Recap/Thoughts
The Hornets (6-3, 4-2 BSC) entered the game coming off of an emotional week and pull off the upset of #11 Cal Poly (7-1, 5-1) in a 35-29 victory in front of 8,113 at Hornet Stadium. The Hornet offense had a tremendous game and the defensive did a good enough job of containing CP’s explosive triple option attack. It was an interesting game to watch as CP jumped out to an early 10 point lead due to Hornet fumbles. But the Hornets rallied and then held off a feisty Mustang offense at the end of the game.
Offense
The offense had everything working for them this game. Their only blemishes were 2 early fumbles that gifted CP 10 points. Aside from those mistakes it was a near perfect game. Safron has a tremendous game and I expect a BSC POTW award to be headed his way. He connected with the receivers both short and deep and absolutely shredded the Mustang defense. The offense did bog down in the 2nd half but the Hornets were able to take a big lead with a late TD and sealed it with a huge 3rd down conversion in the waning minutes that allowed them to kill the clock.

A great game all around for this offense. Safron looked calm and composed throughout the game and he made all the right decisions, had good accuracy and even made some great throws down the field. I’m hoping that this is the breakthrough that we have all been waiting for. A lot of credit has to go to the Hornet OL. Without their solid blocking upfront, Safron would not have had the time to shred the Mustang secondary and open holes for the running game. The WR’s showed great hands and finally made plays on the deep balls. Norrise made an amazing one handed grab for an early TD and then made another huge catch on the game winning TD with a CP defender all over him. Norrise moved into second in career receptions behind Fred Amey with this performance. Graham was Graham yet again and Coleman continued to impress.
The Hornets need to really work on ball control. They have had issues taking care of the ball all season and it really needs to get cleaned up if they want to get serious about a playoff run. Knowles had an awful fumble that killed the game opening drive (it was almost identical to his fumble against WSU). Norrise followed him with a fumble on the very next Hornet offensive play while he was fighting for extra yards. The Hornets just need to be smarter with the football. Both of those turnovers were avoidable imo.
Defense
The defense did what they needed to do to allow the Hornets to win this game. The front 6 played really well. The Hornets did struggle to contain CP on the edges at times but they made CP work for their yards. The defense forced a few 3 and outs and even made up for some early Hornet turnovers by creating some turnovers themselves. It wasn’t a pretty game defensively but they didn’t lose heart and kept battling. I was especially impressed with the defensive line. They got excellent pressure on Broadous when he had to pass and really kept him frustrated for most of the game.
Game Stats:
- • Passing Allowed: 86 yds (21.5 ypc), 1 TD
• Rushing Allowed: 387 yds (5.7 ypr), 3 TD’s
• Total Offense Allowed: 473 yds, 4 TD’s, 1 FG
• Opponent Tim of Possession: 29:42
• Turnovers Forced: 2 (0 INT’s, 2 Fum’s)

• (#42) Allen/ (#90) Cowger: 5 tackles
• (#62) Lawrence: 4 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack
• (#51) White: 4 tackles, 1.5 TFL’s, 0.5 sacks
• (#3) Washington: 4 tackles
• (#7/#14) Armstrong/ (#97) Castro/ (#49) Mazza: 3 tackles
• (#94) Eskew/ (#46) Sannadan/ (#98) Faimalo/ (#44) Sankey/ (#20) Payne: 2 tackles
• Everyone else: 1 tackle
Although the Hornets played well upfront, it was the secondary that let CP stay in this game late. With CP facing a 4th and long and trailing by 2 TD’s; the secondary gave up a huge circus play that let this game be closer than it should have. Kudos to CP’s WR for making an amazing play, but in all honesty it should have never happened. Odiase tried to be a hero going for a pick instead of making the tackle and he gave up a huge catch…but wait there’s more. Odaise was able to recover and hawk down the CP WR but whiffed on the tackle allowing the WR to waltz into the endzone. The Hornet secondary needs to step up. They have given up key plays all season long and have to somehow make plays in clutch situations.
Special Teams
The special teams had an okay game for almost the entire game. The punting by Weldon and Magleby was great but Norrise muffed a punt (that was recovered by the Hornets) and the kick coverage wasn’t very good and had a lapse late in the game.
Game Stats:
- • (#58) Castaneda: 0/0 FG’s, 5/5 PAT’s, 1 kickoffs for 59.0 ypk avg., 0 TB
• (#52) Ruhnke: 5 kickoffs for 58.8 ypk avg., 0 TB
• (#45) Weldon: 3 punts for a 46.7 ypp avg., 2 I-20
• (#4) Magleby: 1 punt for 36.0 yppp avg., 1 I-20
• (#13) Norrise: 2 pr’s for 2 yds
• Kick Coverage: Allowed 133 yds on 6 returns (22.2 ypr)
• Punt Coverage: Allowed 8 yds on 1 returns (8.0 ypr)
Similarly to the defense, they lost their focus late in the game and gave up a big return that gave CP great field position and kept them in the game. The hands team came through and had a huge play on an onside attempt that allowed the Hornets to control the ball.
Injuries
Safron played with some stitches in his hand but it didn’t negatively impact his game. Weaver missed another game. Avery White got back into action this week and it looked like last week’s ankle injury to Norrise didn’t linger into this week. I don’t recall seeing any Hornets being helped off the field.
The Hornets need to build off of this tough win and keep playing tough as they welcome in a top ranked Montana State team into Hornet Stadium next week. I am concerned that this Hornet team might be emotionally spent given all that is going on both on and off the field. Hopefully this program can keep its focus and continue battling.
Go Hornets!
