Week 4 - Sac State @ Idaho State

Before we go into predictions.

Does anyone have any updates on “impact” defensive players we supposedly brought in. Have not seen Ngata and Deshawn Lynch touch the field yet. Both of whom were supposed to sore up that D-line for the Hornets this year!

And on the offensive side. Is Jarrell Anderson hurt or is he not even in the rotation anymore?

Hornet social media wished Jarrell Anderson a happy birthday today, so at least he’s still with the program?

Week 4 - Sac State at Idaho State

The Hornets stay on the road and head to Pocatello to start conference play. First up is the Idaho State Bengals (0-2) who are coming into this game off of a bye. ISU started the season with a loss at home to North Dakota, 35-14, then got drubbed at Nevada, 49-10. It’s hard to tell where this Bengal team stands based on those early performances, but this young team is looking like they will have some struggles.

Offensively, the Bengals like to spread the ball out in multiple WR sets and take quick shots to set up the deep ball. They mix in some RPO out of the pistol to keep defenses honest. QB Tyler Vander Waal (29/60, 336 yds, 1 TD, 3 INT) has a good arm but makes some questionable reads. His top targets at WR are Xavier Guillroy (10 rec, 133 yds) and Tanner Conner (5 rec, 78 yds, 1 TD). RBs Malakai Rango (23 car, 106 yds, 1 TD, 3 rec, 21 yds) and Raiden Hunter (18 car, 55 yds, 2 rec, 14 yds) share the load out of the backfield. The young Begnal OL has struggled to control the line of scrimmage and has given up 9 sacks.

The Begal defense has put up some stiff performances early on in both of its games, only to get worn out and over powered both times. It looks like they run a base 4-2 but some of their clips show 3 DL with LBs coming off the edge. Either way the Bengals have struggled a bit, but they did play some tough teams. LBs Connor Wills (20 tkl) and Darius Green (18 tkl, 2.5 TFL) leads the team in tackles. The DL has some size but the ISU defense has yet to record a sack or an INT this season.

ISU’s K Kevin Ryan (1/2 FG, 3/3 PAT) doesn’t have many career attempts. His lone miss on the season came from 34 yards out. The Bengal coverage teams have done well so far this season given the amount of punts (8) on the year.

This is a must win for the Hornets. This is ISU’s Homecoming and they had an additional week to prepare so the Hornets will likely see their best shot. Weird things happen in the Pokey Barn so the Hornets cannot overlook this pesky Bengal team. Having said that, if the Hornets come out focused and take care of business, they should cruise to a road win.

Stingers Up!

Hornetsports Preview

Looking at the 2-deep, it looks like the Hornets will be going with an all FR lineup on the left side of the OL. Hafoka started at LG last week so that is not new, but Garza is getting the start for Stiefel at LT. I saw one of the OL go down at Cal so I'm guessing that's who it was.

I think we'll see Dunniway get the start at QB.

Probably not much changes on the defensive side for this game.

It'd sure be nice if we had press conferences with our HC like I see from P5 programs where they actually, you know, typically provide some sort of information about notable players when they are MIA for unknown reasons.

I'm trying to imagine one of Ryan Day's top recruits at Ohio State not appearing in practice or games and him not being asked about it.
Perhaps Lynch, Ngata, and Anderson are practicing. But since we don't get practice reports or info about them, none of us would know that.....

I’ll say Poco remains a house of Hornet Horrors and ISU connects on a enough deep balls to outscore us 45-42.

😬

Why, BHF? Why should we give that info to our opponents?

What info? That some player isn’t player isn’t playing because of reason x, y, or z?
And they release a 2-deep depth chart every week anyway.

I just heard Ryan Day provide the media an update on OSU’s prized 5 star QB Quinn Ewers and why he’s not ready to play yet. I don’t believe the other B10 programs are going to have some sort of advantage upon hearing that.

The opponents get a lot more info reviewing film. It ain’t no big deal.

It’s not like TT would be reciting his playbook or revealing his weekly game plan.

Flight info for the Idaho State trip is now up on FlightAware.

Q1

Dunniway holding the ball forever and then some (needs to throw the ball away if there’s no open receiver). Taking sacks at the worst time (taking the Hornets out of field goal position).

The QB play continues to be a concern. O-line can only do so much…(and they’re not perfect either). Helping this Idaho State Defense look like a force when they’re far from it

1 min left update: perfect wheel route call from TT. Dunniway delivers a solid throw and wide open field for Marcus Fulcher

30 secs update: special team play continues to be a joke. ANOTHER 99yd TD from opponents special team. They need to be better. Period.

Q2 update:
Another back up QB comes in. Another back up QB torches the Hornets’ secondary. Undisciplined. Bad techniques. You name it

Embarrassing 1st half. IDST is awful.

Sorry folks, this team just doesn’t reflect a well-coached team.

How many pre-snap penalties does this o-line commit every game? How many times do these DB’s get beat deep and never find the ball if they manage to catch up? Safety has deep help and is jogging.

Offense is very predictable at times. They run a lot of the same concepts and all O’Hara seemingly ever looks to do is run.

Special teams are down right pathetic.

And worse yet the Hornets are now allowing freshman to come in and dominant them.

Good, great, grand, wonderful.

Agreed 100%. Defense just getting bullied by a terrible offense with a backup freshman QB. Have yet to generate any meaningful turnovers. Only way Defense gets off the field is if they get lucky and QB is playing below average.

When O’Hara is in, he doesn’t even bother to throw the ball. And when he does, it doesn’t look good. The opposite when Dunniway is in. When someone breathes on him, it’s a sack. Absolute 0 mobility. On top of that, Dunniway has missed some wide open receivers because he locked in on his first option and forces it in there. The worst type of offense is a predictable one and TT has one under his helm at the moment.

Only positive so far in Week 4 is KS, the FG kicker. Solid rebound from a very rough week 3 at Cal. Nailing a 49, 40+ and 30+ yarder to keep your team in the game is how you bounce back! Proud of this kid!
