I think that Richardson is the 9th, and you are right, It's about an 8.5 man rotation. Right now, the 10th guy is probably Van Pelt. Although, I think we will only see him in a blowout or extreme foul trouble. :twocents:

I'm not seeing the big knock on the bench. In the last outing they shot 66% from the field and had 6 assists. The one negative they had was turn overs. They had 5. As far as Richardson's play goes, it is hard to look good in 3 minutes of PT. You can't develop any kind of flow in that little time. :coffee:

I'm worried about our defense. Offensively the Cats are fine, for the most part. We have players who see the floor really well and make the extra pass. Yes, on the pick and roll there were a couple of times on Saturday where the guard should have made the lob pass to Bolomboy for the easy dunk, but instead tried to make a difficult shot and they missed it. That happened three times. Make the extra pass on the pick and roll. Defense is what worries me. Missed assignments were rampant on Saturday. I love Joel's offense, but hate his defense. He is fine around the basket, but gives up too much outside the paint. He needs to toughen up and play better defense. Way too many easy buckets. Most of them happened because of players playing soft and lazily on the defensive side of the court. Weber has to fix that.

I am also concerned about foul trouble, especially for Joel and James. Seems like they are playing soft in order to keep from fouling. Coaches will not put up with that and it will come with time. One thing is for sure ... the roster is a work in progress. What matters is how we play come conference games. There will most certainly be injuries before all is done, and it would be nice to get some of the younger players some time when possible so they can be ready if needed.

Bench depth has incredible potential for the Cats. But the only way to develop that potential is to give the players a chance to play. I for one was relieved by Hajek's play on Saturday. He looked far more comfortable and seemed like someone who could really give the Cats some good mins off the bench. If Braxton is indeed going to be using a RS (lets look at the positives, that gives him a year to grow, get use to the college game, and to learn the offense, he will become even more of a beast) that leaves Van Pelt as the last line of defense. From what I have seen of Van Pelt I'm not impressed. Yes, it usually takes a little longer than 10 months to get your legs fully back after your mission, so, he might need more time to get back into the swing of things, but as of right now, I worry that he is our fall back plan. So, I think it would be best, in any situation where the Cats are up by 15 with less than 5 to go that Pelt needs to be put into the game so that he can get use to playing and be ready when needed. I know that Rahe has said that Kyndahl can play the 5. Do we really want Hill being a 5? Or the 6-4 Coston? Rahe has got to get Pelt some game mins. If, indeed Braxton is RS.

Purple, seems like you are being a little too critical. From what I have seen Van Pelt has not really been given a chance yet. Word is that he has been working his butt off in off season and practice, and you are right it takes time to get your legs back. Supposedly the coaches have been bringing him along slowly to avoid injuries that are all too common with RM's who try to do to much too soon. Wasn't he good enough his freshman year that they committed him to a scholarship very early in the season and almost took him off redshirt in January because they felt like he could help?

Besides if Zach is going to redshirt there is no reason he couldn't come off redshirt if needed before the end of the season. The most important part of all this discussion is that we know the coaches have a plan FOR THE WHOLE SEASON. They know it is long, and that there will be injuries. It is not likely that the starting five now will be the starting five at the end of conference play. I do agree with you though that if Van Pelt is going to be called on he should be getting minutes now. For all practical purposes he is a freshman and has yet to play one minute in a college game.

I don't think you need to worry too much about Van Pelt. He is a down to earth young man and knows what the score is. There may be games this year when he can help. There will be many games when he will not see the floor. There are some BSC teams that he could start for, but it is nice to get all that you can out of your college experience and be involved with a winning program. He knows that he is bound to go pro in something other than basketball. I really respect the young man and want to see him play a bit. I just know that it won't be often and won't be many minutes when he does play. Ryan will be playing the role that Braxton would have, if he were to play this year. Player success can be defined in a lot of ways. My feelings are that if they are giving everything they have to the team, then they are successful, whether they play or not. :thumb: :thumb:
