What If?

We win out.
Davis beats Eastern on Nov. 10 (not unlikely)
Weber St beats Idaho St on Nov. 17.

Then...
We are in sole possession of third place in the Big Sky.
And probably on the way to the playoffs.

If we can't get the autobid, I doubt we will be going, which means we need a major collapse from Davis. We win out and we only have 6 DI wins. We would have a helluva argument (6 game winning streak, beating ISU, North Dakota and EWU to end the year), but the committee tends to look for any teams with 7 DI wins before eying those with 6.

As they say, "let's take it one game at a time." We play ISU in the middle of the night some between Portland and "The Coast" in a probable rain storm. If anyone can find their way to the game and back, then we can begin looking to the N Dakota game.

And its hard to throw a football
in the cold November rain.

So do you think they would take a 5-3 Big Sky team who had 7 DI wins over us?
Or would they take only 2 from the 13 team Big Sky?

i do. In your scenario, I see only Davis and Weber getting in. Maybe EWU depending on how the rest of the country plays out. They would probably load it up with teams from the Mo Valley, and someone ridiculous (like Furman).

I think the 7 win criterion is silly. It takes no account of the nature of the 3 nonconference opponents. Some of us, PSU and 1 or two others, play two FBS. Some Big Sky teams play none.

The 7 DU wins is actually a rule of thumb, and not a stated rule. However, it has been a good barometer for teams to shoot for over the years. EWU is actually in the same boat as we are. They need to win this week against Northern Colorado and then win one more game (UC Davis or us) to get to 7 Di wins.

Should we win out, we run the risk of knocking ISU, EWU and North Dakota all out of the playoff picture. We would then have 6 DI wins, but no impressive wins. Its fun to play spoiler. Every one in the conference wants us to lose, but everyone else around the country is cheering for us.

If we beat all three, I'd hardly call us a spoiler!
I'd call us exactly where we would be numerically: The Third Best Team in the BSC.
I'd say sole possession (it makes a difference) of third place in a 13 team league should get you in.
To me, a two FBS nonconf schedule makes the 7-win guideline vacuous.
