Week 7: Sac State at Northern Colorado

Between all the fall weddings the wifey and I have been invited to and work stuff I haven’t had the time to catch as much Hornet football as I would like nor time during the week for write ups…and I am getting close to the “meh” preview given the disappointment this season has entailed. Besides there hasn’t been much action on these boards anyways so figured not many people would notice if I pared it back.

Northern Colorado has a solid defense that will take the ball away. 5 Turnivers vs NAU 4 against UNLV. 13 INTs all together. We better be careful in throwing the ball up into double coverage. I know Agude comes down with a lot but seems like UNC has some guys that can attack the ball.
UNC offense doesn't seem to be very good. They are not scoring a lot and run the ball well. Hornets need to stop the run.
We can not give up any big plays in the kicking game. Be sound and a no-factor and you get an A.

interesting to look at other Big Sky fan boards. Every fan of every team is looking just for an average defense in order to be successful. Suppose the best defense in the Big Sky and many conferences these days is a great offense that puts up more points then the opposing offense.

Hope you're having a good Fall SD but please don't think we don't miss your insights. Please resume your excellent write-ups ASAP. Thank you for all you have done to support Hornet Football.
Go Hornets!

Hope it isn't raining. That was a pitiful game a few years ago.

We always seem to play down to these guys level.

I think the problem in that game was a combo of the wind and rain. Wasn't that the game without any passes?

Whoever is named HC for next season should hire away Larry Kerr from UNC to serve as DC. It worked on the offensive side of the ball when we hired away Peterson from SUU. Maybe it could work for defense?

I wish the coaches read this board. I mentioned Larry Kerr last season. He was HC at LA Valley College then. Hopefully he the hornet AD hires him as HC if Sears doesn't pan outl

Edit: The new HC at LAVC is also a defensive coach. Juan Navarro took over after being the DC at LA Pierce College. Before that, he was LBs and DL coach at FIU. I think he has the background to be the next hornet DC.

Hopefully the Hornets defense can play a half way decent game and, if the offense keeps clicking, we should be able to win this one - could be tight tho. Northern Colorado will be pumped after knocking off NAU and think they can do it to us too.

Halftime. 20-17 Hornets
Poor special teams play-a blocked extra point was 1 yd from being 2 pts for NC, a kickoff returned for a TD
Defense left middle of field open early and QB got a TD
Offense: 1 pick and 1 fumble. We are fortunate to be up by 3.

I'm really questioning the coaching at the end of this game. Some of the decisions are baffling. 3rd and 1, up 13 with 5 mins to go and you bunch up and try and smash up the middle-- no gain. They get the stop on the goaline, and instead of just pushing forward and try to get room to punt and run out the clock, they NOW get aggressive and it results in a safety....

So this was one of those where we had the game under control going into the fourth quarter, tried to hand it to UNC on a silver platter, but they just couldn't take it?

Should have been in more control throughout, silly turnovers, missed xtra points. Up 13 late with 5 mins to go and the ball and try to run up gut. Punt and get a goalline stand with two minutes to go that should have been ballgame. Backed up on own goalline, NC with no timeouts, Sac goes shotgun and runs three weird plays, including a pass, gives up a safety. NC gets ball right back and scores a TD with a minute to go. If they get the onside kick they most likely go on to win. Lack of situational understanding, imho
