Week 5 - #10 Sac State at Northern Arizona

Just rewatched some of the game. What an absolutely terrible OC.

Absolutely loser behavior to throw out TT’s playbook that took this program to new heights to use his absolutely useless scheme. No element of surprise. Doesn’t put the defense on their toes. Pathetic

16-34 Hornet loss. Hornets struggled through the first half and then costly turnovers in the 3rd quarter ultimately decided the game as the Hornets did not look good against a spirited NAU team. A strip and scoop and score by the NAU defense on a disguised blitz followed up by a poor read by Carson Conklin (17/36, 162 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT) led to more easy points for the Jacks. Another poor decision late resulted in another easy interception for NAU while the game was still in the balance. As poor as Conklin played, the play calling was even worse. The play calling by Coach Fresques was unimaginative and did not put the players in the best position to succeed. NAU constantly brought the blitz and there were no adjustments made to get the ball out of Conklin’s hands quickly. Elijah Tau-Tolliver (16 car, 77 yds, 3 rec, 9 yds) broke a few good runs, but the Hornets largely abandoned the running game in the 3rd quarter.

On defense, the Hornet front held their own and got pressure on the quarterback, however the Hornet secondary struggled to stop the Jacks in critical passing situations. I thought the Hornet defense did fine all things considered, they were just put in too many short yardage situations due to poor quarterback play. The Hornet defense did make stops and had the Hornet offensive execution and play calling not been so horrid, they could have climbed back into the game. Linebacker Nakian Jackson (10 tak, 1 TFL) led the defense in tackles and Josh Cashiola (5 tak, 2.5 TFL, 2 sac) led the team in sacks.

On special teams, Zach Schreiner (3/3 FG, 1/1 PAT) hit a career long 49 yard field goal. The punt team gave up a big return but was able to strip it away and force a turnover before NAU scored a touchdown. A mixed back for the special teams today.

Here are my takeaways from the game:
  • The Hornet offense has no identity without KB on the field. With KB unable to play due to health, this is now just a developmental season for the younger players. We’re just not a contender this season and shouldn’t be ranked in the top 25. I expected more from this roster.
  • Coach Fresques’ play calling does not put these players in a position to succeed and he did not make any adjustments against the blitz in this game. He’s been a coordinator long enough to be better than this. A game like this is unacceptable.
  • Conklin has to get the ball out of his hands faster. The passing plays take too long to develop, he’s got to do a better job of checking down to a hot route. This is on Coach Fresques as well. I don’t recall seeing many screens or plays to the flat against an NAU defense that was aggressive in the box but played off the receivers most of the game.
  • Offensive line had arguably their worst game of the year. As bad as Conklin looked, there were plenty of times where the offensive line didn’t hold up against the rush. They also didn't get a big push on most run plays. A very sluggish and uninspired performance.
  • The horrendous red zone offense came into play yet again. A 1st quarter 1st and goal from the 9 only garnered a field goal. Had the Hornets cashed in on that opportunity, it would have been a 7 point game with 10 minutes to go instead of an 11 point game.
  • Schreiner is putting together another solid season. He should see plenty of opportunities given the Hornet struggles in the red zone.
  • Defensive secondary played pretty soft coverage and NAU was able to pick them apart in critical situations.
  • Defensive front did enough to keep the Hornets in the game. NAU did get some running yards in garbage time, but the Hornets were able to pressure NAU’s quarterback and keep the NAU running game from completely taking over the game.

It’s hard not to be critical of the Hornets given the recent success we’ve had. The Hornets had 4 of the first 5 on the road and have been banged up with injuries and this game was at elevation. The bye week could not have come at a better time. Now the Hornets will have a steep uphill climb if they want to do anything notable this season. Conklin is only a redshirt freshman so there will be mistakes which means this offense will likely sputter against the better defenses on the schedule. There is a lot of room for improvement for the offense in the 2nd half of the season, the key to watch will be if Coach Fresques can get the offense on track.

The other side of the ball has been pretty solid in FCS play and I think this is the best defense since the 2019 season. There is room for improvement, especially in the secondary, but this defense has shown they can keep this team in games. If the defense keeps playing like they have been, there should be plenty of opportunities for wins the rest of the way.

Stingers Up!

This is squarely on Fresques and Thompson. The perceptually most important game in program history and they laid a big pile of shit. All phases.

