At this point, it still seems that there is an out of conference slot that still needs to be filled on the football schedule for 2017. You get to be the AD and choose a team from the poll to play. Sorry, St Francis, Mississippi Valley State, Houston Baptist, and every other FCS team below 25 in the Sagarin is unavailable. Understanding we already travel to Texas Tech, and play NDSU at home, we can have a lower division team at home, play an FBS team away, or play the away portion of a home and home against a top level FCS opponent.

I already know the preferred arrangement is to play a creampuff FCS at home if at all possible by many, if not most fans on the board. But if that's not an option, whats the next best option and why?

Elite FCS teams...no brainer for me.

I should caveat that by saying that we will always have to play a $ game for 500k or more, so this is really my opinion on who we should play for 2nd or 3rd non-conference games.

During a 12 game season, I'd say play a second FBS team for the $$$.

A combination of the above, minus the DII. The ideal schedule would include a non conference Big Sky Team, a P5, and an elite FCS team from the MVFC, etc.

Considering the two out of conference games we have on the schedule next year are Texas Tech and North Dakota State, I will take a Big Sky team or a D2 (preferably Big Sky) We have a tough schedule next year, regardless of who the third out of conference game will be.

I'd rather we not play any Division II teams, but with the strength of schedule we have most years it might not hurt our SoS that much. Still would rather play games that actually count towards playoff eligibility though.

Interesting that in 2009 2010 2013 and 2014 we played a Division II opponent, we made the playoffs every one of those years, but in 2011 and 2015 we didn't Play Division II team, and we didn't make the playoffs… The only outlier year is 2012, and probably this year

There are 124 FCS teams. That means there are 99 non-ranked FCS teams available. I can't even begin to imagine a scenario where all 99 are busy on the same weekend. I'm not sure your premise makes much sense.

After that, I'd say just make sure to get a home game. If that means, D2, then so be it. But I'd have to say it would be literally impossible to imagine a scenario where 99 teams are unavailable.

It seems we have a real challenge getting a home/home with lower level teams for some reason. They were probably available many times over the last twenty years, yet these home & homes with FCS teams have occurred with either teams within the BSC (or teams that are now part of the BSC), or elite level FCS teams. I would not want to have that game be against a lower level FCS in which we travel there, and there is no return to Cheney, such as has happened with Nicholls about eleven years ago, and USD six years ago. At least with SHSU, NDSU, and UNI, they make the trip to Cheney as part of the agreement.

I'm wondering what we will see for our open OOC slot next season. My guess is it will be a H/H with another MVFC team or a BSC team.

My own opinion is, I don't want the bruiser of second FBS in the same season, unless it is a midlevel G5 in which we get paid and have a high likelihood of adding an FBS feather to our cap. I get Marc's point about the lower division OOC games and their correspondence to our playoff appearances. I don't know that a DII last year would've helped us, but maybe, if we built confidence and avoided certain injuries. I just hate non-counters. If we win a game, I want it to be a factor in the playoff discussion.

I will say that our tough OOC games against elite teams have been exciting for me as a fan, and have been a central discussion point for FCS fans on a national scene (however small that fanbase may be). It's great to see how these games drive up widespread interest in EWU football.

Anyways, to your point, this is all hypothetical discussion as we await the completion of next years schedule.

I honestly DGAF. I truly believe we can win any game we are a part of and expect us to be competitive in any given game. You all so mercilessly mocked my 11-0 pick at the beginning of the season, but the Eags are an OT interception away from being on that path. I really don't think people fully grasp the amount and quality of talent that EWU and top FCS programs can bring in. Our starters are just as good as nearly any other FBS team's starters.

Mercilessly mocked? Someone has a bit of a victim complex. The worst anyone called you was an "outlier"

Redeemed

I would love to see a home/home with either South Dakota or South Dakota State. Either way the best option appears to be a MVC school.

Without knowing our schedule is there a lower level BSC team we could schedule a OOC H/H with?
FormerEag..I like your optimistic view and give you credit for calling it. You did mention we were one OT int. from being undefeated so far..that's a glass half full. The glass half empty could say we were two int.s' from starting the season 0-3.

Good idea. This time let's make them repay us with a visit to Cheney, unlike 2011.

That's an interesting way of looking at it...what specific teams. My dream teams all were SHSU, NDSU, and UNI. Outside of them, I'd have to ponder who else I'd love to see on the Red. A home & home with the crazy turf teams, us and UCA...though honestly, I hate all colored turf except for ours. I wouldn't mind seeing Villanova come to Cheney again, or Illinois St, though they've really dropped off this season. UNH would be a good one too. Of course, they are so far away, it's hard to imagine it happening.
