Not "if they lose to us"...WHEN they lose to us.

I like the positivity, but I’ve been hurt so many times in this relationship lol.

My favorite eGriz topic is them wanting Skattebo to get a targeting penalty for the way he runs.

All they have to do is get out of his way when they see him coming!

While I would disagree with that assessment (the eGriz ssessment, not yours, OSH), I wouldn't put it past the zebras. Anyone remember the NAU quarterback who got tossed for targeting (and it wasn't even close) after he threw a pick?

Week 8 - #2 Sac State vs #7 Montana

The 2nd ranked (wow can’t believe I just typed that) Hornets (6-0, 3-0 BSC) host the Montana Grizzlies (5-1, 2-1 BSC) on ESPN2. This game was slated to be a showdown between two top 5 teams until the Griz got punked at home against Idaho in a 23-30 loss last week. Prior to last week's loss, the Griz feasted on far inferior competition in non-conference play before opening BSC play with wins over Portland State, 53-16, and a 28-20 road win in the Pokey Dome against Idaho State.

The Montana run-pass option offense is led by quarterback Lucas Johnson (114/176, 1213 yds, 13 TD, 4 INT, 44 car, 182 yds, 6 TD). Johnson has a good touch on the ball and is mobile enough to move the chains. Montana has a handful of talented receivers. Mitch Roberts (28 rec, 346 yds, 4 TD) and playmaker Malik Flowers (14 rec, 210 yds, 1 TD) are the top targets and 5 other players have at least 11 receptions. The Griz offense is built around the run and they have a handful of players that share the load. Running backs Xavier Harris (41 car, 242 yds, 1 TD) is the speedster and Nick Ostmo (49 car, 242 yds, 1 TD) is the bruiser along with Marcus Knight (38 car, 192 yds, 3 TD). This offense wants to ground and pound behind their big offensive line.

Offensive Team Stats
  • Points scored per game: 37.3 (4th BSC)
  • Total Offense: 383.5 ypg (147.8 rushing ypg / 235.7 passing ypg) (5th/10th BSC)
  • Turnovers: 4/4 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone: 21/28 - 19/2 (TD/FG)

The Griz run an aggressive 3-3-5 and have the talented linebackers and secondary to bring an impactful blitz from any direction. The defense is led by free safety Robby Hauck (55 tkl, 1 TFL, 0.5 sac) but the heart and soul of this defense is linebacker Patrick O’Connell (50 tkl, 11 TFL, 7.5 sac, 2 INT) who leads the defense in every statistical category other than tackles. Alongside O’Connell is linebacker Marcus Welnel (47 tkl, 8 TFL, 4.5 sac) who is a major play disruptor as well.

Defensive Team Stats
  • Points allowed per game: 14.5 (2nd BSC)
  • Total Defense: 263.5 ypg (76.2 rushing ypg / 187.3 passing ypg) (1st/1st BSC)
  • Turnovers Forced: 5/4 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone: 7/8 - 5/2 (TD/FG)

The Griz special teams is where the impact is made. There are multiple players with big returns on punts and kickoffs and they have returned 2 punts to the house. Kicker Nico Ramos (3/4 FG, 19/21 PAT) hasn’t really been tested in the kicking game and punter Patrick Rohrbach (26 punts, 13 I-20) has a big leg with 8 punts of 50+ yards.

Hornet Team Stats
  • Points scored per game: 48.3 (1st BSC)
  • Points allowed per game: 20.0 (3rd BSC)
  • Total Offense: 519.8 ypg (275.3 rushing ypg / 244.5 passing ypg) (2nd/5th BSC)
  • Total Defense: 376.2 ypg (91.5 rushing ypg / 284.7 passing ypg) (3rd/11th BSC)
  • Turnovers: 5/3 (INT/Fum)
  • Turnovers Forced: 7/4 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone Offense: 33/38 - 28/5 (TD/FG)
  • Redzone Defense: 13/17 - 10/3 (TD/FG)

This is a huge game with BSC Title implications. UM statistically has a great defense, but they haven’t truly been tested until the last couple of weeks against the Idaho’s. In my opinion after watching those Idaho games, this defense looks vulnerable to an offense that can spread the ball out and target different players which is exactly what this Hornet offense excels at.

On the other side of the ball, this Griz offense doesn’t appear all that impressive on paper which is saying something considering the weak schedule they’ve had. The Hornet defense defends the rush better than the pass, however our Hornet defense has also been on the better side of some lopsided games meaning opponents were forced to play catchup and throw the ball more than they’d like.

I do think the UM special teams pose a serious threat in this game and could be a difference maker if the Hornets aren’t on point.

Hornets are rolling offensively and if they can jump on the Griz early it’ll take them out of their run first approach. I have a hard time seeing the Griz keep pace with a Hornet offense that’s hitting on all cylinders. That said, the Hornet defense has a propensity to give up the big play and UM has the talent to make things happen so things could get interesting. So I’m going with a comfortable Hornet win in front of 15k+ at Hornet Stadium.

Stingers Up!

The reason I'm highly confident regarding our chances of success is because the Montana football staff has shown absolutely no ability to out-coach Thompson and Taylor and Company.

Agree 100%

We are imploding so far with penalties. Play calling is puzzling. We have the best running back in FCS and he only has one carry so far.

Griz Dline is owning the Hornets. Dunniway is passing like a blind QB.
