Week 3: Sac State vs Weber State

We need to give some more love to the hornets, when we lose it is non-stop when we win no one says anything

Good game, glad to get the monkey off of Sears' back in beating his former team. And getting a win for the opener. Disappointed only 6500+ showed up, but it was a scorcher.

Safron, had a good game, enough for the win. He wasn't his typical razor sharp self and it appears he still has difficulty at the line as there were needless TO's because the play wasn't ready. Need to stay on the gas, who cares about hurt feelings if we can score 60+ on somebody, do it. Do it again...

Cornish is superman. After lamenting the past few years for lack of a kicking game, he is a breath of fresh air. It proves that a capable kicker can win ballgames, which seems to go against the old administration's belief.

Why dont all teams play hurry up offense all the time? I mean WSU scored at will on that last drive. DL did a great job of motoring around the ends. Pass coverage is still suspect, but they did fine for such a good QB.

Don't think Menlo should be much of a test, but it is Any Given Saturday. I would like to see us control this game for a full 60 minutes. No trash TD before halftime, or injuries. Perhaps have a strong 2-deep in place by substituting frequently and often once in control. Would like to see 10,000+ this week.

Lame duck AD, lame duck President, interim HC, we gotta have a good year to make a statement internally.

Bigskytv is still very unstable and not reliable. Sound works, video doesn't. Video works, but sound doesn't. I'd pay a premium price to have a stable, professionaly produced internet/tv feed.

My $.02.

Great assessment of the game...our weakest area seems to be the secondary...still trying to figure out if it's a technique issue or personnel issue...

From when I am gathering is that Coach Sears likes to be more aggressive up front and will gamble with the DB/WR matchups. You win some you loose some.

Few things I took away from the game...

1 - We have a really good kicking game this year :)
2 - I like our RB depth
3 - The guy selling Ice Cold Lemonades in the stands had an awesome rhyme :)

Go Hornets!!!

The Hornets (2-1) jumped all over Weber State (0-3) early and got out to a 20-0 lead. Weber was able to make it a game and pull within 6 points late in the game, but the Hornets finished strong for a 42-31 win. Weber’s last TD was a garbage time TD. Turnovers were key as the Hornets were +3 in that category. It was good to see some plays being made in key situations.

My thoughts by position:
Offensive Coaching: (A-) A good mix of play calling and a game plan that worked well as the Hornets were able to move the ball on the ground and through the air. The coaches need to find a way to get Carter the ball, 3 touches for 6 yards isn’t going to get it done. Questionable play call on the 4th and short attempt, play seemed like it took too long to develop. Clock awareness needs to get better. Some run plays at the end of the 1st half probably would have not allowed Weber the time to mount a final TD drive of the half. Same thing happened late in the game when the holding call negated a TD. Burn some clock and get the game wrapped up.

Quarterback: (B+) Safron (16/34, 202 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT) didn’t look totally on, but he made some tough throws that the receivers were able to haul in. Safron got away with a few bad throws/decisions but no turnovers were made. Overall a solid performance. Safron (8 carries, 115 yds, 1 TD) had another huge run that got things going early.

Running Backs: (A+) Robinson (17 carries, 130 yds, 2 TD) had a career game and made some key plays that put the game away late. Hopefully this is just the beginning for him. Collectively the running backs did a good job of picking up the blitz.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: (A) Agude (7 recs, 124 yds, 1 TD) had a monster game. Coulter (4 recs, 58 yds) had some timely catches that kept the offense moving. Overall this unit did what it needed to do to keep the offense moving. Carter (2 recs, 4 yds) had a quiet night but others stepped up. Only knock I have is a few drops, and Agude probably should have hauled in another TD that looked to go right through his arms on a diving effort.

Offensive Line: (A) The offensive line had an impressive game. They gave up an early sack but protected Safron well the rest of the way. Weber couldn’t get pressure without the blitz. Most impressive was late in the game when everyone in the stadium knew the Hornets were going to run the ball, and they were still able to open up running lanes. A couple of ill timed holding calls and false starts keep this from an A+.

Defensive Coaching: (C) The Hornet defense started strong, but Weber made adjustments and the Hornet coaches had issues finding a counter punch. The coaches needed to find a way to knock Green out of rhythm and the struggled to do so. The Hornets had no answer for Kehano in the slot. The defense looked to struggle when Weber went into the hurry up.