Both knew KB was made of glass and mentally not capable of making a run through the season. They should have recruited a drop down. Its not like our 1990's 6th grade Fresques playbook is overly complicated.

Fresques should do the honorable thing and find a HS HC position somewhere. Thompson wont fire him and obviously Fresques was not calling the plays during TT's time. He was simply a spotter.

You could tell Tau-Tolliver and Gibson are disgusted, their body language screams I dont agree with what Fresques is doing.

Last year we scraped by on the fear of other teams thinking we would unleash the TT offense against them. Now they know we have a lame duck OC who is unimaginative, uncreative and unable to read a defense.

Orr took the lazy way out an handed the leadership keys to an unprepared group. Should have pulled in a DII HC who was hungry like TT to make a name for themselves or the OC of a team like Incarnate Word or Texas State. Meanwhile, FUCD and their first year HC just beat the #3 team.

With what is presented, this year will be sub .500. Back to a Moosh type of a program.
Yes, I am a doomer. I call it how it is in front of us.

Agree with most of your post GCM, but disagree about the comment on hiring Thompson and Fresques (and any coaches from that Taylor staff). The right move was to retain key parts of the staff from that BSC Title three-peat run. No way you hit the reset button following that unprecedented success.

The hope was the coaches that were promoted would step up to the occasion. 18 games into the new regime and I think Thompson is doing fine as evidence by how his defense is stepping up and how well this coaching staff is recruiting. Fresques is obviously floundering and while the hope is he gets it together, it's more realistic to expect this subpar play calling as the norm. We'll see how the rest of this season plays out and how Thompson handles the shortcomings.

Also of note, Idaho is down to their 3rd string QB.

I have been trying to collect my thoughts. Probably a longer post this week.

Our O-Line got manhandled like when we played FBS teams in the early 2000’s. We haven’t see that happen in a long time.

No adjustments were made to counteract this. We didn’t chip anyone. We didn’t bring in extra blockers. We still called four and five man routes every time. Conklin made some poor decisions, but was not put into a place where he could have possible succeeded. I actually think KB would have likely gotten hurt based on the defensive aggression, even if he were healthy.

We have an off week to figure it out and our WR room needs to get healthier. And we need to install about 200 more plays. We’ve been running the same plays out of the same formations since Week One. NAU’s staff knew the plays we were running before we called them. I have to give them a world of credit. That might have been the most well coached game I’ve seen in the Big Sky in at least 10 years.

Good post and thanks for your insight. I don't think NAU's defense would have been as aggressive on almost every play with KB on the field. They would have lost contain and KB would have broke some runs. Defense's know they can play Conklin aggressive because there is no threat of a run.

Our offense is night and day difference between the 2 quarterbacks, but we know that because we got a glimpse of it last season. I've always believed KB gave this team the best chance to success and we are seeing why. That's not a knock on Conklin but more of an acknowledgement of KB's talent and athleticism.

FUCD QB miles Hastings isn’t a better QB than Carson but his OC calls plays that give him a high % of success.
Watch the Fucd game vs Idaho. Idaho I think had a more talented team w exception laird Harrison RB who is the Aggie mvp in my book.
If we play Idaho / Montana St / Fucd with that weak OC performance this will be a painful season.
I lit up Bobby F on X. I like Bobby but this isn’t the like business. It’s the win business. I like Bobby. But I love my team more than him. If coach Thompson isn’t pissed too then we have a larger problem.
Agree we did right job retaining the staff. We only had an error in our OC. The fact that Bobby was in the TT program working with QB’s is a concern because he learned nothing from the GOAT OC in TT at SAC ST.
How do you apprentice as a former QB seeing his schemes and success. To later scrap all of that and insist on your old BS mediocre play calling?

Coach Thompson needs to start having press conferences because this is pissing me off watching everything that’s been built slipping away. 🤬🤬🤬

If he gave Conklin great play calling w some roll outs, dump passes etc. This would also work. Carson has a sweet side arm throw while rolling out. We just aren’t using him right. Again that is the OC fault.
Give him some quick hit slants or something w quick release. Tight end finding open space, RB rolling out.
Putting this on a talented young freshman that is only doing what he’s told isn’t fair. The OC’s job is build a playbook for his QB’s strengths.
