Wendell Wright

Wright has sprouted up in the past year and now is being forecasted as a wing-type. He has long arms and overall nice length to play the three at the next level. Wright gets most of his points off of quick drives to the hole. Furthermore, he has a nice feel to the game - especially his passing. In the coming seasons he needs to smoothen out that jump shot to play at the mid-major level or higher.

Wright has a ton of promise if he can work out some of the kinks in his game. He has that proto-typical wing-type body (and he-s not done growing yet either) that colleges covet. He has long arms and pretty soft hands and he's a solid athlete. Offensively, he's at his best when slashing (uses his body well in traffic) to the basket and converts on a regular basis. However, there are two areas (handle and shooting) that need some refining - most notably his shooting (very flat on its flight).

Hey all,

Here's what I put up on the blog about Wright. My favorite part is Wright being described as "Justynn Hammond if he wasn't a head case."

Question to the board:

If PSU didn't make it to the NCAA tourney this past season, do we land Wright?

I say no. Curious about other responses.

Absolutely. When you look at Portland State and Coach Ken Bone, you see a program on the rise. In addition to LMU (where he landed), he was also in the running at Gonzaga, Iowa State, Pepperdine and UNLV. http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=44414&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncb%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fplayer%3frecruitId%3d44414

I'm sure at least part of his decision to attend LMU was that it was close to home in Los Angeles, and he seemed to think well of the coach who was there. What I see in Portland State is a team that could compete well in the WCC, is also on the West Coast and has a venerable coach with the kinds of qualities he likely saw in LMU Head Coach Rodney Tention. But the only way to have sealed the deal is to have shown him what the future holds in terms of facilities and to regard our beloved gym as being phased out.

It's Official!

Viking Basketball Signs Wendell Wright For the Coming Season

I really like to see some high school players being signed. We need more of that, and less transfers, to grow the program.

Full package minus a beautiful shot. You'd have to hope a few years developing in the Viking system will allow him to cultivate his scoring touch. I guarantee the coaching staff is expecting more than 8 points a game from him if and when he starts 2-3 years down the road.

Wendell was not playing on a healthy ankle last season, so believe that his scoring will go up in numbers in the coming years. At the start of the 2007-2008 season Wendell had a high ankle sprain. Which didn't allow him to play his game. He was able to improve his defensive skills and his His coach used him at point, which allowed him to improve his handles and point guard skills. You will see big positive things from your incoming freshman out of Lakewood, CA. So watch out ;)

Welcome evereux! I have only read about Wendell's game but I have heard good things. I actually followed his recruitment for a while because a kid, Orlando Johnson, from our area (Gilroy) played for LMU, but has since transferred. I remember reading that it was kind of a big deal that LMU got him, now the Viks must be real enthused.

I think this is the answer to your question, from:

http://www.goviks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?temp_site=NO&DB_OEM_ID=19300&ATCLID=1481478

“It’s amazing how many out-of-area kids we talk with who’ve heard of PSU...’you guys played Kansas in the first round of the NCAA tournament,’ they’ll say. Two years ago, it was a different story, we had to sell the program a little harder,” he said.

In terms of sell, Geving said the city of Portland is probably the thing prospective players find most attractive (although, playing in even Portland’s fairly tame inner city can be an obstacle for some players from smaller communities). “Portland and our urban location are more often a plus, though. It’s the advantage we often have in recruiting against most of our Big Sky rivals”.

As an example, he pointed to highly regarded 6’5” guard/forward Wendell Wright, a recent addition to next year’s team, who is from the Los Angeles area and chose PSU over Northern Arizona.
