35-13 Hornet win. Dominant performance by the Hornets, but it was a bit of a bumpy ridge for a significant portion of it. The Hornets needed to respond well following a let down at home and they took care of business on the road in wet and windy conditions to keep playoff hopes alive for at least another week.
The Hornet defense gets the game ball in this one. Some early turnovers by the Hornet offense were negated by a stout defensive effort that forced some field goals in short field situations as well as a couple of goal line stands to seal the deal for the Hornets. Couple that effort with a 2nd half shutdown and the Hornet defense is a large reason for the win. The Hornets didn't force any turnovers in the game but they got to the EWU quarterback 5 times and had 11 tackles for loss. Koa Akui (8 tak, 1.5 TFL) and Oscar Moore (8 tak) led the defense in tackles as 5 different players got a sack.
The Hornet offense stuck with its strengths and pounded the ball on the ground all game long. Rodney Hammond Jr (22 car, 208 yds, 2 TD) had a huge game, most of which came in the first half. Freshman running back JaQuail Smith (12 car, 117 yds, 2 TD) continues to impress as had another outstanding game as the one-two combo of Hammond and Smith were too much for the EWU defense to stop. The Hornets did have some ball control issues as they turned the ball over 3 times, there was also a lack of execution at times that let EWU hang around longer than they should have. Hornet fans got their first glimpse of quarterback Jamar Malone (1 car, 3 yds) late in the game, which one would believe that he would have seen more snaps had the Hornets put this game out of reach sooner than they did.
Hornets have another trip to the Pacific Northwest next week so keep the ponchos at arms length.
