Week 6 - Portland State - Homecoming

WSU defensively is near perfect in the RED ZONE this season. Opposing teams have scored 14 out 15 attempts in the RED ZONE. Sorry, I don't want to exaggerate about the defense, WSU is not perfect they are only 93% for the record in giving up points to opposing teams in the RED ZONE. The defense has no problem with the rush either, WSU has only given up 981 yards rushing in four games and Sac State and UC Davis are passing teams. No need to worry about the WSU defense keeping the oppsosing team out of the end zone they are "young and improving" and everyone can rest easy against Portland State running the ball this week. Which is how this discussion started.

Just to remind everyone who comes onto this forum, we do not all have the same opinion. That is what makes this a FORUM. However, we do need to remember to be respectful. Regrettably feelings do get hurt and there are going to be numerous times where we don't agree. Yet, that doesn't mean we can start belittling others. Please remember to be respectful, but also remember that the best part of this forum is the right and opportunity to post ones opinion.

As for defense, like Wildcat, I feel it is improving. This week will tell us how much our defense has or hasn't improved. We are playing a team who can run the ball very well and when need, can pass for yards. Nonetheless, I really like the move of Brown from Safety to Linebacker. Sure he needs to bulk up a bit, but he has good speed for that position and that is what Tre'von was before becoming a Linebacker. On the ends, well, these are the guys playing the best ball right now at that position. From game 1 to 4 I saw improvement on our ends. Are they where they need to be? NO! But they are improving. I'm worried about our secondary. They are just not getting the job done. We have virtually the same guys as last year and they aren't getting it done. That tells me that the issue isn't player related but coaching. Snowden is a great example of someone who has gone backwards and that could be attributed to coaching. Finally, if Afalava wasn't being a good teammate or making grades, then it is better for the platoon and team that he is gone. He is a heck of a player, but.

Two big factors in the secondary this season. WSU lost probably one of the top DB coach's in the country from last season. Former NFL player and outstanding Coach. Second factor is Devonte graduated. He was truly a shutdown corner and they could put him out on an island by himself without any help and allow for the extra safety to come down in the box and have an extra body. Devonte is now in the NFL. Because WSU no longer has a shutdown corner they have to keep the extra safety over the top to help out thus another attribute to the weak run defense.

SO for homecoming I think our guys will come out ready to play as i see this as a huge game for us (obviously homecoming) but to build momentum and build off 2 straight wins. Unfortunately i don't think that we will get the win. Our receiving core has not been helping Clark out much at all with our bright spot being the tight ends but they cant make all the plays. Lets see if Zach Smith is able to help out Garrett in the backfield so he doesnt get to worn down. I also dont think our defense will be able to contain there talented backfield all night long. This portland state team may be 1-3 but they are a VERY good team. PSU 31-Cats27 (hoping i am completely wrong and we move to 3-2)

Here is the link to the weekly Portland St Coaches show: http://www.goviks.com/news/2016/10/4/viking-football-with-bruce-barnum-episode-7.aspx
I still wish #justweber would do more than just the #bareminimum and perhaps do a weekly coaches show like this for football and basketball.
Interesting. Coach is taking them to Temple Square and Hogle Zoo on the Friday before the game. Cookies, Coolaid, and cotton candy, sounds about right to me. Even better, a full day at altitude. I guess they are young and can take all of that. In the highlights from the ISU game, it looked like they have some real speed at running back. Either that or ISU is freakishly slow at the DB positions.

To me, PSU looks like a young, but talented team. We need to limit our mistakes and not hand them any extra confidence. :twocents:

Barnum is a different dude. He got all kinds of hell from SUU fans for comparing Cedar City to Whoville.

What did Zach Smith do to get into the dog house so bad? To me, he is a really good running back. He hits the holes and doesn't dance around. Also, and most importantly, he has good hands. Don't get me wrong, I really like Treshawn and appreciate all that he has done, but he needs help. He is carrying way to much of the load and getting worn down. You can see that in games. By the 4th quarter he just doesn't have that extra punch needed to close out games.

Keys to the game:

1. Stop the run. Weber has to limit PSU's running offense.

2. Force PSU into a one-dimensional passing team by limiting the run, this can cause TOs in the air.

3. Balanced unpredictable offense. Use more motion and spread schemes.

4. Time of possession needs to equal scores not just holding onto the ball.

Time to stop blaming defensive injuries on lack of production. Our defense has been without three starters since week 1. Man up and go forward.