Defensive Line: (B-) The Hornets controlled the line of scrimmage and forced Weber to be one dimensional on offense as they shut down the run, but they struggled to get pressure against Weber when they were rolling. Totty (5 tak, 1 sack, 2 TFL, 2 QBH) and Cowger (2 tak, 1 sack, 1 TFL, 1 QBH) had a couple sacks and pressured Green late in the game.

Linebackers: (A) Sankey (14 tak, 1.5 TFL) continued his “wreck shop” campaign and led the defense in tackles...again. Fernandez (12 tak, 0.5 TFL, 1 FR) stepped up and had a good game. Great run pursuit, Sankey had a key deflection late.

Secondary: (C+) The secondary got shredded again, but they played just well enough in key situations to keep this game in hand. Their tackling was solid; Crouch (8 tak, 0.5 TFL, 2 BU) had a monster hit late to break up a key pass. The corners still need to get better at playing the ball. The Weber receivers had no issue getting open. Kendall (11 tak, 1 sack, 1 TFL) was all over the place last night. Anyone know why Banks didn’t play last night? The Hornet secondary sure could have used him.

Special Teams: (A-) Cornish (5/5 FG, 3/4 PAT, 5 TB) was the clear star of the night as he set a Hornet record with 5 FGs made. Heath (3 punts, 45.3 ypp, 2 I-20) had a good game. Hennie (4 returns, 23.2 ypr) looks like he is a step away from taking one to the house. The Hornets should have had a blocked punt early and the punt unit also pounced on a turnover. Kickoff coverage was not good (both WSU returners averaged over 30 ypr), a PAT was blocked, and it’s inexcusable that the coaches didn’t anticipate a fake punt late in the game.

Overall: (A) Overall a good game and a gritty performance by this team. The Hornets made plays on both sides of the ball when needed. Special teams had an impact on the game in a positive way. There are a lot of positives to carry forward from this point on.

Game Ball
Offense: Robinson and the Offensive Line.
Defense: Crouch, made a huge hit that broke up a huge catch that ultimately stalled Weber’s last comeback attempt. The happened on the sequence following that fake punt conversion.
Special Teams: Cornish, record setting night.

Go Hornets!!!

The guy had a nice rhyme until the 4th quarter when I wanted a lemonade and he said "8 bucks".... The darn thing was only 5 bucks in the first half.

Point well taken OH.

Watched the game on BS TV, and the energy these guys showed throughout the game was good to see. They played like winners, and responded well to adversity. IMHO a few years ago we would have let a game like this get away from us.

It is clear that the team leaders are stepping up, this process needs to continue but looks like the guys are holding each other accountable.

FWIW, i just read an article on NDSU and the players discuss with the coaches what they are seeing on the field and suggest adjustments to shut the opposing offenses down. On offense the linemen suggested adjustments that allowed them to score often in 2nd half of Iowa State game. If you look at their record it is working.

Congratulations on a good win!

A very good win indeed against a good Weber team. Watched the Weber/ASU game and Weber fought hard and represented the Big Sky well.

Like that coaching attitude of putting leadership in the hands of the players and challenging them to step up. Lots of enthusiasm coming from the coaches. And love the coaching philosophy that the football team is serving the school and not the other way around.

And seeing the marketing efforts grow and grow from the emails I get from the Hornet Club.
Special game ticket packages each game. More sponsorships. Notice on the stadium map that the lower sections of Hornet Stadium on the west side is now just for Sac State students. Hear that the Green Army membership is now at 10,000 strong. Trust that the efforts of the Green Army and the social media importance of marketing to young Hornet fans continues to grow. Would love to see attendance at the Menlo game be higher than the Weber game. With temperatures dropping down it is certainly possible.
Love to see a game soon with nothing but students in those lower sections from endzone to endzone. They get in for free...and of course appreciate that all the Sac State students are paying fees to support athletics.

Looking forward to a big game on Sat. and lots and lots of offense and good defense and every player getting a chance to play.

Go Hornets!!!

See that

Montana went down to NDSU by 12 today
MSU went down by 1 point to EWU
and
northern Arizona went down to South Dakota by 7

All these teams have two losses now. And the three BSC teams ranked in the FCS top 25.

finals so far today

oops.

correction.

EWU is the 4th BSC team in the top 25 and will remain there for sure. Montana and MSU will probably drop down but likely will still be top 25. NAU might drop out of top 25.
