"We're a Division II team playing a Division I schedule

Downing stated that in the article in the Trib today. What!? We are a fully eligible D-I team who has had 5 years to recruit D-I athletes! What crack does he think we are smoking? It would be one thing if he said we are very young or we suck or something along those lines but don't p#$s down my back and tell me it's raining! Just when I was starting to think we were turning a corner Downing comes out with his BS excuses that are not based in any level of reality. You are killing my Bears "coach" downing! You took a once proud program that produced on the field and reduced it to a program filled with excuses.

Anyhow here is the article:

I watched the game on Big Sky TV and to me it looked like we played a very good game against Eastern. We came very close to winning that game and the Eastern anouncer even stated many times that UNC was out playing them. I saw a much better team out there than I saw earlier in the season and to me, that gives me hope that we are on the right track to success.

I agree that the team played much better this weekend but Downing needs to quit making weak excuses.

I read that quote also and the first thing I thought was wait, where are the follow up questions? Whoever was taking that statement really let him off the hook by not asking him to explain further exactly what he meant.

However, if he simply meant we have DII talent I agree, otherwise I agree with JJJJ we have fully completed our transition and have no excuse for not upgrading the program with a 5 year lead in. That is sort of why they make you wait that long, so theoretically after 5 years you will build to the appropriate level, not regress.

So yeah I agree, the quote makes no sense without further explanation. If he did mean we have DII talent (which we do) that is a slap in the face of the players so I'm guessing he didn't mean it that way and is playing the whole "whoa is me" card in an effort to save his job after next year when we are just as terrible.

I think he was misquoted. The Tribune does this all the time. He's never before thrown the players under the bus. Seriously though the Trib is known for this kind of crap all the time.

BTW, JJJ aren't you a Griz fan? Shouldn't you be posting on egriz instead?

It was certainly misquote. If Downing has been one thing in his career with the Bears it is protecting of his players and that was definitely an unintended shot at them.

I would say a misquote by the Trib in this case is likely. I don't have any idea would say something like that after playing our two best games of the year. My opinion of Downing is actually beginning to turn around, he may actually have something going here.

NOT A MISQUOTE!!!!!!! Downing has been saying that since the day he arrived on campus.

From his first coaching meeting in 2006 (I was there) he has had this feeling about the players.

Downing is putting the blame on the players so when he gets fired he has another excuse that relieves him of responsibilty for his part in destroying a program.

I will however say that the team is not as talented as the teams they play in the big sky or the top team in the RMAC. the two wns in the past two seasons are over teams that overlooked the bears because they are so bad.

People wake up and lets focus on basketball this football season much like the football program is a wash!

I tend to agree with the sentiment that it was not a misquote. Are some of you suggesting the Tribune just made this up out of thin air? I'm sure he said it but what the lingering question for me is what was the exact content? It's just a bizare thing to say without further explanation.

If he is being critical of the players my response to him would be to look in the mirror if he wants to see even more DII talent.

If that quote was right, Hinrichs will be fired up. He hates any mention of Division II, and that had a lot to do with Dalton's firing.

He probably nearly busted a vessel when he read that.

He was misquoted. What that guy wrote, Coach Downing never said. The guy took poor notes, and was actually an idiot.

End of discussion

"We feel like we've been coming to the end of the season and we've been getting better every week," Downing said. "We're a Division II team that's playing a Division I schedule," he reminded.

I think he was talking about the coaching staff.

According to the Dunkel Index, we are now ranked 83rd out of 122 1-AA teams. just two weeks ago, we were ranked 101st. I guess we are getting better each week!

If this is the reporter I'm thinking of, he attempted to horn his way into our post-game interview with Scott--rather unprofessionally. I had a clear view from the press box to where Chris was handling the interview and saw this guy "lurking"...

That pole is a great measure of how far our program has fallen and how this "we're a DII" excuse holds no water.

1) North Dakota State
7) South Dakota State
23) Central Arkansas
29) UC-Davis
83) UNC

It was a misquote. Downing apologized to the team yesterday for it and explained what he said and how they misinterpreted him. He believes in his players.

How was he misquoted I wonder?

I guess I'm just not buying the whole the Tribune made it up out of thin air conspiracy theory.

So he said it but what did he mean by it I would love to know.

What he meant to say was that he had a "DIII team playing DI football".

You don't like Downing so of course you're going to not believe he was misquoted. The Tribune is known for this. They misquote all the time.
