What IS Discipline ?

Hopefully, your negative contribution to this site will go with him. ;)
Good luck Zach. Wishing you a healthy and successful career.

I'm sorry should we all be joyful paying good money and watching another losing season. I'm a supporter of Portland State but should we all sit quietly and watch things continue to fall apart.

I sat this weekend and watched the Weber State game. They were playing Montana State. Weber's head coach is Jody sears, ex-Washington State defensive backs coach. he doesn't have anywhere near the talent Portland State has but they gave Montana State a good solid game. They limited their penalties and turnovers and fought every second of the game. The kids from weber State were playing above their skill levels and exceeding expectations.

I wonder why it's constantly acceptable to play below expectations and not to our potential let alone exceed it. I wonder why if anyone dare say anything about it they are the enemy. I'm not the enemy by any stretch of the imagination but if no-one is willing to start these conversations then how do the expectations of our team change and how does change occur.

It's no longer acceptable to say they are young or not experienced and it's no longer okay to watch 2 or 3 interceptions like that is normal. it's not okay to get 3 or 4 personal fouls anymore during a game. If we just started with discipline and turnovers things would begin to change.

I watched the Sunday night football game and #99 on Denver cost them a chance at a last minute comeback with a dumb personal foul on Andrew Luck and he was immediately pulled from the game and I'm sure today he is worried about whether or not his coaches feel they can trust him. That is how we stop personal fouls and we stop the silly turnovers by removing players like the Colts did when Trent Richardson fumbled the ball.

There has to be a price to pay for making unforced errors and silly mistakes and it's not taking it out on the other guys on the team. It's taking it out by limiting playing time to the guys making the mistakes.

I'm sorry if the truth is offensive or negative but something has to change or this will continue this season and for seasons to come and I really don't want to drive down to Eugene to watch a Saturday football game.

If you'll check the depth chart, Whalen probably left to get some playing time somewhere. And, gvg's version of the "truth" is highly subjective. Losing isn't fun and brings out the ugly. Too bad. Go watch a practice, these still appear to be a bunch of kids who are having fun.

Oops...sorry, just realized that Whalen had season ending injury during fall camp. That being the case, there could be all sorts of reasons for his leaving.

Whalen left and he will be playing at another big sky school next year. He left to go play football somewhere else period. We need to be realistic about what is happening to our team. Burying your head in the sand adds no value. Being a rah rah supporter is useless. I've been doing it for years.

Whalen would have gotten plenty of PT here. I think the reason GVG posted is accurate and should be a concern. From what I understand he was unhappy about how his injury was dealt with. I can see why he would be unhappy about that.

GVG, you are not the enemy by any means. I just don't understand what you're trying to achieve here at this time. We are mid-season and not playing well. We have the best (easiest) part of our schedule coming up and hopefully will pick up 3 or 4 wins here. After that, depending on what happens we can cast blame wherever it deserves to fall. Right now I just don't see the purpose in it.

I'm assuming that it'll be Eastern since I think they were on his short list.

He'll need to sit next year with the FCS to FCS transfer, right?

From what I understand Whalen decided to leave because of discipline he received regarding inappropriate use of social media. :ohno:

GVG... I offer the opinion that chastising fans of a program that's already under fire creates the opposite effect of what you seek. The wagons are circled. There's a good number of people here who think taking an action probably kills the program altogether... at least that's my guess.

Which means I have to throw out the tired old "it is what it is" phrase. How does a group of people demand improvements to an athletic department that's not sure you exist, not sure they'll exist for long, and doesn't have the money to fire the coach with even a year left on the contract?

June Jones is probably going to be on the hotseat at SMU soon. What if we made him head coach, Neil Lomax OC, retain Jaime Hill as DC and place Nigel Burton in charge of Recruiting and Special Teams?

That way, NB gets to stay and recruit and learn under a more seasoned head coach to fill in the missing ingredients. I feel like SC, as if we have a lot of assistant coaches and no true head coach. June Jones can fill that role nicely.

So if that's true, here's my take on that.

If the football program, or the Athletic Department for that matter, has a clear, black and white policy on the use of social media for their student athletes, I say it seems like a pretty lame reason to leave a program. Could have been the straw that broke the camel's back, but violating a policy, then being upset by the repercussions doesn't seem very mature.

If the football program, or the Athletic Department for that matter, does not have a clear, black and white policy on the use of social media for their student athletes, and he's disciplined for something he did, then I can see him getting upset.

Again, this could have just been the final straw.

Zach Whalen did not leave the football program because of discipline from using social media. He left for many reasons and none of them were playing time he felt he'd get or using social media. Just found out two more big names from 2012 almost left today. They've had it with the way the coaches speak to them and the crap they have to deal with on a daily basis. Sadly none of it is football related. It all seems to be personal and intolerable.

Why do you think Zach Whalen was granted a full release? Daniel Halverson was NOT granted a full release and had to go to a JC. Zach was granted a full release because he is bright and well spoken and they didn't want him speaking to the media or sharing his reasons for leaving the team.

I'm telling you it's making me sad to see it happening but it's happening and getting worse now.

You seem to be very close to the team GVG, how do you know two more almost left? Were you at practice?

I do think NB has lost control and influence on the team, and I have heard some of the same rumors you have heard regarding the kids and how they view some of the coaches. I honestly half expected Nigel to get fired over the week off. I thought the fight with Hill at SUU and the egg we laid there would be the final straw.

A couple of the seniors are what keep these kids there at this point. Loyalty and a hope for change keeps them coming back. You'd think as a coach you'd realize your way of dealing with your players isn't working and you'd make adjustments to help your team win. You can't preach it's all about the team and not be willing to change how you deal with people when it's clearly not working and you are clearly getting no buy in from players.

These kids put their bodies and health on the line everyday for these men and in return get talked to like they are idiots. The coaches on this team seem to believe it's their way or the highway in how they speak and treat these kids. This isn't about playing time, some of these kids start and play almost every down and some play sparingly but they all have the same outlook. Football is the worst part of their day instead of the best thing in their life.

They all worked their tails off to get here so why all of the sudden can't they stand playing a game they once loved. You can try and blame the players or do the standard " they want more playing time" or "they can't learn the system" or "anything else you want to say but the truth is they can't deal with how the coaches treat them as young men giving it all they have for coaches that don't seem to appreciate their efforts.

I wish it weren't so but it is what it is and it doesn't seem to be changing but getting worse with each loss. Men handle stress and conflict in many ways but taking it out on the people most loyal to you isn't appropriate at any level of life.

GVG's tag is supplier of high quality H20...He's a supplier of high quality something, not sure it's water, though. Agree that this nattering nabob of negativism should sit on it and see where the season goes from here. His (assuming it's a he) comments aren't helpful at this point. Frustrated? Sure, we're all frustrated. The team and coaches are probably frustrated the most. And, frustration creates emotional responses.

Really not caring much anymore. Accept for a 7 and 3 season there hasn't been much to watch. Thinking I'm going to head up to Eugene to watch some football from this point on. I tried to stir up some real conversations on how we can get the most out of what should be an exciting team but obviously PSU is stuck in the "we'll get them next year mode". If you don't fight for change then change never happens.

In business and in life you can either make things happen or let them happen to you. I'm giving up on this season and all to come. Good luck guys! I'm moving on to something I can actually enjoy.
