We're #243 out of 255 schools

From the latest RealTime RPI rating of the total FBS and FCS football teams we have almost hit rock bottom with a RPI rating of 243 out of the total 255 teams. Our administration should take note of this and wonder if this is the vision they have for our football program here at UNC. Other sports at UNC are doing fine and many are at the top of our conference. We should be doing better and find our way back to being a respectable football team once again.

Check out the ratings of all 255 schools.

Go Bears and turn this mess around.

Nice. Only 1 team with 1 win below us and the rest are all zero win teams. If this is what passes as fine with the university, then I just assume drop the program. We know they can do better, because they have done better. We need to expect/demand more.

Purely pathetic. Don't hold your breath on any changes in the off-season though. The school is broke.

If anyone else wants to be a bit depressed as well, go look at our stats for the conference. We're just about dead last in every category.

What a mess..

Of course it is... the AD and president have talked about dropping down to DII

You're a liar.

The real facts are that UNC finished 3rd in the Big Sky President's Cup last year, soccer and volleyball just won conference championships (again), women's basketball has won 20 games 6 times in 8 seasons, oh, and men's basketball won the conference's first ever postseason tournament in 2018. Overall, UNC athletics is doing *great* in Division I, and I'm pretty sure the powers that be would sooner drop football altogether than move the entire university back down to Division II.

More name calling... speaks to the class of the commentators on the board and the lack of a moderator who take the position seriously. Of course, dropping down to DII has been discussed. I realized that like beaten animals, the commentators on this board who are supporting one of the worst DI programs in the history of the NCAA attack even reasonable statements. And what I love most is bragging the men’s bb team won a post season tournament they had to pay to enter... now, that is pathetic as teams with any self respect would have rather sat out the post season than play in...

Let's break down the claims of your latest gem of a post.

1. "More name calling" followed by a swipe at yours truly. Calling you a liar is calling out your zest for making claims with no evidence at all to back them up. Something that is evident to everyone on this board. If you disagree, please feel free to back your statements up with actual evidence. Until then, calling you a liar is fair game and I will allow it.

2. "Supporting one of the worst D1 programs in history" - if you are talking about our entire sports program then even you know that's an outlandish statement. We really are competitive in the Big Sky in every sport but 1. If you are justmreferring to football, then yes, we have been really bad but it is hyperbolic at best to say one of the worst in D1 history. Google Columbia football to see what real futility looks like.

3. "any self respect would have rather sat out the post season than play in..." - This just reeks of elitism. I am a runner and run marathons and half marathons, but I am not fast. I enter races with around 3,000 other runners, and only 50 or so of them actually are running to win the race for their age group. The rest of us need to find other reasons to run. Basketball players at UNC harbor no illusions of winning March Madness or going g to the NBA. They do it because they love they game and they want to compete at the level UNC competes at. That team you seem to think embarrassed themselves by playing in a small time tournament, got to enjoy a few more games together and brought an atmosphere to UNC basketball that was magical. Everyone else seemed to be able to enjoy the success they had at the level they play at.
In the immortal words of Joe Glenn "Big time is where you are at."

I agree 100% with you Brian. UNC just won the Big Sky Soccer and the Big Sky Valleyball. Both Women’s and Mens BB have been successful as well as golf teams. Yes football has been a huge disappointment and all that takes is a good HC to turn it around

This board is as sad and pathetic as the whole mess of an athletic program. When UNC was DII, the teams had a chance to play for actual titles, as the football team did. How many titles might the volleyball team have competed for by now at DII? But now, the fans and school settle for mediocrity, in a mediocre conference. No wonder the Tribune does not even cover the team... sad... call me all the names you want since logic obviously scares the hell out of you. I am right about DII...

BTW, Joe Glenn coached the Bears to two championships at DII, not DI

Moving down a division to increase winning odds sounds like "settling for mediocrity" to me. It also sounds "sad and pathetic."

This morning on ESPN.com the front-and-center story is "Duke Falls to Stephen F. Austin in Largest Upset in 15 Seasons." Duke is the big dog, the Yankees/Patriots/Alabama/etc. of NCAA men's basketball. Their coach--Coach K--was selected to coach the US Olympic team made up of NBA all-stars. Their players year after year are the best of the best. Duke came into the game ranked #1 in the nation. They had not lost a nonconference game at home in 20 years, a span of 150 games. Duke was a 27.5 point favorite to throttle SFA, a mid-major in a mediocre conference with no chance of winning the NCAA title this year.

But SFA won. And it is NATIONAL news.

I wonder how Stephen F. Austin athletes, students, and alumni feel about this. Despite their joy at slaying Goliath, the national recognition of their program and school, and the miraculous tale that will live on for generations--are some of them thinking screw all this, we should be in D2 competing for a title. Or maybe D3? We could have ten D3 titles by now!

The men's basketball team only lost by a few points to West Virginia and has been beating Wyoming on the regular. Good luck having that happen in D2. Also, I went the CIT championship in Greeley. Guess what? It was packed and it was the best time I've had since I was at the Big Sky Championship that got us into the freaking NCAA tournament. Good luck having that happen in D2.

Actually in 1989 it was packed when UNC hosted the DII Regional Finals with a chance to go to the Elite 8. Packing stadiums and fan support is about winning.

When we are a DII powerhouse in football 1996 -2004 Nottingham had great attendance and overflowing crowds when hosting DII playoff games why,,,,because were winning.

I have no problem what level we are at if we are funded and competitive. Kay Dalton warned on the move to DI we would not be funded and he was right. We started losing and the crowds disappeared.

I wonder if you were to ask the players on 96&97 National Championship teams if they would trade their National Champions rings for a non conference victory over a Oklahoma or some other powerhouse what they would say.
