Good student turnout for an exhibition game.

Some random thoughts:

Visockis wasn't suited. Too bad, I wanted to get a look at him.

Jones has great touch with the left hand and has a little more bulk than I thought. He really used the body to back his guy down a couple of times.

Oh #3 for WOU. Don't try to bully a pre-season All American point guard. Would you like to pick up your jockstrap at the Smith Center on Monday or should we just mail it to you?

Nelson is the real deal. He'll get pulled by Bone for jacking up 27' shots, so if bad shots can be eliminated, look out Big Sky.

Admit it, how long did you look for Morrison to finally realize that he's gone. :-(

There's a cool new screen on the scorers table with a video feed(s). What exactly is that?

The not so good:

Wright had an off night. I think he's capable of much more.

We didn't get back on defense for the first ten minutes of the game. Also, we let guys go right to the hoop and gave them the baseline in the first half. That seemed to end in the 2nd half. Overall, we gave up too many easy baskets.

There were a few breaks where we had numbers and got too deep to the basket to score.

Is size going to be a potential issue?

The good:

Without having stats to look at, I'm going to guess that we had 114 steals. Seriously, we had a lot.

The ball not touching the floor on a break is a thing of beauty.

Waters is a player. Tough on defense, and good with the ball.

The new uniforms look good!

Go Viks!

Portland, OR - A late first-half run by the Portland State Vikings led them to a 101-78 victory over Western Oregon in a preseason exhibition game at the Stott Center.

The Vikings, defending Big Sky Conference Champions, were making their first appearance since last year's record run to the NCAA Tournament - albeit in an exhibition - and they didn't disappoint.

PSU shot .676 from the field in the first half, and went on a 25-7 run over a five-minute stretch just before intermission. Eight different Vikings scored in the run. Portland State trailed 30-29 with 6:53 left in the half, but eventually went into the locker room with a 54-41 lead.

Western Oregon, a Division II member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, never got closer than 10 in the second half as the Vikings rolled to a 23-point win.

The Vikings finished the game shooting .583 from the field. PSU scored 36 points off 25 Western Oregon turnovers. The Vikings had 18 steals, led by five from Jeremiah Dominguez.

Six Portland State players scored in double figures, led by Phil Nelson with 19 points off the bench. Nelson, a sophomore transfer, hit 7-11 shots from the field.

Another transfer, junior Dominic Waters, got the start and scored 11 points with eight assists and two steals. He did not turn the ball over in 29 minutes of play.

Jamie Jones, also a junior transfer, scored 16 points on 8-9 shooting, had three assists, three blocks, three rebounds and two steals in just 19 minutes.

Travis Kuhns scored 26 points with eight assists for the Wolves. Mike McLaughlin added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

someone yells out "great screen, jeremiah"
then someone on the other side of the court yells "great screen, phil"
next second we see thomas with a monster dunk.

New players Phil Nelson, Dominic Waters and Jamie Jones showed their talents in Portland State's first basketball game.

A late first-half run by the Vikings led them to a 101-78 victory over Western Oregon in a preseason exhibition game at the Stott Center.

The Vikings, defending Big Sky Conference champions, were making their first appearance since last year's record run to the NCAA Tournament — albeit in an exhibition — and they didn't disappoint.

Was anyone not impressed. I see the Viks outrebounded by a DII and allowed too many points. Looks like though it was only close for the first 14 min of the game.

Did any of the new tranfers start? I read PHil came off the bench.

This was an exhibition game.

Substitutions were fast and furious to see different lineups, and the starting lineup did not start.

This PSU team will be much more of an up and down the court team. They are very quick.

Portland State 101, Western Oregon 78 Vikings get average grade against Wolves

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikingsbasketball/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/sports/1225954513143940.xml&coll=7#continue

Before Portland State coach Ken Bone can settle on a playing rotation, he wants to know who is going to share the basketball.

Bone liked what he saw in the assist department Wednesday night but was critical of almost everything else as the defending Big Sky Conference champion Vikings outlasted the Western Oregon Wolves for a 101-78 exhibition victory at the Stott Center.

Phil Nelson scored 19 points off the bench and Jamie Jones added 16 to pace six players in double figures for the Vikings.

Travis Kuhns led all scorers with 26 for the Wolves, who trailed 54-41 at halftime and could never cut the deficit below 10 in the second half despite a 31-28 advantage in rebounds.

"Overall, to give it a grade, I'd say it was about 'C' work," Bone said. "I was very disappointed that we got outrebounded. And disappointed in our lack of concentration defensively.

"Western exposed us. They moved the ball, found the open guy and scored a lot of different ways. A lot of the credit goes to them."

The Vikings return six players from last season's 23-10 team that lost to Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but they also lost seven others, so they have several new players to break in this season.

The consensus among Big Sky coaches, though, is that this PSU team might be more talented than last year's team, with reigning conference MVP Jeremiah Dominguez joining forces with three transfers from Division I schools -- Dominic Waters (Hawaii), Jones (Portland) and Nelson (Washington).

That quartet took control late in the first half Wednesday, sparking a 25-7 run that turned a 30-29 deficit with 6:44 remaining into a 54-37 advantage less than a minute before halftime.

Julius Thomas finished with 14 points, and Tyrell Mara, Dominguez and Waters had 11 points each for the Vikings, who shot 58.3 percent (42 of 72) from the field with 26 assists.
