a bottom of the Big Sky opponent. So where does that put us?

Hope resident Nelson is indeed paying attention to this probably highest paid coaching staff in the Big Sky.

What was that in Ogden?

Like the program regressed 10 years today.

The Sac State offense crossed the 50 yard line one time today in the late 4th quarter to Weber State?

Seriously? Really? Are we that bad? Oh my.

Idaho State loses 52-0 to Boise State A BSU team that beat UW.
Northern Colorado only scores 3 in a huge defeat to SUU.

Looking like a good thing that we have both these teams in Sacramento coming up.

But will be a big test for us the way we looked today.

And Northern Arizona loses by 64 points at U of Arizona. oh my.

And Cal Poly goes down by 14 at home to Northern Iowa after looking so good at Montana and Arizona State. ???>?

Montana goes down by 10 to Liberty. Poor Montana when they have to play away from home.

Eastern Washington wins by 5 over MSu in a shoot out.

UC Davis playing right now in Hawaii.l Who cares.

Hornetsports release on the 32-14 loss.

Not much to say other than the Hornets were a no show on offense. Without the video it makes it tough to say what went wrong other than Kniffin sucked really bad. Take away Jordan Robinson’s 69 yard TD run and the Hornets only have 40 rush yards on 22 attempts. Not a good look for the OL. The other TD came in garbage time with the game well in hand.

Defense did fine. They held Weber to FGs and kept the Hornets in the game until late. They just wore down as they got absolutely no help from the offense. Sankey broke the Hornet record for tackles in a game with 27…which is cool but really just means he and the defense were on the field way too long. Hornets really held WSU to 25 points which is great by BSC standards. For some stupid reason Sears called a timeout when WSU was killing the clock. WSU then throws for a TD in the closing seconds. Good job Sears.

Special teams was good on coverage, but lacking on returns. Credit WSU for not allowing Hennie to be a factor here.

We’ll be lucky to see 3 wins this season. I won’t have the patience to endure another Moosh-like era and I’m not buying into the “we’re young” excuse. Sears better light a fire under Petersons ass and get some production out of the offense or this will get real ugly. Kniffin is in his 3rd year in this system, he shouldn't be playing this badly.

I am not ready to hit the panic button. Last year we lost to Idaho State and they ended up being pretty good team. Weber has lost to two really good teams. Kniffin needs to get it together. Very bad game. The Hornets are young and Agude was out with an injury as well. They do need to win games. Cassel looked terrible in the UW game. The guy had 2 delay of game penalties with no idea what was going on. Not sure if he is the answer. Robinson can't throw at all. Sac needs to do a little better job recruiting QB. We have not had a HS scholarship QB start for us in a long time.
Kniffin WO
Safron WO
Fleming Transfer
Bethel Thompson Transfer
Smith WO
Vercher Bust Playing at ARC
Not good Hornets.

OH23,

You are a much better person than I am, I was hitting the panic button by 2nd quarter of yesterday's game. We are now 25% of the way through the season and there are way too many issues to be competitive in most games save the UNC game.

Fortunately, I have moved on..............to THE BRIDGE IS OUT DO NOT KEEP GOING THIS DIRECTION !!!

BTW in my opinion, with the team we had last year, we should have ended up 9-3, 8-4 at worst. The UM game last year where we did not even show up, and the ISU game last year appeared to be a foretaste of what was to come.

:twocents:

Look on bright side, we may be able to get more total wins than the Moose during his tenure!

Honestly, I'm not real sure what some of you were expecting this season. This is a VERY young team with a lot of new faces and an inexperienced offense. The second year of a coaching transition always seems to be the toughest, as the players from the old regime move on or are rooted out. Last year was Sperbecks players. This is the first year that Sears has had a chance to recruit. The expectation that an already average program wouldn't suffer a drop off when a HC suddenly departs is kinda of ridiculous.

I'm not saying Sears is great by any means, but you have to give the guy a bit of a chance.

I saw Sac State was picked 7th this year and laughed. This is probably gonna take a few seasons to rebuild, and that's the harsh reality. If you're expecting something else you haven't paid attention to the history of Hornet football.

There where no adjustments that I saw (heard). Young team or not, the O kept doing the same thing when it wasn't working. That is my biggest complaint. Another thing, Sears needs to hire a DC and be full-time HC, apparently over-seeing the OC more.

Its not so much the players as it is the control and academia of the game. UM does quite well with change, with the belief it takes five years to 'build' a team means the incoming HC can't evaluate talent very well. It is also an excuse for a 5yr. contract. I believe you either have it or not and can be determined after 1-2 years.

With 34M+ people and only three FCS schools in the state, also with the lowest admission threshold, this program should be UM, EWU, UNI, Coastal Carolina (?) good, year after year.

So Hornet fans are the five year equivalent of a Cicada?
Coming out every five years to bask in 2 months of mitigated glory at 6-5?!

:thumb:

Maybe we should change the mascot? Seriously. "The Swarmin Cicada's"
Until we fly into the headlights that is Wa-Griz stadium.

Has anyone seen Jihad Vercher going down in Flames at ARC? Ugh...

Time for a QB change... Problem is...

Kniffin - Packet Passer
Cassel - Pocket Passer
Merker - Pocket Passer
Nate Ketteringham - Pocket Passer
Alexis Robinson - Can't throw for sh!t

Not a good stable for Coach Peterson to run our spread offense...

I don't really understand why the bar was lowered due to the coaching change. PH you make some good points and I agree about issues during transition, but Sears didn’t inherit a rebuilding project and no way am I buying the idea that it should take a few years to get to a competitive level (again). Sears inherited a program on solid footing that was competitive in the conference and a roster stocked with talent. There are still a ton of games left to play but there is no excuse for going from a middle of a road program to a dumpster fire in one offseason.

The bigger issues appear to be on offense, specifically at QB, and there were only assistant coaching changes on that side of the ball during Sears’ transition. Peterson had 2 years to find and groom Safron’s successor, and 3 weeks in it isn’t looking too good. Maybe things start to come around and last weeks performance was just an incredibly horrible day, but winning aside, at a minimum we should see improvement throughout the year at QB (and OL).

Where is all the proven talent?
Offense really just 3 returning starters?
Defense 5 retiuring staters

Offense has 6 fresh or soph starting
Defense 6 fresh or soph starting
Next year the team will have 18 returning starters

Sears used a lot of it to parlay a contract extension. Also this season we had WR and RB experience returning. Not sure what happened to Dakin at G. Injury? That would have put 2 returning starters on OL with Togia having some experience before getting hurt last season.

Defense is just missing guys who I though would at least be on the 2 deep (Castillo, Nonu, Armstrong). It's been insinuated that some of these guys were suspended. I don't know what happened. If Sears wants to go young and play the long game for 2-3 years down the line then that's fine. Still not a reason to be ok with a 2-3 win season IMO.

SD,

I guess we saw the roster differently. I saw talent, but an unordinary amount of youth with no clear QB. I was feeling a down year coming as soon as we beat Davis and the season ended, because of the loss of so many key seniors, and the natural attrition that happens when players who were recruited by the old regime move on. I think Sac will be much better as the year progresses and these guys play together. I just didn't have much hope coming into the season, so I guess I'm surprised that everyone else is surprised this team is struggling.

To me, I think the bar always has to be lowered when there is a coaching change, unless you are a premier program that recruits primarily off name recognition, which Sac is not. Just seen it too many times, even with great programs. There seems to be a 1-2 year dip as the new staff gets their foundation built.
