Week 6 - Portland State - Homecoming

Interesting homecoming game coming up Oct 8, 6 pm, vs the Vikings. 2-3 (1-1 BSC) PSU Vikings are a question mark team. Struggling with turnovers & defensive letdowns, like the Wildcats, the Vikings have beaten Idaho St. but lost to SUU in Cedar City so far in the BSC. They are win-less on the road but could be a dangerous opponent to the Wildcats. Latest "Power Rankings" (from Nuanez) have Weber St @ 8th; Portland St @ 10th.

Will this be the breakout game that HC Jay Hill desires, saying the Wildcats need to finish out their recent strong starts by holding strong thru the second half of each game? Hopefully the bye week helped to heal some injuries & renew the team's goal for a successful season. Wildcats 31 - Vikings 21 :thumb:

(Preseason I penciled in a L on this - hope this is my 1st incorrect preseason guess.)

Ok so it is game week. WSU and Hill's saving grace this season maybe the weakness of the Little Sky Conference. So that no one gets ahead of their skis, realize WSU's two wins this year are against 2 foes that combined, have 1 win for the season which wasn't even against a D1 school. Portland St is not much better, their win comes against the kity cats from ISU. Weber wins big again this week against Portland St. Let's stop the nonsense talk that the Wildcats are so injured and banged up? Outside a stud linebacker like 8#, its not like WSU is down because of a bunch of all conference players. Players get injured in football, man down, next man up, thats what good football programs do. Wildcats are fortunate that they haven't lost any key offensive lineman this year. Once one of the starting five on the offensive line goes down there is a huge drop off. The fact is the recruiting classes since Jay Hill and coaches have arrived for the most part have been a bust! Besides a Punter, Kicker, Long Snapper and a couple of DE's the rest of the team are Jr. and Sr's. It's not like the team was full of 1 star or higher recruits when Hill arrived. If Hill and the staff are such great recruiters their last three classes should of been able to step right in. The coaching staff keeps trying to push their new recruits but the fact is you can't shine meatballs. Look at the QB position, the most important position on the team and the last three recruiting classes have been a major bust, thus Clark continues to go uncontested. I could continue but no need. Looking for the Senior Class to get it's 3rd win in a row at homecoming this week! Go Cats! Thank goodness basketball practice has begun and the start of the season is just around the corner! :willybs:

Hoping we see Wilkes 13# healthy and back on Kickoff returns as the Cats deep man as well as at RB position. Also hoping to see ZACH SMITH playing a lot more this week at the RB position as well. Smith can actually catch the ball out of the back field instead of dropping 2 TD throws this season like Garrett. Congrats Zach on averaging 5.5 yards a carry for the season when given the rock!

NCAA football actually if you saw last night Sacramento state beat Montana State so the two teams have two wins although I am with you both teams aren't very good.

Thank you for the call out, my mistake, they did not update the Little Sky Conference Website rankings today. I stand corrected. Wow, Montana State lost to SAC St? amazing how weak the conference is this year. Based on the weakness of the conference and the key home games in ogden this year I am starting to like the chances of the Wildcats to break 500.

Wow with fans like ncaa who needs enemies. Just remind me to always stay on your good side! LOL

We all had high hopes for Weber State Football this season. So far Weber has won the games they were supposed to and dropped those they were suppose to lose. Is Weber State a good program? Not right now. Do they have potential. Yes, they do. This team can get a lot better. There is talent. I don't know how you can say the recruiting classes have been an absolute bust. As good as advertised? No! But, an absolute bust? No. It is a process. I feel the Cats can only get better. The offense has been a huge surprise actually, whereas, the defense a total let down. But, we lost virtually every DE from last season, one to the offensive line and our stud secondary coach.

As for this week, I wouldn't say that this game will be a cake walk. I think it will be a tough game and I hope for a Wildcat victory, but in this conference, from one week to the next, anything is possible. I had a feeling that MSU would drop a close one to Sac. MSU isn't the team they once were. I don't understand firing a good coach for the unknown. Especially when that coach kept that program competitive and winning. But that tells us one thing, anyone is beatable at anytime. Got to bring it every week.

Weber is going to have to stop the run first and foremost against PSU. The Vikings had 531 yards rushing against ISU. PSU only threw the ball 5 times all game. If WSU can't stop the run its going to be a very long afternoon.

Bad news on Wilkes, 13#, high ankle sprain, not recovering as hoped, WSU looking to medial shirt him this year which is great news for the future of the program and we wish him a healthy recovery for big 13! Hoping this means we see more of Zach 4# carrying the ball more. Garrett 26# looks like he could use the competition in the backfield if Hill will let Zach out of his dog house. Its a long season and RB's that are taking as many reps as Garrett with need a breathier from time to time to make it through the entire season.

