What are your suggestions to fix our defense

luckyintheorder said:
Defense is vastly improved; our coaches were put in a situation they didn't know how to adapt too and suffered vapor lock. Could write a book on the fourth quarter alone, but will leave it to 4 plays were we either stunted the DL out of the middle and allowed the QB to pick up long 3rd downs running or kept our LB's in coverage against the RB and the TE. Any film study would have told their QB the LB's were weak in coverage, when he saw it, he made the throws. Knowing what YSU was going to do, I would have had 5 man DL sets with combinations that had size on the nose and quickness in the 1 or 3 gaps and allowed LB's, DE's or safeties to flow to anything to the outside; man and short zone coverages behind them depending on situation.

Looking forward to the improvement in 2017 of the overall defense with all those juniors and sophomores coming back and the coaches with another year under their belt to better utilize the personnel available. Early prediction: Eastern D lands in the top third in the FCS next season AND beats NDSU :-)
So, are you saying you are able to see these problems and the entire coaching staff can not? Where were you able to aquire this magical 20/20 hindsight?

To All,
I don't have any suggestions. I will continue to leave the Coaches to do their jobs "Coaching" This defense have come a very long way, and they got better each game, to the point where they held 38-0. We panic very easy. We lost, and we will not get that game back. This is not to be critical of anyone, we need to sit and check out what happened, and then hope the Coaches saw what we saw, and make the changes where necessary. "Happy New Year to all" Vic E. Way to focus on the wrong message as usual.

Don't know if you have coached football, but it is VERY easy to suffer vapor/gameplan lock within the game. It is frustrating and feels alot like the quicksand analogy from The Replacements. As too my take, the coaches saw what they saw and did what they thought was best. Hindsight is valuable and I expect that the staff learned something from the experience was the net net in answer to the original question "suggestions to fix our defense". The rest, for me, was venting on other ways to approach the conundrum YSU presented late in the game. There are pluses and minuses to every strategy. Where's the "don't be a twerp" emoji.

This is where my heart is for next season.

I don't disagree with anything you posted, but we hadn't shown 5 man DL sets all year, so it's tough to reinvent the wheel for one game... especially for one portion of one game. Ultimately, when it comes to the Youngstown game, we had a lot of plays where our D was in the right position but just didn't make a play on the pass or ballcarrier.

Agreed, it looked like bumper cars in the backfield quite often. Certainly enjoyed the progression of the team through out the season and nothing but upside on both sides of the ball (barring the WR's, who will still be very good) Eastern could be SCARY good and the recruiting class will push competitiveness to yet another level this off season.

luckyintheorder,
We are losing three Outstanding WR, left, look at the ones we have left, # 7 Nic Sblendorio, #14 Jayson Williams, this young man is going to be great addition, I've seen him in practices, #22 Nsimba Webster, we know what him and Sblendorio are capable of doing, #37 Kyle Olson-Urbon, (RS), Looked great in practices, #80 Zach Eagle, #81 Stu Stiles (We saw what they are both capable of doing), #82 Xavier James (RS) last year very good hands from Arizona, #Dre' Sonte Dorton, #88 Terrence Grady, they are both outstanding individuals. I am sure come February we will see more Wide Receivers on the Recruiting list. Now, this is if all Players come back. Happy New Year, and get ready for another strong year 2017 Football. Vic E. If I was coach I would have given our D a rest by running more than 18 plays in the 2nd half.

To All,
Forgot to list Dre' Sonte Dorton #, which is #87, he and all the other Receivers are going to be great, and do great things. I love the way they all plays. Keep your eyes on #7 Nic Sblendorio, #14 Jayson Williams, #37 RS Kyle Olsen- Ubon, # 82 Xavier James, these four are going to be Outstanding, we all know what Stu Stiles and Nic are capable of doing. Can't wait for Feb for Recruits, and April when practice commence. Just hoping all our Players return. Hope none of them are burned out. We have #78 RS Connor Crist, #79 RS Nicholas Blair, both OL, just to name a few that will fill in on the team. Have a "Happy New Year. Will talk about #72 Keith Moore, and some of the Defense are waiting to play. Vic E. Wallace

There does appear to be a lot of talent in the untried personnel. Big fan of Olson-Urbon's HS tape and looking forward to seeing Grady mature into a larger role. Lots of competition for playing time. We will miss the productivity of Bourne, Shaq and Kupp until these players grow into the role. Would take the Eastern depth chart on WR's over any other program in the FCS. Glad you are there to give us these insights. Happy New Year everyone!

Was thinking the same thing about our QB's. Jim Allen said he thinks Barriere will challenge the QB depth chart. If that's the case, we have three QB's that could start and be very good for most FCS teams. That's just crazy to have that depth. I remember my greatest fear was Erik Meyer getting injured because his backup was just nowhere close to him. I would hate to see Gubrud go down, but am glad to know if he did, we'd still be in very capable hands.

Vic;
We've been spoiled with the receivers we have had in the last 10+ years. As I watch the college bowl games and see so many balls dropped I realize this. Our receivers just seldom miss balls and more often make amazing catches. The guys we have red shirted, like Terrence Grady, would be starters on any other Big Sky team. These outstanding receivers have made our talented QB's look good. I look for this trend to continue.

This is true about our receivers, but also our QBs. I watched Michigan stink up the field against Florida State and thought there is no way Speight is better than Gubrud. Granted, he's more of the pro style of a big, upright QB, but Gubrud brings a lot more versatility while still making better throws. You could replace Mighigan with many other big name programs; Georgia, Florida, and Texas among others, and I still think we've got a better QB (or QBs, as the case may be).

clawman,
I noticed all those dropped Balls in Stanford, and NC Game. Isn't it funny to see how easy our WR caught those balls? Even one handed, and that is practiced everyday when they practice. Anyway Stanford won 25 - 23, if I am not mistaking. Can't wait for February to see who we get as Recruits. I know we doe not have that much Scholarships to work with, and our Coaches does an Outstanding job with the Scholarships. I am glad I am not the one trying to divide them up. Still waiting for the information on FB Banquet, we will be out of the Pence Union Building (PUB), for remodeling. It moved to Jan 21st, 2017, location unknown, ones mentioned are Northern Quest, and Red Lion downtown. Happy New Year to ALL! Vic E. Wallace