Just saw that PSU did not complete a single pass last week vs ISU, and only attempted 5. They rushed the ball 58 times. :yikes:

I am with you brau on Zach Smith getting some play time, I have been on that band wagon for a few games, welcome to the chuck wagon.

But your comments on tight ends being the bright spot. WSU has tight ends that have dropped more passes than they have caught this season. 87 gets a lot balls his way but has average two drops per game especially in critical situations.

Looks like 8# WSU's stud linebacker is back in the lineup, I think??? WSU has him listed as the defensive captain this game? Hope he is back for good, WSU is desperate on the rush, RANKING 12th in the big sky on rush defense.

Final Wrap up of the WSU Portland State Game

POSITIVES:
-OFFENSIVE LINE BLOWING HOLES from Tackle to tackle---WSU offensive line coach pay him more money!
-Finally after week 5 starting 30# Hoskins as DB about time the coaches woke up, he shut them down tonight then lead the team as the conductor of the school fight song after the game! Future Leader of the team!
-Clarke can run like Forest Gump, but he throws like GUMP. 10 yards passing in the first half? 18 Yards by the 3rd Quarter.
-Defense looked well rested--Burton 7# laying some serious wood.
-Secondary didn't get beat deep this game
-Corn Dog concessionare in the North end zone is dog gone good
-The Weather and the sun set before half time
-The Student body section was rockin tonight
-Got to see the Future Heismann Trophy winner in Kuresa 7# for PSU, according to KJZZ announcers, just because YBU drops him from the program and he goes to the big sky doesn't mean he is any good?
-Thank god the little sky is a little weak this year.
-Head Coach of PSU, Biggest and Best Beer Gut in the head coaching ranks for D1 football
-Our National Player of the Week last week is 4-8 in FG's this year?
-Blitz twice this game on defense instead of once! Maybe 3 times next week.
-58 LB, Great Game! WAY TO STEP UP big time!
-Punter, still killing it!

NEGATIVES:
-Really need a new offensive coordinator, pathetic play calling, execution, and player selection, same old players accept for 87# the past three years doing nothing.
-Clark cannot throw the deep ball with any accuracy, 7 INT's to 6 TD's passes for the senior this season, Just the Facts! They cut you in the NFL with those ratios
-Clark continues to throw extremely late on his progressions and reads
-Never did see Zack 4# at RB even when 26 was out of the game hurt, Give it up Hill and Free Zach 4# from the dog house. Does WSU have any running backs that can put up 100 plus rushing against the PAC 12 like he did against A-STATE
-Enough on DENBY 3# as a runner, he has negative yardage for the season on 8 or 9 rushing plays how bad does he have to be as a rusher until Hill and Fessi stop giving him the ball on the jet or pitch sweep. he did the same exact thing all last season.
-Enough with DENBY 3# as a punt returner. PSU was 15 yards from him on coverage and he still made a fair catch. If he plays the ball he runs for 15 yards before he sees a white jersey?
-87 nice touch down catch, but you still had two drops tonight especially on the slant. Common Man, Your the best TE in FCS football but please stop the drops.
- WSU WR's were MIA the whole game, zip for Drew 6. How do you play an entire game and do nothing? The announcers even mentioned that the receivers could not get open during the game. And Clark had all time!
-Defense looked rested, Offense looked rusted, not my words the words of the announcers.
-WSU Running backs doing great Job in hitting wide open gapping holes by the O-Line but could you just break a tackle once in a while, please. Your one hit wonders, get hit once and go to the ground, your not WR's.
-Really, RB 31 sees the field and gets the ball before Zach 4#, WTF is that?
-3rd Down and 2 screen pass to DENBY with two TE as blockers and he can't fall forward and get the 1st?
-Pooler 24# carries the load and no Zach4#?
-35 still doing kickoff returns. Great WSU has the Biggest and slowest Return Man in D1
-KJZZ Dave Fox and Alema as football announcers, are you serious?
-Please stop throwing to the TE's deep, they are to slow and it takes way to long for them to get deep. Clark ate a burrito in the pocket waiting for 33 to clear deep.
-33# the TE for WSU runs a 5.5 40 yard and WSU is sending him on Vert routes.
-Denby as a receiver lines up offsides for the penalty. Common Man

21-17 prediction final 14-10, PSU just ran the clock to hard.

It is 3-8 on FG´s....Rounds up to 38% efficiency. That is not good no matter how you look at it. The rest of this season, every point will matter. I have to question the reasoning behind it.
