We're not very good

Most posters have probably not even heard of Coach Brady. That goes way back before the dawn of computers. That was an awful time in Sac State football history where the Hornets had one of the longest football loosing streaks in the nation at any level. So much has happened since then and the program got so, so much better but know that yesterday probably felt like those days were back.

Do not know what needs to happen, but something needs to change very soon to turn around all the positive strides that the program has made and yet seems to be all slipping away.

We have been so close so many years to Sac State football becoming consistently relevant and here we are.

and of course there is always the next game and the game after that and trust that the players and coaches will do their best to fight on for Sacramento State!!

Stingers Up!!

Dr. Glenn Brady was a disaster. They fired Ray Clemons, the coach that made Sac State Football relevant after the finishing the 1975 season 5-5. Coach Clemons only had a BA and since the school's name had recently changed from Sacramento State College to CSUS the President, James Bond (real name) thought a football coach at University should have a advanced degree. Enter Brady basically a clueless salesman who said we would win the National D2 Title within 3 years. Instead he went 2-8 and 0-10-1, I remember some blowouts about 77-0 along the way. He was canned after 2 seasons and Coach Mattos was hired to rebuild the program from the ground up.

If we need to hire another football coach I hope we do a nationwide search instead of just throwing the keys to the next guy standing there. The school has a history of doing that and it hasn't turned out well.

One potential head coach to look at is our own Darren Arbet . He was just hired as a assistant at Humboldt State after the San Jose Sabercats went out of business. He can't be making too much at Humboldt, he's not only is a Hornet but a proven winner!

Darren Arbet
Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers/Special Teams

Darren Arbet joins the Lumberjacks after spending 15 seasons as the head coach of the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League. He led the SaberCats to a 188-82 overall record and four ArenaBowl Championships (2002, 2004, 2007 and 2015). His teams won 10 or more regular season games in 12 of his 15 seasons. During Arbet’s time with the SaberCats, he was twice named AFL Coach of the Year (2000 and 2002) and was inducted into the Arena Football League Hall of Fame (2011). Not only was Arbet the Sabercats head coach, but he was also minority owner from 2011-15.

While with the SaberCats, Arbet spent time with two NFL franchises. In 2004, he worked with the Atlanta Falcons' special teams and linebackers, and in 2003 he spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers player personnel department. Both opportunities were part of the NFL's minority internship program.

He served as an assistant coach with San Jose (1995-99), the Albany Firebirds (1994-95) and the River City Gamblers (1992-93) before becoming the Sabercats’ leader. Arbet was an assistant coach (1990-91) with his alma mater, Sacramento State, following his AFL playing career.

He was a four-year letterwinner at defensive end for the Hornets (1981-85). Arbet earned a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from Sacramento State.

I second Arbet!

While we are at it, change the O scheme to something like Cal Poly. Simplify the game, waaaaay toooo much is placed on recruiting, grooming and then watching that player not perform because of the complexity of the system, ala a lost season. Only becoming proficient late junior/senior season.
Why not install a system that can be reloaded quickly with a minimal of playbook learning? Cal Poly overcomes any shortfall by having a simplified playbook and a stable of position players who can step in and perform rather quickly without having to spend two years on them because they are 'young'?
Giving anyone five years to perform is lunacy, look at the new Portland State HC, he struck lighting in his first year. So it is really the HC and not the players. Sperbeck had FCS level players and was evident the first Sears year, but saying they are young and will need to be experienced to perform is BS.

I'm not surprised we would suck pretty bad this season, however I didn't think we would suck this bad. This is a new low for Hornet football and it's looking like Moosh might be off the hook for worst D1 era coach in our history, and that is saying a lot considering the resources that have been poured into FB over the last decade.

I don't expect things to get much better as the season progresses, we might get lucky and find a win or 2, but that's not going to cut it. The ball is in Macriss' court now so we'll see if he is cut out to be a D1 caliber AD. Sears is on the hook for another year at a base salary of $175k making Marciss' first immediate need to scrounge up the dinero to buy him out while simultaneously finding a way to make this HC position appealing to qualified candidates. This should be interesting.

......meanwhile Pres. Nelson has asked for a 1% campuswide reduction.

Why is Wulff Asst. HC? It was mentioned that Sears would devote more of his time to fundraising and recruiting, so perhaps Wulff is the de facto onfield HC? So maybe Macriss has identified this and has already started taking steps to assure Wulff is in place like Coach C. did when he took over for Smith?

.....or it could be utter chaos and morale sucking vibes being cast from the Broad. They better wakeup fast, Fresno is a 10 ton tobacco spittin Dodge Dually ready to post a 77-0 Valley Dominant ass-whippin on the Hornets.

If the game is 50+. I say Macriss fires after the game and starts picking up pieces for next year. Spend the money on a new coach that you've spent on new uniforms every year, that is a start.

Maybe the school could wrap this up in the same Sears Roebuck class action bankruptcy?

I never said SDH's boy Sperbeck was the worst thing that ever happened to Hornet football. But he is the third worst...right behind Brady and Mooshagian.

John Volek belongs in that mix too. He took Mike Clemons 5-5 1995 team and went 4-6-1 (although somehow still managed to win the pathetic American West Championship) He followed that up by going 1-10 in both the 1997 and 1997 seasons. Sperbeck or Sears never reached that level of futility although if Sears can't straighten out this mess he may have a shot this year.

If Sears is out, who would you keep on staff if any?

Totally up to the new head coach, his name is on the bottom line. He needs to have the freedom to assemble the staff he feels that he needs to win. If it works he gets the credit, if not he gets the blame which could/ should cost him his job.

For the record, Angus would be a looong shot to get. With this university's propensity to put bus tracks on the backs of alumni much more quickly than people that deserve to be shown the door.

Personally i would like to see us bring in someone from the MVC or CAA ....

I think you are right about Angus, he is out of our price range as was Mark Massari when the AD job was open.
About your comment that alumni were thrown under the bus, I don't agree. Sac State Football has had only two alumni head coaches, Bob Mattos and Mike Clemons I don't think that either were thrown under the bus.
If you are talking about alumni assistant coaches they are expendable like any other assistant. That's the head coach's call. I don't care where the new head coach comes from, results are all that matters.
I have no intention of watching much more of the type of performance we saw on the field last Saturday.

If we get a new coach and it's more of the same it might be time to pull the plug, save money and concentrate our resources on sports in which we are more competitive.

Yeah I have to disagree with throwing Alumni under the bus, the One positive with Sears was getting Alumni back. Golf Tournament with reunion and dinner during the spring is awesome and the flag football game in the fall. Also I know alumni come back for Davis Friday night meal. So if he has done one thing it would be getting alumni back. But we still are not very good. Because of the non football things Sears has done I have been hoping more and giving him chances but this lost last week was the worst. Only way he can kind of redeem would be winning tonight vs Fresno State or win the Big Sky. But both to me are wishful thinking

10-3 at halftime against Fresno State. Hats off the the Hornet defense tonight so far. Keep it up Hornet D and may the Hornet offense improve in the 2nd half.

Stingers Up at Fresno State in the 2nd half. May it be a battle and may the team continue to show improvement

and then the 4th quarter happened. And Fresno State goes 27-1 or 28-1 against FCS visitors including us for the third time in Bulldog Stadium. Looking forward to that day that we might win in Fresno as our program for decades has wanted to be like FSU. Still a dream in football.

May the 2016 Hornets do whatever is needed to put together a good game in Ogden next week.

Stingers Up!!
