Western State

It's getting close to the opening game of the season. I at first thought Western State would not be much competition for us, but as the time is getting closer I am not so sure. They are not a bad team. They have several really good players that could start on our team and they have nothing to lose just like CSUP when they came to our house and went away with a win. Check out some of the highlights with them and the CSUP team that won the national championship last year. I don't think they can beat us, but I don't think it will be easy. I say 24 to 13 Bears.

Western wins by at least a TD. Don't think we will be able to tackle Austin Ekeler and the only chance our team has at scoring is with running back trae riek and Jacob Knipp at QB. Whye and Miller and the rest of the wide receivers need to have a big day. Key to the game is going to be stopping Austin Ekeler and need a big day from the offense

If they lose this they need to fire this guy immediately.

I'm kind of glad I'll be out of the state this weekend watching a Power 5 school play just in case this goes horribly wrong.

I'll be checking the score while I watch a Power 5 school play as well. Sure hope both games end how I want them to.

When watching tape I always felt like line play was the most obvious leap between conference levels. It's possible that western can match up in many facets of the game, but they should not be able to match us physically. If we line up and run zone 90% of the game, we should smash them. My advice for the game would be keep it on the ground, control the tempo of the game, and UNC wins in a blowout.

Anything but a HUGE blowout is unacceptable. Even a close win over an average to below average D2 team should turn up the heat on Coach Collins seat. If they lose, he should be shown the door immediately.

Too much confidence among young fans...Western State may well be our teams longest rivalry, and they beat the Bears in the season opener in either 95 or 96 when the Bears won back to back D-2 National titles.

Those Bear teams would simply beat the hell out of the current UNC product, thanks to years of lousy leadership, indifference, and low esteem.

Look out, remember Lindenwood..

Not only Lindenwood. Do not forget the 31-0 thrashing from Chadron State. And all these new fans wonder why we are fed up !!!

We all need to put the past to bed and focus on the now. Don't focus on last season, the '96 season, or next season for that matter. Focus on the season at hand. It is truly the only one that matters at this point. We can talk about should of, could of, and would of's all day long, but it doesn't change anything. We need to vocally support this team and this program, on this board, in the community, and especially face-to-face with the players and coaches. I for one am optimistic about this season. The players are optimistic. The coaches are optimistic. After all, they are the ones who have been putting in the time and sweat. Bears win. :twocents:

The Mountaineers return 9 starters on offense and 6 on defense. Mountaineer QB Brett Arrivey is a solid playmaker with decent arm. Austin Eckeler is a tough running RB with enough speed to go the distance; he's WSU's star. The receivers have good hands but aren't the fastest in the world. The O-line is good but somewhat undersized. On defense, WSU runs a 3-4 defense. The defensive line is solid but not overpowering. Last year's 3 DLs return. Only 3 of 4 linebackers return however. The LBs and CBs were the strength of the D last year. Both corners are gone but both Safetys return.

Last year WSU lost big to Angelo State and Chadron State. They played Colorado Mines and CSU-Pueblo tough. They finished the season with 4 wins and 7 losses. WSU is projected to finish somewhere in the middle of the pack this season. UNC should win this game going away.

Saturday will be the 63rd meeting between the two schools. Western met with UNC for the first time in 1923. The Mountaineers first traveled to Greeley in 1928. Western's
record in Greeley is 6-22-2. The last time Western was in Greeley, the Mountaineers
came away with a win by forfeit despite being outscored 31-0

They already named Newsome either yesterday or a couple of days ago

"QB1
Senior QB Jonathan Newsom was named the season's starter after a month long battle between redshirt sophomore Jacob Knipp, and redshirt junior Kyle Sloter. OC Jon Boyer said that the Bears can expect to see all three QBs used in some capacity."
