Week 5: Sac State vs Northern Colorado

Northern Colorado (2-2) comes into this game on a 2 game losing streak. The Bears started out with wins over D2 Western State and an win over recent D1 move up Houston Baptist but have since struggled against BSC opponents Southern Utah (30-3 loss) and Weber State (38-17 loss). Given the downtrodden nature of the UNC program, HC Earnest Collins is on the hot seat as he has been unable to get their program turned around.

UNC operates from a 3 WR set. The Bears have played 2 QBs so far. Jonathan Newsom (29/50, 424 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT) is mobile but has thrown a lot of INTs this season. Jacob Knipp (44/77, 547 yds, 3 TD, 3 INT) has fared slightly better. I’m not sure who will start but Knipp started last week. UNC has a couple of RBs that share the load. Trae Riek (47 car, 273 yds, 3 TD) leads the way with Darius Graham (38 car, 163 yds) getting a lot of touches as well. The QBs spread the ball around as 3 WRs have 10 catches or more. Leading the WRs is Sean Leslie (14 rec, 197 yds, 1 TD) and Stephen Miller (12 rec, 196 yds, 2 TD).

Defensively the Bears base set is a 4-3 led by LB James Riddle (39 tak, 0.5 tfls) and DE Kiefer Morris (20 tak, 2.5 sac, 3.5 tfls). The Bears defense has struggled this season and is giving up over 200 yard of offense on both the ground and in the air on a weekly basis. UNC has gotten to the QB this season, but 7 of their 8 sacks were in weeks 1 and 2.

The Hornet defense will need to have another solid game. The UNC offense is pretty balanced and has been able to move the ball at times; however Weber shut them down last week. The Bears biggest downfall has been turnovers, and that is something the Hornet defense traditionally struggles with (although the Hornets did force 2 TOs last week).

Offensively the Hornets will need to get something going. The offense showed signs of life in the first half last week, but then disappeared. With the injury to Kniffin, the Hornets will get a new look at QB as Cassel will likely take over. UNC gave up almost 250 rushing yards last week. The Hornet run game has the potential to take over this game if the OL can find some consistency.

Any hopes for attaining any kind of success this season hinges on this game. A loss here would be a total embarrassment and ends any hope for the season (and possibly beyond). The Hornets need to show up and take care of business.

Go Hornets!!!

Hornetsports week 5 release is finally up. Only took them until mid week to get it posted.

Kniffin still on the depth chart. No significant changes from last weeks 2 deep.

State Hornet preview lists Kniffin as questionable:
With Sacramento State quarterback Daniel Kniffin questionable for Saturday’s game against the University of Northern Colorado, backup Kolney Cassel had increased reps this week in practice to potentially prepare to start.
Sac State coach Jody Sears said Kniffin will be a game-time decision.

Thanks SD for your continued support of our Hornets. Your write-ups are truly appreciated so please have faith and write on.

Everyone should remember that we are relatively young from top to bottom. New Pres., new AD, new HC, new staff, new starters etc.. Getting mad at this group is like hating on your 5 year old kid. Sure he might do some dopey things but with love and support he can become a hell of a man. And damn, isn't it fun to watch him grow up.

Football is a sloppy sport everywhere. Many uncontrollable factors play in, and nobody has it figured out completely. When anyone gets close, the game changes a little bit and re- sets the universal challenge that all teams face.

I happen to know that our your Hornets are talented, hard working, focused and positive.
Be patient and supportive and I'll bet these boys give us all a thrill before its over.

And if people really want to help, then go to the game Saturday and yell so loud that the 12th man effect will propel us into certain victory.

Stingers UP!

Hope all the Hornets are healthy and ready to try and go 10-0 against Northern Colorado. It has been amazing that the Hornets have come out with a win every time they have faced the Bears. There have been some very close games so much like Sac State experiences with other Big Sky football teams.

Sac State Pride!!

Stingers Up.

27-20 loss. This probably goes down as the most embarrassing loss in our D1 history. Somehow, some way the Hornets found a way to lose when the defense holds the opponent to 6 points. I’m not sure what the spin will be this time, but I can’t wait to hear it. This program has regressed to Moosh-era levels of suck in half a season…hell even Moosh wasn’t incompetent enough to lose to UNC. Undisciplined play that led to stupid penalties, turnovers gifting opponents free points, special teams continues to suck (kick off coverage has sucked for the better part of the last decade) and has never really been addressed. Offensive play calling was predictable and boring. Defense did what they were suppose to do but it didn't matter here.

