Welcome back to the Park Blocks!

It just occurred to me that he was on our staff for the only year that we've been to the DI playoffs.

Coach Burton has my support without question. Now get on that recruiting trail coach and good luck!

Portland State: FootballScoop has learned that Portland State intends to hire Nevada DC Nigel Burton as head coach.

Nigel Burton expected to be named next Portland State football coach

Nevada defensive coordinator Nigel Burton is expected to be named Portland State’s new football coach as soon as Tuesday, pending a final interview scheduled for late Monday with PSU president Wim Wiewel.

Burton was the recommended choice of the six-member selection committee headed by athletic director Torre Chisholm, and the Monday meeting with Wiewel was considered a mere formality, giving the president a chance to endorse or overrule the selection.

An announcement would end a three-week search to replace Jerry Glanville, who resigned Nov. 17 after three consecutive losing seasons.

Burton, 33, graduated in 1999 from Washington and has spent the past nine seasons as an assistant coach, beginning in 2001 when he joined Tim Walsh’s staff at Portland State as a cornerbacks and special teams coach.

After two seasons with the Vikings, Burton worked five seasons as the cornerbacks coach at Oregon State under Mike Riley, and then became Nevada’s defensive coordinator under Chris Ault before the start of the 2008 season.

Chisholm would neither confirm nor deny Monday that Burton is his choice to replace Glanville, the former NFL coach who went 9-24 in three seasons with the Vikings and stepped down with one year remaining on his contract.

The other finalists for the position were San Diego State offensive coordinator Al Borges, former Army coach Stan Brock, Cal Poly defensive coordinator Greg Lupfer and Willamette coach Mark Speckman.

Chisholm apparently gave his recommendation to Wiewel after a Friday meeting with several players, who also were involved in the interview process.

Walsh, now the coach at Cal Poly, endorsed Lupfer for the position, but described Burton as “bright, up-and-coming coaching prospect” with a reputation as a strong recruiter.

“Nigel believes that he had readied himself for the next step,” Walsh said. “I think he’s a guy that will be a hot commodity in the future, because of how bright he is and the connections that he has. He has a good working knowledge of Portland State, and I think that’s a positive.”

Walsh said the key for any young, first-year coach is in putting together a staff.

“As far as being the head coach at Portland State, he needs to know what is available and what isn’t available to him, so he can make decisions on how he’s going find ways to get things done,” Walsh said. “Prioritizing those things is extremely important.

“You need to win every year everywhere. If you’re any kind of a coach, that’s the No. 1 priority that you have. But at PSU, there are so many things that the you have to do in order to enable yourself to be able to win that it’s not easy."

Burton is expected to inherit a team that could return as many as 65 players from last season's team that finished 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the Big Sky Conference. Key starters include quarterback Drew Hubel, slot receiver Raymond Fry, defensive end Travis Beckley, linebacker Ryan Rau, free safety Cody Worthen, and kicker Zach Brown.

Nevada (8-4) placed second in the Western Athletic Conference and will play Southern Methodist in the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl. The Wolfpack’s defense ranked first in the nine-team conference against the run, ninth against the pass, and third in total defense, giving up 27.2 points and 398.9 yards a game.

Burton was a standout defensive back at Sacramento’s Jesuit High School and then played one season at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., before the school dropped football in 1995.

He transferred to Washington where he started 35 of 36 games as a safety and was a three-time Pac-10 all-academic selection, helping the Huskies to three consecutive bowl appearances.

Good luck coach. I hope you are able to hire some help.

Can anyone put my mind at ease and cite someone, somewhere who has succeeded as a 33 year old head coach at the FCS level?

It is very telling that Walsh is quoted as saying that Burton must feel like he has prepared himself for this position.

FCS specifically or just division 1?

At this point, I'll take either!

After a google, I came up with Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern. An encouraging example. And I came up with Lane Kiffin at Tennessee. Not so good.

Only 2 finds. Maybe I have to hang my hopes on the Pat Fitzgerald example. Doesn't seem like good odds.

Maybe you can find more.

After the way Nevada played tonight, I'm even more excited about Nigel Burton. Apparently his defensive expertise was the only thing keeping Nevada together.

You're joking, right? SMU freshman Kyle Padron threw for an SMU-record 460 yards as SMU crushes Nevada 45-10 and you're excited about Nigel Burton? The 12-point underdogs dominated from the opening bell, jumping out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and building a 38-0 advantage by the third. I am very concerned.

Exactly. ;) Nigel Burton was not there anymore.

Nigel Burton was not there for the Hawaii Bowl. Nevada's secondary has struggled for years even before Burton showed up, but they did make strides in the right direction with him in Reno. The moment he left, they looked completely confused. Which is funny considering that wasn't the first time they had seen the R&S offense.

So like I said, Burton was the glue keeping that untalented Nevada defense together. Without him, well.......watch the 2009 Hawaii Bowl.

You mean the R and S was used in that game? The same thing we were trying to install?? On the other hand, maybe SMU can recruit better than we can. :-)

Or they can coach better than we can. :(

I understand that Burton wasn't there. My concern is that it all fell apart. It was his system and his coaches running that system. Doesn't give me the best confidence.

Could VikThunder....Could. ;) Jerry and his style of offense are gone. Towards the end, I'm not even sure if we really were running the R&S.

I'll bet if you asked Mouse, we quit running the run and shoot when we moved the QB out from under center three years ago. ;-)
