Week 6: Sac State @ Northern Colorado

i just looked at the stats...oh my.

the winning team has 177 yards rushing, ZERO passing on no attempts? what in the name of Woody Hayes is going on!
oh, the losing team had 43 rushing, 29 passing, 7 fumbles (2 lost).

12 first downs total.

sounds like a monsoon. i saw a replay of a play and i swear i saw Giligan and the Skipper trying to steer the Minnow in the background.

they were among the 1187 hardy souls at the game.
 
Wow. I didn't get to see the game, but I can't wait to see some highlights. How often do you get to set a record that can never be broken?

What makes it more humorous is that those goofballs who do the "leading off" column at the Bee had the poll question "by how many touchdowns will Davis beat Humboldt? One, two, three, four or more". Anyone with a modicum of FCS knowledge saw this coming a mile away.
 
Great to leave Greeley with the win! Smart game plan to keep risks at a minimum and to take advantage of UNC's mistakes in those conditions. I checked the weather on Friday and they had predicted clear in the 60s for Greeley. The coaches must have decided to change the game plan Saturday morning when the weather changed. As we saw in the Causeway last year that type of weather is the great equalizer and anything can happen. The radio crew said they were using a lot of backups to give some starters a extra week going into the bye to heal up. Hopefully we will be at full strength for Eastern Washington and for the stretch run. Great win for Humboldt over davis last night! If they can't get a win vs UTSA at home this week they could end up 1-10!
They are more to be pitied than laughed at, but it's fun to laugh at them anyway!

Rain fell steadily throughout the day and temperatures were in the 40s with wind chill dipping into the mid-30s and northwest winds ripping above 20 miles per hour.

I'm glad I missed this one. Sounds like I would have smashed my keyboard through my monitor. Good to see Sperbeck finally get a win in terrible weather. I haven't read or seen anything other than the hornetsports article at this point, but it sure sounds like we would have lost this one has UNC not been in such terrible shape this season. 0 pass attempts? :| Without looking into it too much as of yet, looks like nothing was learned from last years Causeway. :?
 
SD: We actually DID have a pass attempt. It was completed for a touchdown. Unfortunately, it doesn't show up in the stats because it was wiped out by a possibly bogus offensive PI call.

It's not that big a deal, SD. One expects fewer passes in weather like that. It's not unprecedented. Understanding the difference in eras, one need only look back to 1950, the year of the first big merger in NFL history. Responding to whining charges of being a pass and trap only team after completely dismantling the 1949 NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles in the first game of the year, the Cleveland Browns beat them the second time around without throwing a single pass. Their running game was just that much better than the Eagles' defense. While the weather wasn't a factor in THAT game, one could just say that our running game was just that much better than the Bears defense. We won't see a recurrence next week because the weather will be different. We claim the win and move on.
 
Just read the SacStateSports articles and I did see the one attempt that was wiped out. I just get the feeling Sperbeck stuck his head in the sand with regard to play calling and hoped the team wouldn't sh!t the bed. It sounds like that is how it went and it also sounds like we dodged an embarrassing bullet this past week. Kudos to the D for keeping a shutout (thanks in large part to UNC ineptitude). :shock:

Speakin of crapping the bed was BigSkytv, I couldn't get it to work the entire game.
 
SD, the field was so wet, the guys on the broadcast said that it wasn't any good even changing footballs out. It was bad enough snapping under center. Can you imagine trying to throw? I think they learned a great deal from Causeway last year. The coaches, instead of sticking with whatever gameplan they had coming in, saw the weather and made adjustments. If you read Sperbeck's quote, I think he summed it up nicely. Also, Jason and Steve said on air that the wind was about 30mph sustained. Good call on running all day and a dub is a dub!

Hendershot actually caught a TD pass but it was called back on an offensive PI call (he "pushed" off). The attempt wasnt counted as there was a penalty. I believe it was a 20 yarder to the back of the end zone.

I got it to work, however, the weather in Greeley prevented any video of the game. I got three second views and then the screen would go black. I ended up streaming 93.1.
 
ya 93.1 was the best way to go. I found it very amusing when the announcers were talking about the 9 ppl in the grandstands lol
 
At one point didn't they say one side of the stands was completely empty? I'm not trying to go all "Montana-like" superiority, but UNC is absolutely terrible. Foolerton and the rest of the BSC kicks themselves for including them, I'm sure.

Now they've got UCD, CP, UND and SUU coming our way to form a 13-team cluster F$#%. UNC should've never been invited and instead CP and UCD deserved the call.

We would've had a 10-team league with strong schools and a large California footprint. And if the Big Sky ever desired to go FBS they would've been able to make a much better case for it.

