"We're a Division II team playing a Division I schedule

How was he misquoted I wonder?

How does the Tribune make any of their other mstakes? They screw up all the time. Nothing they put in there surprises me anymore. I just know that Downing wouldn't degrade his players like that, especially after the way the last two games have gone.

I agree with everyone that the quote seems bizarre to say the least. I guess I just don't understand the misquoted part in the sense that some guy at the Tribune just decided to completely fabricate a quote just for what, the heck of it? Or due to some vendetta? He'd risk his credibility and job just to stick it to Downing in a manner that would be very simple to verify and disprove.

So yes, he obviously said it. That's why I keep asking what the context was. I agree it could have been fairly harmless but we really have no idea what he meant and I for one am curious to know although I realize I probably never will.

Someone mentioned me disliking Downing. I do yeah, when they lose, when they win I like him...

I cannot contemplate how a quote like that could have been taken out of context. What context could possibly make that statement acceptable? The majority of the team are underclassmen who were recruited as D-I athletes. They knew that they would be playing for a fully eligible D-I team by the time they got any significant playing time. I doubt UNC was being classified as a D-II school when the players were being recruited.

You're more then welcome to email coach Downing. I already did and recieved an explenation. He's open, go ahead and ask him.

Why don't you just share the explanation he gave you with the rest of us?

On the Tribune matter, they have not sent a single reporter to a road game this season. They have been hiring stringers at each place, so this may not even be a "the Tribune misquoted him" case. This appears to be a sloppy reporting matter.

I'll ask coach about it on the show, though, to try and clear it up.

Thanks I can't wait for his answer!

Not sending reports to games is shady for the "Hometown" paper....

As far as misquoting goes there are a thousand ways to distort what someone says without just inventing things out of the air.

Example:
When I was in school I was on the UNC club fencing team. As part of being an officer of the team I went to a forum hosted by club sports on fundraising. I was interviewed by the Mirror while there. The reporter asked if my club had done fundraising in the past, and I said that we had done some but not as much as we would like to in the future. The Mirror printed that I said we had hardly done any fundraising in the past....

That is not what I said, as a club sport we had to fundraise an ammount equal to 50% of our university allotment, which we had done, we just wanted to do more.

This kind of stuff happens all the time, and the fact that the Trib did not actually have a reporter there probably just magnified the problem...

With the Trib, keep in mind Matt Schumann is the beat guy, which makes it tougher to send him on road trips.

Plus, at least they're trying stringers. For hoops during the transition, they've just used the Associated Press wraps.

That email is between me and coach. His explanation was fair enough for me. Troy did you get a chance to ask him on the coaches show last night??

Yes, and the gist of it is that the guy was asking questions that made it appear that he hadn't watched the game. Scott was attempting to fill him in on where the program had come from--i.e. D-2 through the transition--because the reporter had no knowledge of who UNC was or is.

So, apparently this reporter had no recorder, was limited in his notetaking and wound up combining statements that had to do with what the program has gone through the past five years.

I do know this much: Scott didn't hesitate to address it, speaking at length about it.

For all those interested the tribune has the quote on its website.

Bears Radio it is pretty evident that the reporter did have a recorder (the interview and quote is up on the website) and the quote was accurate. I think jumping on the tribune as the wrong party here is pretty inaccurate by you. Downing said it and it appears that he can't get it to go away like he wants. Should he by lynched for it - no. Should fans have the right to complain about him saying it - yes.

You're putting words in my mouth. I summarized what Scott said, including couching it this way:

"apparently this reporter had no recorder"

Apparently. I couldn't verify whether the reporter had one or not, so I included "apparently". Not once there did I express that Scott's comment was the hard and fast truth.

Either way this isn't good for our coach. I don't know what was said or what wasn't said but this whole tape recorder throws a monkey wrench in the whole situation. I don't feel good about being lied to in my email from him and Troy you shouldn't be happy about being lied to when you asked him face to face. Wonder how his players feel now?

When I read it it seemed that you were stating them as fact. My apologies for misinterpreting your comments.

From the article on the trib's website:

"Sure, the comment reads like Downing downgraded his talent to provide excuses for the Bears’ 1-9 record, but he didn’t. Listen to the interview on the Tribune’s Web site and I think it sounds like Downing just misspoke when he tried to explain his team’s transition from Division II to Division I-AA to an unfamiliar reporter."

So he misspoke, it happens, build a bridge and get over it....

Now that I heard the comment in context, I think that what he meant to say is that we're NOT a Division II team playing a Division I schedule. He continued to say that we're full members of the Big Sky, but are nevertheless in a growing period. That's my interpretation, but maybe I'm just crazy.

Would be fine with that if that if SD would have said that. Instead he tried to give it the rope a dope all week. There is the problem.
