What Happened?

I am completely stumped. I thought we would be so much better. Is it our youth only? Coach does such a great job. I don't get it.

Great job? You need to be more specific. This team has a 6-11 conference record at this time. What is great about that?

It was a great game to watch.
We were set to win when they got an unbelieveable 3 to draw with only 50 seconds left.
Then there were mistakes by both teams forcing overtime.
We lost the game in overtime.
Why did we lose? Hard to say.
All I know is that it was a very competitive game that either team could have won.
Great game. Players played hard.
Inexperience - maybe - but definitely not a lack of effort.
Looking forward to Saturdays game :)

Agree with Clawman...we have lost twice as many games as we have won in a Big Sky Conference that is the worst it has ever been. What's so great???

From what I have seen from the stands, there is rarely a lack of effort. Our players work hard and appear to have fun playing together. My question is and has been, does the coaching staff make our players the best they can be?

One thing to remember about this team is that it is young, has battled injuries to key players and early in the season lost their starting point guard who could score. Many issues for a team to overcome.

One thing I have noticed is the lack of getting the ball inside to Seiferth. It seems most of his points come from offense rebounds and not directly from getting the ball from the guards. This is problematic because many of the potential rebounds are long because of the many 3 point attempts. Need to find ways to feed the ball inside. He is not getting into the flow offensively.

This is my 2cents:
1. No emphasis on defense by the coaching staff (don't believe me look at shooting %)
2. Offense focused more on getting a 3 point shot
3. No inside post game at all..Not emphasized see #2
4. Poor free-throw shooting
5. Lack of half-time adjustments or in-game adjustments by the coaching staff
6. Use the excuse of being young to cover up 1 thru 5 (we are 29 games into the season)
7. I could go on and on but I am too frustrated that we are at the bottom of a very bad conference so I'll stop at 7

concur...that was tuff to watch. There's something about this team that gives me hope...just can't put my finger on it!

I have resigned myself to the fact that this season is lost. Yes, I have been the eternal optimist but after today's game, all is lost. Actually all was lost after the PSU game.
Lets look foward to next year. All of Earlywine players are gone. The ENTIRE team is Hayfords. And he has had an entire season to work with the "young" players.
Next year if we do not see at least a winning conference record who's to answer for that?
The following year, if we do not contend for conference championship the following season, who's to answer for that?

Last two games were winable
Really tough to see both games slip away.
Many valid points above.
Hopefully the team gets wins for the last two but tough with so many injured players.
Unlucky or ?
I have no solutions.

I agree with "clawman" and the points that "eagle1" listed. Not an excuse for the season, but I think that youth is a part of the inconsistency issues. But I think this team will win Big Sky Championship(s). Look at what we have:
1) Tyler Harvey, wow, he has shown that he can handle point and score (A BUNCH!)
2) Martin Seiferth, athletic big man, need to design (modify) an offense that gets him the ball.
3) Venky Jois, super-athletic forward that will be at least a double/double the next three years.
4) Parker Kelley, high energy, 3-point threat and a leader.
5) Thomas Reuter, another athletic forward, diamond in the rough, with offensive and defensive capabilities.
6) Daniel Hill, true point guard that will relieve Tyler Harvey of the point responsibilities, so Harvey can create and score (a CRAP LOAD of points).
7) Frederik Jörg, GIANT person who's game will improve significantly, and will have a cast of teammates that will get him the ball.
8) Red shirts just waiting for their chance.
9) Coach Hayford (and assistants) who given the chance will prove that he IS the coach for EWU.

I'M BUYING SEASON TICKETS FOR NEXT YEAR!!

I defenitely see some positives with the players and think Jois, Harvey, and Seiferth can be all-conference type players. Tyler Harvey should have been playing from the start!

The excuse that we are a young team is a crappy excuse. We are at the end of the season now, freshman aren't freshman anymore. If we want to talk about youth, look at the top 4 teams in our conference this year, and who they started on Saturday.

Montana - 0 Seniors (although Cherry is a senior who normally starts for them)
Weber - 2 Seniors
UND - 1 Senior
Northern Colorado - 0 Seniors

Looks like everyone is just as young as we are, and they are beating us. I also want to point out that we have only beaten 1 team with a winning record this year and that is Sam Houston who is only 1 game above .500. I have been optimistic at times, but its hard when every other team in the Big Sky is young this year, we have ZERO quality wins, and we are getting dominated in one of the worst Big Sky all around seasons that I can remember. We only played 1 BCS conference school this year (the cellar dwelling Cougs) and we still only have 9 wins. Nobody is young this late in the year, when you lose back to back games at home at he end of the season, youth is not an excuse.

I don't have the answer, I like coach Hayford, but unlike some of you, I am not too optimistic about the future at this point. I sure hope I am wrong and I will gladly eat crow if I have too....

Your Coach, Hayford is his name, he sucks. If he was selling mouse sh*t as a cure for bad breath, I think
Some of you guys would be buyers. :dunce:

I cannot believe this racist crap :(
This is not funny, this is RACIST and shouldn't be tolerated!
Go eags :|
Racist? Everyone is Caucasian. There are a number of other terms that better describe my comment, racist is certainly not one of them.
As far as the comment itself, I am VERY sorry if it offended you. My thought was one of a light hearted jab at Hayford but certainly not at any of our players. I think all of the foreign players are great and have made significant contributions to the team and I hope the school. I hope they feel as rewarded.

Holy cow AussieFan. Lighten up. My retort to the troll was not directed to our international students. It was meant to be funny and not disrespectful to any of our basketball team.
