Western Oregon @ Portland State Thread

My thoughts:

Please tell me Mouse will start Hubel against UC Davis?!?! What a difference today, as Hubel was better at throwing into coverage and identifying open men downfield.

Welcome back, Bobby! So good to have you in the fold and delivering punishing hits.

Reggie Jones is just plain fun.

I thought I'd also make a note about the attendance. I feel like 8k is decent for a team coming off a 3-8 season and an August game before students get to campus. WOU fans did make up a decent portion of the crowd. They travel very well, are very classy, and are welcome back at PGE anytime.

We should be really happy with the crowd of 8200
and the pep band was great.

Yes, the pep band was nice. Adding a band remains a solid goal for the program. Maybe the new prez can work on that.

38 Penalties. Wow. It seemed like 60. ;-)

Some thoughts....

It really looked like the first game of the year. Kickoff out of bounds? Deja Vu. :-\

I was really surprised that Howland didn't look so good out there. Reports from camp were pretty good, and I thought that he'd shred a DII defense if the line played well. We have depth at QB, and if one guy can't get it done one afternoon, there is another guy that can. We may have a pretty good short yardage game this year. Anyone that remembers that sequence of plays on the goal line versus NAU last year should be excited about this. Let's hope the fumbles stop.

Defense. The defense looked great. Our linebackers are so quick, to the ball. Only one real bad play was that run up the middle for 53 yards that led to the WOU score, and it looked like our starting secondary was out on the other late TD that WOU scored.

Jones is a playmaker and is going to be fun to watch this year.

I'm glad somebody brought up the issue of sacks. The offensive line looked to be much improved, and with Bobby back to block, we shouldn't be getting sacked every other play like we were last year.

Some other program will need to fight Notre Dame for the most sacks allowed in the country this season. :-)

Several Observations from the 50 yard line....

This was a good win.... However there is tons of work that still needs to be done. The rhythm of the game sucked! The Refs and the Teams totally sucked the energy out of the first 1/2. Even for a first game of the season, there were WAY to many penalties... I think "Happy Feet Howland" looked great initially, but then started losing confidence , started mving his feet around in the pocket, never getting his feet planted to throw the long ball, and made BAD decisions... He definatley has the better arm, but just got wigged out for whatever reason... Could be the freaking penalties?

Hubel did well and looked smooth. I was worried about how the team would respond to the change as Howland is the team leader. Hubel does NOT havea depp ball, but is great when he hits those 10 yard slants... A team with good linebackers will stop that and I hope that he as a few other tools.

Kicking.... We do have a freaking kicking game! Nice work finding that guy, coaching staff! It is nice that we have this option...

CRAMPS?!?!? How many players went out with cramps ona 60 degree day?!?! 80 degrees with humidty maybe.... Or 90 degrees like they will see at Davis in 2 weeks, expected. But not in 60 degree weather... 52 and 1. (there were others also) You guys have great potential and played pretty well, but you have to work through the cramps, hydrate and play through some of the pain....

McClintock looked great.... He should though in that pass heavy offense and against WOU.

The Linebackers looked great.... Shantz was an animal! Tackling was alot better this year. We really wrapped up and knocked people down, different from years past.

And one final observation! Exactly how tall is 89? He looks like he is 5'4".... Quick, great hands and seems to run the routes well, but short as hell!

You raise a great point about tackling, one I intended to mention myself. I got so tired of watching opponents bounce off our tacklers last year. Between actually tackling and not giving up so many sacks, it is hard not to get optimistic.

As I said.... Howland never found his rhythm because of the penalties....

Hubel looked good, because they finally settled down...