Hopefully Weber can stop the run. Weber has the #1 Pass defense in the Big Sky but we are 2nd to last in run defense. Hopefully that was worked on over the bye.

I'm thinking offensive shootout, neither team is known for their defense so we could see a lot of points.

We have the best pass defense because if you can run, why pass? Our pass defense isn't that great. Teams have been able to pass at will when they need to. Not being a turd, but if you watched the UC Davis and USD games you would have seen how bad our pass defense is. It isn't that good. It looks good because teams are rushing for over 200 yards against the Cats. If you can run, why pass?

I'm hopeful that our defense continues to improve. I feel our secondary will only get better each game. Our line desperately needs to put more pressure on the QB and most importantly, we need to tackle a lot better. Weber is getting great initial contact but isn't tackling after making contact.

So...uh...what happened to Jared Afalava? Just saw the depth chart and checked the roster, and he is no longer on either. Terrible time to quit. I really hope he is hanging up his cleats due to other reasons and isn't quitting.

We started the season with the scariest LB crew in the Sky and now?
Emmett Tela is out for the season.
Alema Key is out for the season.
Copper Clark I believe is out.
Jared Afalava I believe has hung up his cleats.

Legrand Toia is being backed up by a safety in Justus Brown, which might work out in the long run, but Justus isn't big enough to play MLB, unless he has put on 15-20lbs in the last couple months. Tre'von Johnson is being backed up by a true freshman DL, and Landon Stice is being backed up by a freshman fresh back from his mission. Interesting mixing and matching. Maybe this is a great set up. I hope so.

Other Defensive Adjustments:
At DE, looks like Adam Lewis is no longer starting or even in the 2 Deep. 3 Freshmen and Cardon Malan are the guys on the 2 deep. Miller is now starting over Lopez at SS, and freshman Kevin Smith is on the two deep at FS. A lot of underclassmen playing on defense.

And the Athletic Department will remain silent through it all.

Good call out and telling like it is on the pass defense. WHY PASS when you can run for 400 plus yards against the WSU defense. If the defense is going to continue to give up so many points per game the offense will have to step up BIG time this year and start scoring some serious points. Let's face it last season the defense was lights out in many of the games last year so WSU could get wins by relying on the defense to actually score points to win a game. This year the offense has to score 30 plus every game just to keep them in the game. Please dont mention scoring 49 against USD, they gave WSU 21 points the first 7 minutes of the game. :dunce:

Afalava either failed a drug test or grades. Kid wasnt doing anything positive off of the field at all. I also think Adam Lewis may be hurt from how it looked 2 weeks ago. We are going to get into a lot of trouble unless these kids step up but regardless being this beat up in this part of the season.... Itll be hard to make a run at 6-8 wins if we cant keep guys healthy....

More exaggeration from ncaa

Utah State has so far been the only team to run for 400 plus yards, since then the Wildcat rush defense has gotten better.

South Dakota- 310
Sacramento State- 145
UC Davis- 98

You could say that it is based on the level of opposition, but that shouldnt matter if our defense is as bad as you and some others claim it to be. Weber is 6th in overall defense, that means that there are 7 teams that are worse than us. Including #2 in the nation Eastern Washington.

Me, I see an injured and young defense that needs to learn and step up and I believe that as the season progresses that is what will happen.

And no South Dakota didn't give us 21 points, Weber's defense did. :dunce: :dunce: :dunce:

The stupidest thing about all this negative talk is that Weber is sitting at 2-2. Exactly where most fans on this dumb site predicted Weber would be. Weber is a few made plays away from being 3-1 and our next two are at home against less than stellar opposition. I'm not happy that our defense has blown a couple large leads, but there is not one game left on our schedule that is unwinnable, And I'm not yet willing to write the season off due to early struggles.

:+1:

ncaa is like the Donald. He thinks that if he lies loud enough and long enough, it will somehow become true.

Just take what he says with a grain of salt. He lives in his own little made up world.

I still wish #justweber would do more than just the #bareminimum and perhaps do a weekly coaches show like this for football and basketball.

Interesting. Coach is taking them to Temple Square and Hogle Zoo on the Friday before the game. Cookies, Coolaid, and cotton candy, sounds about right to me. Even better, a full day at altitude. I guess they are young and can take all of that. In the highlights from the ISU game, it looked like they have some real speed at running back. Either that or ISU is freakishly slow at the DB positions.

To me, PSU looks like a young, but talented team. We need to limit our mistakes and not hand them any extra confidence. :twocents:
