Week 5: Sac State vs Northern Colorado
Northern Colorado (2-2) comes into this game on a 2 game losing streak. The Bears started out with wins over D2 Western State and an win over recent D1 move up Houston Baptist but have since struggled against BSC opponents Southern Utah (30-3 loss) and Weber State (38-17 loss). Given the downtrodden nature of the UNC program, HC Earnest Collins is on the hot seat as he has been unable to get their program turned around.
UNC operates from a 3 WR set. The Bears have played 2 QBs so far. Jonathan Newsom (29/50, 424 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT) is mobile but has thrown a lot of INTs this season. Jacob Knipp (44/77, 547 yds, 3 TD, 3 INT) has fared slightly better. I’m not sure who will start but Knipp started last week. UNC has a couple of RBs that share the load. Trae Riek (47 car, 273 yds, 3 TD) leads the way with Darius Graham (38 car, 163 yds) getting a lot of touches as well. The QBs spread the ball around as 3 WRs have 10 catches or more. Leading the WRs is Sean Leslie (14 rec, 197 yds, 1 TD) and Stephen Miller (12 rec, 196 yds, 2 TD).

Defensively the Bears base set is a 4-3 led by LB James Riddle (39 tak, 0.5 tfls) and DE Kiefer Morris (20 tak, 2.5 sac, 3.5 tfls). The Bears defense has struggled this season and is giving up over 200 yard of offense on both the ground and in the air on a weekly basis. UNC has gotten to the QB this season, but 7 of their 8 sacks were in weeks 1 and 2.
The Hornet defense will need to have another solid game. The UNC offense is pretty balanced and has been able to move the ball at times; however Weber shut them down last week. The Bears biggest downfall has been turnovers, and that is something the Hornet defense traditionally struggles with (although the Hornets did force 2 TOs last week).
Offensively the Hornets will need to get something going. The offense showed signs of life in the first half last week, but then disappeared. With the injury to Kniffin, the Hornets will get a new look at QB as Cassel will likely take over. UNC gave up almost 250 rushing yards last week. The Hornet run game has the potential to take over this game if the OL can find some consistency.
Any hopes for attaining any kind of success this season hinges on this game. A loss here would be a total embarrassment and ends any hope for the season (and possibly beyond). The Hornets need to show up and take care of business.
Go Hornets!!!