With that said I have to stomach one more home game this season and then I can find something better to do with my time and money. The Hornets might squeak out a couple more wins this season but the damage is done. Maybe Hornet football can lure me back in but that might be “2-3 years” away. Too many resources are spent on this program to lose to “the worst” BSC program in UNC…well worst until last night, clearly the Hornets is the worst in the BSC now. This program is a joke.

To add insult to injury, you guys HAVE to host this year's Causeway 'Classic'. both our fanbases will be geared up for that one!

i think they invented beer for seasons (yours and ours) like this.

SDH...please go away for two or three years...or longer. Do not waste your time or money on another home game. Have conviction. Do not change your mind. You deserve better. I can't imagine anyone will bother you by trying to lure you back. :kisswink:

Well I’m not going to go on a crusade to tear down the program like you tried to do. How’s that for conviction?

The issues with this team/program are fixable; I just don’t have the patience to endure seasons where we see less than 4 wins a year. A lot has been invested and is still being invested into football to the point that we should be well past that stage.

I "crusaded" for getting rid of a coach who ultimately was removed for committing NCAA violations.
Now, I'm waiting for you to be a man of your word and go away as you promised.

You mean those egregious infractions and violations that resulted in a stiff punishment? A quick search on the NCAA site nets absolutely nada. Whoops.

I didn’t promise shit and I fully reserve the right to lurk around here, if anything to call you out on your nonsensical double standard bs. Now renewing my season tickets for a 7th straight year is another matter. :coffee:

I will focus on the one positive. We see who SHOULD HAVE BEEN the starting QB at the beginning of the season.

Next week the coaches will recycle the same tired plays, practically in the same scripted fashion and the QB who started the season will skip about half the balls into the receivers. But hey, he's been around the program for 3 years. He has not improved in that time, but seniority rules.

Not going to get too steamed about the performance as I don't expect much from this program.

Actually, again, I think the defense did respectable. Other than Nonot being an undisciplined blob, the points scored were by the turnovers.

That first fumble/TD looked like a comedy stunt. It takes practice to look that helpless.

Sure hope when the time comes a national search will be performed. I still say Ed Lamb at SUU would be a perfect candidate.

Overall, the team looks undisciplined, overweight, playing with raw emotion and not smart emotion. Boring offensive playcalling, stupid penalties, basic turnovers, non-existent special teams play.

Yep, I say Sears and Staff look just like the Volek, Moose, et al. teams of the past. At least the Sperbeck teams had a spring to their step.

Kinda strange that Sperbeck, Wanless and Gonzo all left or retired within the same year? If there was any penalties for wrongdoing that was done it has been kept quiet. Wonder what really happened?

Gonzo's retirement was forecasted. I'm sure SDH can explain the sudden departure of the other two
I would say I am entertained by your infatuation with me, but I really just feel sorry for you. You only came here to tear down the program, only spew vitriol, never talk football, and only post when things are going poorly. You were all crickets during last years 7 win season (probably because they were/are Sperbeck recruits). You’re a troll, nothing more. :coffee:

Cassel did well for his first start. It took him a little bit to get going but 28/44 for 294 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs is a solid night. Should have been good enough for the win. It would be sad if he doesn't start the rest of the season. He has the better arm and can stretch a defense vertically (if down the field pass plays are ever called  ).

It is amazing to me how fast we turn on the Hornets offensive coordinator. We have had one of the best offenses in the country the past few years and since he has been here. The hornets lost the best QB in school history stats wise. There is going to be a drop off.bottom line this is a recruiting problem and a retention problem do to the last head coach and staff. The hornets do not have many 4 year seniors or juniors. A lot of growing pains this year is just fact.

Offense
QB Cassel/Kniffen both Juniors
RB Robinson Junior, warren out since first game not much behind him
WR Agude, Harrison who was ineligible last season and Hennie sophomore
TE Sander, Soph and McGill true freshman
OLine Hansen Sr great
Aiono Soph, Viveiros Sr first time starter, Meza Freshman Bade Soph and former TE from last year.

Need another go to RB and O Line needs experience and when you use the running ability Safron had you lose a lot. All those bad calls he made good calls are gone.

Defense
D-Line
Sorenson Soph, Johnson freshman, Mazza senior and hurt, O'Binna freshman, Hayes senior great
LB Sankey Senior, Pearson true freshman, Meteer Soph
Safety Scott Anderson true freshman, Banks Freshmen, crouch Jr. But already missed two games, Wallace, freshman
Armstrong is back junior
Jenkins Soph

If all of these young guys are playing offense and defense you can only imagine how young the guys running down on the crappy cover units are.

This is a bad football team right now because they make really bad mistakes right now. This conference is so close, I am willing to give them time. I believe they can win any game, but sadly I believe they can lose any game.

Players need to make plays, bottom line.