Anyways, just letting my mind drift on our bye week...
 
Recap/Thoughts

I was out of town and missed everything there is to know about the ugly 14-0 win in Greeley this past week. The game was played in a windy, cold, and wet storm which left its impact on the outcome of the game. Fortunately for the Hornets UNC has no running game to speak of and the Hornet defense kept the Bears off the scoreboard in their first shutout since ‘94. The Hornets now head into the much needed bye week with a 3-3 record and 2-2 in the BSC. It’s not great as I think we all expected a little better record at this point but it could be a lot worse.

Offense
The Hornets didn’t have any official passing attempts as it was a full on ground and pound game given the weather situation. The lone pass attempt was a TD negated due to an offensive pass interference. Fortunately the Hornets never trailed and a passing attack wasn’t needed. Game stats:
  • • Fleming: 0 of 0 for 0 yards, 59 rushing yards on 13 carries, 1 TD
    • Hilliard: 31 carries for 113 yards
    • Croxdale: 4 carries for 12 yards
    • McCowan: 3 carries for 0 yards
    • Receivers: Nothing
    • OL: Pounded away at UNC enough to win the game
    • TOP: 30:58
I question the fact that there were not any passing attempts but Sperbeck’s strategy in the rain won the game…this time. No doubt UNC had everybody in the box so I am sure open running lanes were hard to come by. The OL did their job and the Hornet offense was able to eek out a TD. TOP was about even so it’s hard for me to say that the Hornets were dominate enough to control the game as it sounded like UNC has a couple of opportunities to put up some points. The Hornets did put the ball on the ground 3 times and lost it twice. Ugly game, but at least it is a win.

Defense
The Hornet defense won this game. UNC is a pass first attack so their ability to move the ball through the air was no doubt heavily impacted. UNC did have a couple of FG attempts so they were able to get into FG range, fortunately they were unable to come up with any points. McMahon made a TD saving tackle which turned out to be a huge play and the defense was able to score on a fumble to put the game away midway through the second half. Hats off to the defense as they stood tall, held an inept offense in check and won the game for this program.
  • • Rushing Allowed: 43 yards on 49 attempts (0.9 ypr)
    • Passing Allowed: 3/13 for 29 yards
    • Davis: 10 tackles, 2.5 TFL’s
    • Badger: 10 tackles
    • Agaiava: 7 tackles, 1 TFL
    • McMahon: 6 tackles, 0.5 TFL’s
    • Odiase: 6 tackles, 1 F-FUM that sealed the game
    • Nash: 5 tackles, 2 TFL’s, 1 sack
    • Coleman: 2 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 TD on a FUM
    • Larche: 3 tackles
    • Wilkins: 4 tackles, 1 TFL
    • Lawrence: 4 tackles, 0.5 TFL’s
    • Bloomfield: 3 tackles, 1.5 TFL’s
    • Fernandez: 3 tackles
    • Monson: 3 tackles, 1 TFL
    • Castro/Cowger: 2 tackles and 1 TFL each
The defense did what they needed to do and they were the reason for the win this week. It looks like UNC did have a couple of drives but this defense was able to make stops and keep UNC from scoring. UNC fumbles 7 times but the Hornets only recovered 2 of them. I’m not sure what the fumble situations were but if this defense gets a couple more of those loose balls, maybe the game isn’t as close as it was. Todd Davis pulled down the BSC Defensive POTW honors. He has been solid all season so this is well deserved.

Special Teams
Another weird special teams day. The Hornets gave up a blocked punt and it looks like Gunn had a 40 yard kick return. Heath’s numbers aren’t good but he did pin UNC inside the 5 which led to the defensive score. No FG attempts were taken but Diniz2 did hit his 2 PAT attempts in the horrible weather.
  • • Heath: 7 punts for a 34.6 ypp avg. 1 blocked punt, 1 Inside 20, 1 TB
    • Kick Coverage: Allowed 71 yards on 3 returns (23.7 ypr)
    • Punt Coverage: Allowed 1 returns for 19 yards
    • Diniz: 2/2 PAT’s
    • Hendershott: 1 kr for 10 yards
    • Monson: 0 punt returns, thank God given what happened in his last attempt to field a punt in a monsoon.
Mistakes were made in the ST area but UNC wasn’t able to capitalize. These units will have 2 weeks to work on cleaning things up.

Injuries
Deadder and Reed didn’t play due to injuries. Anyone get banged up this week? With the bye this week, hopefully the players can see some rest and get those bumps and bruises healed up.

What an ugly game, but a win is a win. Time to rest up for a week then go back to work and get ready for a desperate EWU team that will be heading to Hornet Stadium.
