Week 4: Sac State vs. North Dakota

Every California collegiate football team has attendance issues. With so much to do recreation-wise and the fact that most Californians are apathetic makes for a bad mixture if you are a sports team trying to make a living.

UND will have -0- impact on the game. The reason SDSU was saying UND might not draw well reinforces my statement above that if SDSU was FCS they would have the same attendance figures as Sac State, Cal Poly and UCFE (davis). People in this state will only support teams that are FBS, everything else is just POP Warner.

Now mind you SJSU is averaging 8,000 fans a game and are FBS, so they are the anomoly.

Sacramento is a big military and government town, hence the honor.

Got it. Thanks! Grand Forks is an Air Force town and does the same thing for its service members (active duty, Guard and Reserves). I know, because, I took advantage of the five free tickets that were available for me and my family!

Good luck this weekend, Hornets! We've got to get our defensive house in order like the old days when we built our name and reputation on a strong D.

Also we hired a marketing consultant to help raise money and assist with other athletic department improvements. I think this is more of their thumb print and input more than anything. I do not recall any bobblehead giveaways when I was a student and I don’t ever recall seeing a “free military night” either so I don’t think these were done specifically because UND is coming but more as an improved effort to get butts in seats. Unless it’s homecoming, the only schools that draw well are from Montana or CA.

Looks like the admin is coming up with creative ways to get more people to the games:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As part of this week's Military and Community Service Day, Sacramento State Athletics will provide a voucher for up to two people to all veterans to the Hornet football game against North Dakota. The game will kick off at 6:05 p.m. in Hornet Stadium.

Vouchers can be picked up at the Office of Veteran Affairs (Lassen Hall 3003), the Air Force ROTC office (Yosemite Hall) and the Athletics Marketing Office (Athletics Center). The vouchers are for seats on the East Grandstand.

The game will also feature displays of military vehicles as well as exhibits from the Sacramento County Sheriffs.

On top of the military and community service theme, the first 1,500 fans will receive Herky the Hornet bobbleheads. There will also be several high school marching bands joining the Sacramento State band.

Hi, UND fan here!

Just curious. Is UND considered a less-than-desirable fan draw locally, and is that the reason why this special promo is being used to butts in the seats, or is low attendance a re-occurring issue? I know there was talk at SDSU last week that the fact UND was coming to town would affect ticket numbers in a negative way; we're not used to our team having that kind of negative effect on team's attendance numbers. Maybe it's just that were new to the local fan base and it will take a while for fans to get excited to beat UND. Who knows?

Are you coming to the game? I hope so.

In California, there are many professional and collegiate sports interests. Promotions are just a part of attracting people to games. Don't take it personally.

GO HORNETS!!!!!

Well, one might say that Sac USED TO be a big military town. Reserve bases still exist in Sac, but the two major Air Force bases shut down. Heck, the Navy base in Stockton shut down, too. BRAC is KILLING the military in Cali, and is taking local economies along with it. (Military members and their families spend a LOT of money in the communities where they are stationed.) The Navy bases at Concord and Treasure Island got canned, too, and the libs in SF are trying to kill Fleet Week and destroy anything related to the military. We've lost bases down the I-5/CA-99 corridor and along the seaboard as well, so it's not just Sac, but Sac DID get hit disproportionately hard.

It was to my recollection that we won the cold war; so we closed the bases.

An argument could be made that we didn't so much "win" the Cold War as the Sovs crumbled from within. They put much work into the facade of an expansive military, while leaving little money for training and maintenance, and while the bigwigs siphoned huge $$ for private exclusive dachas while the average person suffered with supply rationing. Like usual throughout our history, we over-reacted to the removal of our only peer power by over-reducing our military strength, thereby killing what is left by holding the remnant to obligations that the larger group couldn't meet. We're down to ten active carriers and still have to support worldwide commitments. We can no longer meet our traditional paradigm of a two-front war, which could easily happen if any two head-of-state thugs like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong Un, and Hugo Chavez ever put their heads together. The "Peace Dividend" is a myth, and always has been.

Sadly, I wish I could be there. But, no, I will be cozy at home nestled up to my TV watching the game on Big SKY TV. UND fans do travel well. There should be a good contingent of UND fans there to represent for me.

Agreed. I was just putting a cap on the absurdity of that statement. Anyways , getting anxious for kickoff. It's going to be a shoot out IMO.

If we win this game, we should start talking about the playoffs. Also, we should stay away from history lessons from talk show radio hosts.
We should never start talking or thinking about playoffs until we get 7 wins.

Bummed. Couldn't attend the game, and now computer problems keeping me from seeing it. Good luck Hornets! Beat the Nameless!

North korea, Iran and Venezuela don't even have a green-water navy.So everything will be alright; also Hugo Chavez is a elected president, not a dictator.

Manuel Noriega was "elected," too. Spin it however you want, Chavez is still a dictator.

Safron is single handedly costing us this game. A fumbled snap on the UND 5 and now a INT inside the redzone. Defense has done a solid job at containing the explosive UND offense.

The story of this game is Saffron single handedly killing us. Two turnovers in the red zone, one on a botched snap before the half and a pick to start the half killed the game. Hornets should have been up 21-14, at least 17-14. He's been brutal all game. They should be running every time on ND.

P.S I wrote that on my phone without seeing what SD wrote, swear to god

TD UND. 21-7 mid 3rd. The way Safron has been playing that should be enough.

TD UND 28-7 late 3rd. Game over.

Big crowd, terrible game. No one in their right mind would want to come back and watch this garbage.

Embarrassment.
