What schools would you like to see join the BSC?

Doug Fullerton did a radio interview in Boise the other day and mentioned that other schools have been inquiring about joing the BSC. I know the BSC is actively chasing Idaho, but it looks like NMSU may be inthe mix as well.

Made me think...who woulf I like to see in the conference....

My first choice would to see U of San Diego join...then maybe Humbolt transition up to D1. Big wish list would be to see some of the other CA schools bring the teams back at the D1-AA level...ie: UOP, Long Beach and Chico. :twocents:

Unfortunately the teams you mentioned will never have football again due to budgets and financing. I'd like to add Idaho and New Mexico. Fullerton would like them but I don't think they will drop to FCS.

Humboldt St for sure. However, during our bball tournament game (CSULA vs HSU), I asked jack fans if a desired to upgrade football existed in their fan base. They said a very tiny one. The support for football just isn't there up there, is what they said to me.

Chapman University in Orange County, but they recently joined SCIAC DIII, the Ivy League of the west, if you will.

Azusa Pacific University in Northeast L.A. county will eventually be a candidate for FCS, I think. They'll be playing their first official year of DII athletics this season.

University of San Diego would be another school I'd like to see in the BSC.

Linfield College in Oregon is suppose to be a DIII power program from my understanding. I'd like to see them move up.

UOP/LBSU/Fullerton are NOT going to happen under current administrations.

For the time being, the Sky is probably DONE expanding, and that's probably a good thing. Many fans are still not happy about the presence of UND/UNC/SUU, and yes, some still complain about Sac. Unless someone jumps to FBS (doubtful for the time being since the WAC is pretty much dead), we're pretty much done. Nobody wants D-II call-ups. Even then, few make geographic sense, and those that do don't have the facilities to pull it off.

I don’t think Idaho or NM State will move their football to FCS so I don’t think there are any viable candidates for football. A D-2 move-up would be pointless. Plus FCS conferences can’t have a conference championship so a football addition wouldn’t add much.

I’d like to see any school that could serve as a travel partner for us added. If Idaho joins as an Oly sports member, that would probably make PSU our travel partner. If they don’t join, I wouldn’t mind seeing Bako added for Oly sports. Their addition would split the conference like so:

West
  • • Sac
    • Bako
    • PSU
    • EWU
    • NAU
    • SUU
East
  • • UM
    • MSU
    • WSU
    • ISU
    • UNC
    • UND
We need someone who can lighten our travel load (as well as the conference as a whole) plus Bako would give the conference more access to CA recruits. Bako also would put the BSC at 5 baseball playing members. Add 1 associate member for baseball (say UVU for example) and the BSC could then sponsor baseball and receive an auto-bid to NCAA Regional’s for doing so.

Bako was just put on academic probation b/c of low APR scores. No Bako. UCSD might be the better alternative for an oly sports only team in the BSC. They have a desire to move up to DI athletics. They conducted a feasibility study, which said yes to the move. They knocked on the Big West's door, but had it shut on them like they were Mormon missionaries or Jehovah witnesses. It was right after BW invited Hawai'i.

I didn’t know that. Which reminds me, weren’t the APR scores released yesterday? Either way adding Bako would save us, and everyone in the BSC some travel cash.

The UCSD students voted down going D-1 last year. They saw the price tag and said no thanks. Regardless, they have their eyes on the Big West and the Big West only. They are not an option for the BSC.

From what I know, the vote was non-binding. That's why the AD went ahead, with approval of the admin, an inquired about a membership in the BW. That's when they were shown no interest.

I would love to see UCSD join as a Oly sports team...heck bring back FB too... :D
I actually see Idaho coming back to the FCS level, because unless some conference throws them a bone they won't make it in the FBS. Right now the only option is the MWC, Sun Belt or MAC and I don't see that happening. Being an independet would not be feasible to a program like Idaho. (Could you imagine..they would have to travel 6 or 7 times a year to be some teams annual whipping boy, then schedule 5 home games against FCS, DII or teams in worse shape then they are.)

Here are the BSC scores...looks like SacSt is moving up some...good as it will allow us some freedom to sign other recruits.

Cal Poly 971
North Dakota 969
UC Davis 960
Sac St 959
NAU 949
EWU 945
Southern Utah 944
Weber St 943
UNC 943
MSU 943
Montana 929
PSU 920
ISU 881

Not sure where your APR numbers come from, but this is what was reported in the Oregonian. As far as the football score is concerned we are just now coming out of the dark cloud of the Jerry Glanville era. By the way I'm a virgin poster on this forum and am not familiar with a few of the abvs used such as Oly and Bako - could someone enlighten me? Thanks

From PSU:

Nine of Portland State athletics' 15 programs have received perfect
Academic Progress Rates (APR) with the release of scores today by the NCAA
for the nation's Division I schools.

All 15 programs exceeded the new NCAA APR team score standard of 930 for
2010-11 - the most recent year measured. None of the programs are under any
NCAA restrictions given with sub-standard APR scores. The team average
score was 989 (out of a possible 1,000). The football team's score was 940 for 2010-11.

In 2010-11, PSU's teams receiving perfect scores of 1,000 included men's
basketball, men's cross country, men's tennis, men's indoor track, men's
outdoor track, women's cross country, softball, women's tennis and
volleyball. Men's basketball, men's tennis and men's cross country achieved
the perfect 1,000 score for the second year in a row.

The NCAA's report also revealed PSU programs with the highest multi-year
APR rates (2007-11): women's golf (990), men's tennis (986), volleyball
(983) and women's basketball (973).

Oly refers to Olympic sports. Basically everything other than football.
Bako refers to CSU Bakersfield. They are a homeless D-1 program that does not sponsor football and wants desperately to get into the Big West. The Big West has constantly rejected them but rumors are they could land a WAC invite due to that conference’s utter desperation to stay alive. Bako’s men hoop’s just got banned from post season play because of low APR scores.

What schools would I like to see in the BSC? SJSU, Fresno, Nevada... ect.

Okay, seriously though, if schools have infact contacted Fullerton, I would suspect it would have been Denver and Seattle creating a contingency plan for when the WAC implodes. It appears the summit hasn't been contacted for their impending placement. I also would suspect Utah Valley and Bakersfield have to be trying to get in the door. Independance can't be easy for the runners and the wolverines are simply waiting for their continental band of misfits to quickly whither away.

I think it would be cool if Humboldt State considered the move up. Not sure I see it happening though. The market is too isolated and they are in the Junior Cali Bus League. Azusa maybe. Big market and a private school who wouldn't have to jump the hoops a public school would to go DI. Whether they have the desire or ability to do it is something I don't know. I was also thinking Dixie State could be a possibility. They have the facilities and might be motivated with 2 other Utah schools in the conference.
