Week 7: Sac State vs Northern Arizona

Ace back dive on 2nd and 16?!? What is he THINKING?!? If you want to run the ball that far behind the 8 ball, it's gotta be stretch or toss sweep.

Let's face it. This is the Big Sky Conference, and that means horrible officiating. They missed a TON of calls in the first half, and a holding penalty on NAU #18 (obvious hand full of cloth from the Sac defender's backside). But given all of the above, I don't think it would have mattered much if they'd gotten everything right. We had NAU right where we wanted them, and we let them off the hook.

Thanks for reminding me of this. I forgot to mention it in my rant and it's another great example of not trying to move the chains and just hoping to run the clock down. First and 20 and you know NAU is desperately trying to get a stop to keep their momentum going and you ground the ball up the middle? I think even third and long was a called QB draw.

It sounds stupid, but I hate watching the Hornets play with a 2nd half lead. Not only are they BORING to watch, but you know they are going to let a capable opponent back into the game. I'd rather they play from a score down all game because I at least know they'll play with some urgency while keeping some type of rhythm going.

As far as the officials go, you are 100% spot on. The BSC officials have got to be among the worst I've ever seen. They might even be worse than NBA officials, which actually says a lot. One great example from today's game was the long TD run by NAU that was eventually called back on a penalty. The Hornets defender pushed the runner towards the sideline just before he got to the endzone and the ref couldn't decide what to call. He was clueless as to what happened. After what seemed like an eternity, he finally decided to signal a TD. What he completely missed was the runner losing control of the ball before he got to the end zone,,which should have resulted in a touch back had the play stood. But he had no clue what happened.

I NEVER leave games early, win or lose, because who knows what might happen. But tonight, I really wanted to, though I didn't. Why? It had NOTHING to do with how the team was doing. Someone was spending the entire 4th quarter farting up a storm in our area. My friend and I had to constantly cover our noses, it was so disgusting.

You guys ever run into that at a game? Ugh!

So weird. I was crop dusting all night in my section and these two guys were freaking out. It was hilarious. What a coincidence that it would happen in two different sections at the same time!

I didn't see any of the game but checked in occasionally on my phone. This is exactly what came to mind when I saw the final. There is no doubt that change needs to happen. The Hornets let another winnable game slip through their hands and this one essentially ends the season. Time to hit the reset button.

Sperbeck is like Tom Craft. A successful JUCO coach, but not capable at the DI level. Some thought Craft would have success at San Diego St b/c he was successful at Palomar CC. Tom Craft started the downward spiral for SDSU football. A change must be made with hornet football leadership before the same thing happens here. For the record, Craft is having success again at the JUCO rank. RCC has had back to back winning seasons since he took over as HC two seasons ago. Maybe Sperb should take over Sac CC.

At least we can always agree on something - the Big Sky officials suck. At least in your game, you were in it and it might have made a difference. The Aggies were never in their game and maybe not even this season.

This game reminded me of my basic objection to the Pistol/read option (ESPECIALLY the read option). Way too often in this offense, the back hits the hole standing straight up. And they get jacked up as soon as they hit the line. We were always taught from Pop Warner to college that pad leverage wins the battle, both between linemen and in back-vs. LBer situations. Is it just me, or is this BASIC element of coaching being left out? Or is this intentional? The read option looks great when the blocking is right because the back is immediately free. But when there is NO hole, the back has to do much of it himself, and you can't do that when you get hit straight up and down in traffic.

Don't get me wrong. This is NOT just a Sac problem. I'm seeing it EVERYWHERE from HS to the NFL, and I find it horrible that in our hunt for the next great offense that we're forgetting the fundamentals....

Some guys have GOT to step up. Norrise (for HOW many weeks now) may as well have stayed in the dorm. Davis played his shell off on defense, but Odiase didn't do much. (Of course, Odiase seems to have gotten his emotions under control the last few weeks, as SD noted a week or two ago. The coaches must have gotten on his rear about that.)

(Cue the Denny Green video.) We can certainly recover next week, but our season is pretty much done unless there are some key upsets later. And even that might not be enough. There will be some good football to be played, to be sure, but it probably won't mean much.

First off, I never recall SD agreeing with you on the whole Odiase situation. Plenty of us actually agree that you have a personal vendetta against the kid. Do you Know him or something? Its seems like you've gotten what you wanted tho the kid has been stripped of his fire and his gameplay has suffered because of it, although he did have an interception. (imagine a quiet Deion Sanders, you wouldnt remember his name today if he didnt use his antics to encourage better gameplay out of himself). Who is there to liven up the defense now? A quiet defense is a dull and weak one. look at pro teams like the Ravens and Steelers teams like this have made their bread and butter from high energy and aggressive players. THATS HOW TEAMS WIN GAMES!! You must be so used to losing seasons that you now encourage it.

Norrise could play better, but without aggressive offensive play calling this will never happen. Running dive plays with 12 mins left isnt going to win us any games. I would have rather lost that game by numerous interception, being aggressive, than to lose it running dives up the middle with inexperienced backs. The Offense strengths need to be utilized to the best of its abilities in the spread offense and on defense we need to throw blitzes at shaky QBs.


We are not out of the playoff race but must win out.

First, it isn't so much that SD agreed with me, but that I, through observation over the last few weeks, have come to agree with the conclusion SD made several weeks before I did. The kid has his emotions under control now, for whatever reason, and is no longer the threat to implode that he was early on. I'm merely observing that he isn't making plays right now as others (such as Davis) are. That can easily change. In THIS game, it was probably just a matter of NAU avoiding him.

As far as the offense goes, I'm 100% behind you, BLEEDGREEN. SD noted that one as well: as soon as we get a lead, this staff goes into a shell, thereby allowing the opponent to get back into the game.

Your conclusion is correct, but we MUST get a killer instinct for it to happen. To get in, though, we probably have to win the Sky outright; I don't think even a share of the title will get it done, as we are not likely at this point to get in the polls, even if we DO win out. We will need help (and lots of it) from teams playing the likes of the Montanas, EWU, and Cal Poly.

I agree with BG. Odiase was never out of control and the coaches should let him play with his swagger so long as it doesn’t cost the team (which imo it wasn’t). Odiase is and has been our best cover corner for the past few years now; you let him do what he needs to do to keep his play at a high level.
